How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsThere is such a variety of sci-fi sub-genres I'm sure any reader will find plenty to enjoy
Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2021
This anthology is made up of short stories written by members of the Science Fiction Novelists Facebook group. Disclaimer: although I don’t have an entry in this anthology, I am a member of this group. But that shouldn’t disqualify me from reviewing a book I thoroughly enjoyed. Science fiction is my favorite genre to read. I’m sure you would assume that since I just stated that I belong to a group of science fiction novelists. This anthology is a varied collection of all kinds of sub-genres. So you get a good mix in this collection. The stories that stood out for me was the wry humor of ‘Fine Print’, by Claudia Blood; the inventiveness of ‘Bounce’, by Marc Neufer; the justified surprise endings of ‘Formation’ and ‘Mate For Life’, both by David Viner; and the virtual realities of ‘The Unreality Onion’, also by David Viner; the richly-drawn alien world in ‘How the Forest-Watcher Undertook to Devise a Game’ and ‘Tumet’s Trap’, both by Jon Anthony Perrotti; the hard-hitting action of ‘Once a Commando’, by Frank Booker; the inept robots of ‘Upgrade This’, by Kayelle Allen, and ‘Millington’s Last Game’, by JJ Toner; and by JJ Porter is an exciting cat and mouse battle between an alien and a human. This list of favorites is purely subjective, other readers I am sure will choose their own favorites, but as the list is over half the stories this shows how much I enjoyed this collection. I’m sure any reader will find plenty to enjoy, also.

2.0 out of 5 starsMostly not good
Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021
If this represents the contemporary short SF and F writings, then this whole literary genre is in deep trouble. Most of the contributions are either not good enough or outright bad.As a service to readers who share my own idiosyncrasies, a short list of not bad or better. "Bounce" by Marc Neuffer - Quite good except the punchline. Still, one gets the feeling that one has read many similar short stories; "Two Moon Tavern" also by Neuffer - Well written but way too long and way too much like scores of similar tales told in a similar manner; "Mate for Life" by David Viner - Not bad but again a taste of familiar stories from the past; "Upgrade This" by Kayelle Allen - Cute, though could have been a bit more insightful; "Millington's Last
Game" by JJ Toner - Well written run-of-the-mill human vs artificial intelligence. The best were the Hal dialog in "2001" and "The Hammer", one of Lem's best stories; "Miranda" by Philip Cahill - This was the first that really got my attention. Not stellar, but really good; "Nates Place" by Mike Clark - In photo-finish competition with "Miranda" in this collection. Again, looses on the punchline, but the rest pretty good. Conclusion - not enticing but one can get perhaps a couple of hours of reasonably nice read.

Absolutely terrible. I could not read more than a few pages of any story in this book. I fail to see anything of science fiction in these stories. I have been reading sci fi for 40 years.

Good collection of solid stories, easily readable and worth reading. Good collection to distract from day to day worries and to relax a bit.

It takes a lot for me to give a 5 star rating. This was a solid 4. It was a good selection of short stories. Too many times i start reading an anthology and there are several novelas packed in. I like a short story to read before bed. This did not dissapoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Assemblage of New Authors

Many of the stories are woefully short—a very good thing indeed. Left the reader wanting more. In fact it led me to purchase a few of the larger works that I look forward to diving into later. One in particular is Marc Neuffer. For a new writer , his storytelling has a delightful new tone. Hoping we’ll see a “2022 SciFi Anthology “ soon.Kudos to you all and especially the anthologists.

Some stories grab you. Some shake you.
They all seem to move you. It's why we read Si-Fi. Very moving stories.

Some good, some mediocre, some bad stories. But when buying anthologies, one never knows, does one? Just four more words Amazon lords command....lol

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing , not Science Fiction
Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2021
I was expecting Sci Fi. This is Something, but it isn’t Sci Fi.
I have only read the first four stories and don’t know if I even want to sample the rest.

I THINK THAT SCIENCE- FICTION LITTERATURE IS SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT TODAY......... BUT REAL SCIENCE-FICTION AND NOT FANTASY OR MYTHOLOGY........YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN ..............
SORRY, MAYBE (OR CERTAIN) I AM LITTLE PARANOID BUT I THINK THAT THERE IS A LITTLE "CENSURE" ABOUT SCIENCE-FICTION LITTERATURE. I DO NOT LIKE THE TODAY WORLD AND I DO NOT LIKE OUR TIME ......THIS IS ANOTHER REASON I LOVE SCIENCE.FICTION BUT REAL SCIENCE- FICTION.
