Girl meets boy, meets another boy, a classic triangle right? Only the girl is not entirely human and the same can be said of both boys. Then there's this thing that another group of not boys wants that not boy #1 has. Can it get anymore confusing? Yes it can and it does! But what about the not girl? What happens between her and the not boys is very engaging...and then there are these unsolved missing persons and mysterious deaths. Amazing story, Sarah does it again!

I was surprise by this book. I enjoyed the story line, as it was a lot more gritty, and less fantastical than one usually gets with urban fantasy/paranormal books.

The characters were great, Kyrie is strong and doesn't take crap from anyone, Tom is a clueless sweetheart, Keith is a shape shifter fanboy that totally embodies every paranormal fan out there, that he just makes you want to smile. Then there's Rafiel, cop, ladies man, lion... The make-up of all the characters, backgrounds and interactions felt real, like its something you could actually come across in your own everyday life.

That there were 2 plots, 2 bad guy groups left the story tangled up a bit. Like there should have been 2 books instead of 1. The author was also very into describing every thought our characters had, but sometimes got off track from what was happening. I found myself skimming pages over, to find where the story picked up again.

All in all, I thought it was a good story. If the wordy self dialogue had been cut down, and the plots not been twisted, I would have liked it a lot more.

I've read a number of Sarah Hoyt's Science Fiction novels and enjoyed all of them. This fantasy novel was very different. The character development was outstanding. The issues of character interaction was some of the best I've read. I was so drawn into the story that sometimes I had to stop reading so that I could reconnect with the "real" world. I had to think about the difficulties the characters were facing and put myself in their situation and question what I might have done before going back to their "reality". Thank you Sarah Hoyt for one of the best if not the best fantasy novel I've ever read.

A satisfying contemporary urban fantasy with new adult age (18-25) people as the main characters. The heroine can shape-shift into a panther, the hero into a dragon, and a secondary love interest into a lion. Unlike most stories where the characters are big fighter types, the hero and heroine work in a diner as a waiter and waitress and don't feel it is a dead end until greatness happens. They like working at the diner at night, feeding people in the little community of night owls. These two really are ordinary people who just happen to have discovered they were shapeshifters in their teens.

Then a murder happens in the back of the diner. Oh, and the dragon syndicate shows up because the hero may, or may not, have stolen something from them back when he was a stupid teenager before he got his act together kicking drugs and getting a real job.

Lots of themes related to self-agency; people's ability to control their own lives and take responsibilities for their actions. The hero and heroine both go through this, as does a couple other characters. The morality was obvious and often - and dragged down the enjoyment of the book. I don't mind a little morality - Aesop fairy tales rock, for example. But no need to have three different characters go through the epiphany of taking responsibility for their actions in one book. Yes, it is a common theme of people moving from the non-agency of teenage when parents and the government still control where you live, where you work and where you school into the self-agency of a first apartment, first job, and trying to pay bills. But this book goes over an above.

Overall a good story. Could have used a little content editing to trim the story tighter. Had the story been sharper paced, the morality would have been less annoying and more, well- yes I agree with how the concept of taking responsibility. About 50 pages too long.

Note: Three different characters, at least, have Point of View (POV) at different times during the book. I didn't have a problem following the change of POV.

Favorite character - Keith - who discovered tire irons and dragons in small spaces are equalizers for a pure human. Might continue reading the series just to see what happens to him.

Picked up while free on Kindle. 3.5 stars - rounded up for Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars The action never let up

The moment you start reading you will be thrown in to an engaging story with nonstop action. Entering the world of shifters, I wanted questions after the first two chapters, but the plot kept coming. The author crafted the answers throughout the book in a satisfying manner. Out of all the books I managed to get free, this was my favorite. Excellent story, engaging character, and no spelling errors. I am seriously considering buying the next in the series.
Now for the flaws of the book. First, the pov shifts. They happen so swiftly that in one scene you might have ten shifts back and forth between our two main characters, Kyrie and Tom. That annoyed me. Do we really need to know what the other is thinking of the situation every minute? I guess it prevents sliding view point, but in the beginning of the book it keep me from centering on a character and liking them. The second flaw was the ending. ********spoilers******** When you get there you will understand, although I am happy and delighted that Tom lived, I find it hard to believe the Luck Dragon would do that. Being as old as he was, not killing Tom permanently was no mistake. So after permanently killing your minions only because they couldn't find the Pearl, you neglect the same of the Thief? No way, not even Tom's honorable sacrifice merits that. So that broke my suspended belief, even if I was happy.**********end spoiler********
Again, a great book leaving me interested in the sequels. Great subplots, if a cheesy love triangle. I would recommend to fantasy readers, dragon enthusiasts, and teens. If interested in a more adult fare of thrillers about shape-shifters, try the Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs or Kitty Norville Series by Carrie Vaughn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique book by a brilliant author!

I read what I consider a fair amount of both non-fiction and fiction, and have a personal library of books that number in the thousands. Sometimes, when I read through a particular field, I get to see trends and memes and ideas that become more common, and appear again and again, and when that happens, it’s up to the skill of the writer to make the story worthwhile. Sara Hoyt is a very skilled and thoughtful writer, and she doesn’t disappoint in this series. While this might be considered more of a YA series, it is quite readable and enjoyable for most all ages.

A prolific and energetic author, Sara Hoyt continues to explore the boundaries of what make us Human -- our choices, our efforts, and our responsibilities-- she once again brings in a new viewpoint of what might have been "a tired old genre". We've all read endless books of magic, werewolves, and of the clash between the "real" and the "other" worlds, but Sarah Hoyt opens up her universe by taking a broader look at the dark, powerful, dangerous world of the "shifter", a human that changes into the 'other'. That 'other' might be a lion, a tiger, a bear, or a dragon, but the real insights come in when we see how each character tries to come to grips with their live(s), and the dangerous duality they must deal with, and somehow survive.

Against this rich background, Sarah Hoyt weaves in delectable strands of Mystery, Romance, and sometimes pointed observations about the world and society, making this a story – and a series – that you simply must read.

This book, the first of three books in this series, is currently available as a free download, but would be well worth full price.

Highly recommended (and the follow-on books in the series are a treat)!

I think the best books are those which take ordinary people and put them in extraordinary places.
If this was the ONLY review published, I'd go into more detail, but frankly, after two doctors' appointment,s yesterday, doing homework, making dinner, followed by a surprise PTA meeting with my third grader performing, I'M BEHIND ON MY READING!
So let me just reflect on one of the end scenes. The darkest hour. Hope is lost. And the two heroes have had their guts kicked out, one figuratively, one literally. Kyrie sits at the table, and wails the 'If Only' song to herself.
It's just so beautifully done; it's real, and evokes the moments I've been there. I'm thinking of reading this part to my son tonight, or at least this weekend. Perhaps if I can speak to his emotions as well as this scene speaks to mine, maybe he will have the foresight to avoid some of the If Only moments in his life.
NOTE: This in NO WAY implies the entire book is a downer. It's not! But I don't feel the need to pound out the outline with 65 reviews ahead of me!

This was a very good book! I noticed that the current link has it as only available used...I can only hope I didn't pay as much for my copy ($45 or more for a new quality one). It is a Baen imprint, so it is available as an e-book download--I guess Baen is keeping their back list in house for the e-book market.

I bought my paper copy at the end of 2009, and it finally made it to the top of my TBR pile, and I'm very glad! It's definitely a cut above the normal fare...I would maybe have given a 4.5, but was happy to err on the side of a 5 star review. There was nothing 'Mary Sue' about the characters--and even though one of the minor characters seems to think that being a shifter is akin to being a comic book hero, the very real problems of trying to cope is very refreshing compared to how many other UF series portray. It can't be easy to have uncontrolled changes, urges, periods of memory loss, trying to hold a job etc. This book takes a grittier look at the consequences of being a shifter in the modern world.

In any case, the title for this book refers to 'diner slang' for a cup of black coffee. The sequel is Gentleman Takes a Chance, slang for diner hash, and which happened to be the last order mentioned at the end of Draw One in the Dark. I'm about halfway through Gentleman, and I can only hope there is reference to a third title for this series!

Now as long as she’s not banned from Kindle I have so much to look forward to in 2021. Started with this series this month but there are many of her titles to enjoy. While I haven’t written any books from a dream, I’ve had many remarkable life experiences all foretold that way. Glad this book was started at way. Feel free to read the afterword first.

Great plot, pacing, and characters but the editing errors are so very distracting. I don't think it's the author as I've read other books from her. Might be a consequence of switching from print to Kindle, but when there's an error every page or page and a half its tiresome. And it's tiresome and vexing because it's entirely preventable. Otherwise thus would have been five stars. Bring on book two!
