5.0 out of 5 starsNever fails to hook me.

Mr. Akart's books have never once failed to reel me in to read entire series. This one is definitely no exception. Given real world affairs I glean a lot of knowledge not just about history but also about survival.

3.0 out of 5 starsReally short books for the price - a little too formulaic
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 17, 2022
I like Bobby Akart - I really do. He is a solid writer. I have read a couple of his series now. I have two complaints that he could easily fix. First, these are really short books but still carry a pretty hefty price tag. I've read hundreds of books on my kindle and each of the Bobby Akart books are small - period. That is compounded by the fact that Bobby, or his publisher, chooses to put over 50 pages of "filler" in each book. I'm talking about all of the news clips, quotes etc. that precede every book body as well as the full/empty chapter pages (and a handful of illustrations which are pretty much a waste). After forwarding past all of these news clips and quotes, my page counter at the bottom of the screen said I was 17% into the book before it actually started! Now multiply the $5 ea. times 5 or 6 in the series and you are in for $30 for what another book/series with the same amount of content, would cost half that.

Second, I noticed he is a bit formulaic. Both series I have read of his revolve around a family spread out across the country when the big disaster hits and the characters have to find their way "home". Geostorm was like this and so is Nuclear Winter. Beyond what I have outlined above, I would not be likely to purchase another series from him afraid of it being more of the same formula. Bobby, your writing is imaginative, intelligent, (except as others have stated, the serial killer in this series is out of place) and entertaining. I think I'm done primarily because of the short books with all the filler but I will keep an eye out for future books of his and the comments attached to them. Thanks for reading.

Then you’ll love this one.

I’m putting it down at 43% read because I don’t need the complete backstory of every character, important or not, each time they appear in a scene. I also don’t need complete explanations of, of all things, the Cuban Missile Crisis right in the middle of a conversation. Or the subtle variations in key limes. Or name-dropping all the brand names (even Apple AirPods).

I can look that stuff up if I want to know more.

It’s like the author is reading this book to me and every time we get some new topic or idea, he turns to me and explains it, taking as long as he needs. Whether I asked for an explanation or not.

Putting in the hard work to write novels and doing it with a basic level of coherence and grammar is indeed admirable. But it’s no substitute for quality storytelling. Modern skilled storytellers are a rare and precious few and this author is not one of them.

I picked this book up because of the promise on the cover, the first several paragraphs, and some of the 3-4 star reviews.

However, I care not one whit for key limes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not his best work.

Not sure where to start. Oh, well how about page 1. Which is about 20 pages of nonsense till the story actually starts. Then I hate to say it, but it just gets worse. Explanations excessive. If that can be a sentence that's where I'm going. Bobby, less is more. So I get through most of the mundane, (which is 80% of this series) and am waiting for a relief ending. I'm watching how close I am to the end and I'm like uh oh. Yup, just like that "the end". I have to say, save your money. Also I have to add, has anyone noticed the size of books anymore? Novels used to be long and good stories. Now it's a series of very short books #1 - OMG. I read this series in 1 day. 5 pages in between each chapter was nonsense. I really miss the long novels. I get writing has changed with advancement, but with that the stories are becoming over characterized and under thoughtful, unimaginative I guess. I need to say also I have read a few of Bobby's series and enjoyed most. Not this one so much. Thank you Bobby.

2.0 out of 5 stars Scattered storyline with a weak conclusion

The story took quite a while to connect the dots, and the ending was weak. It feels like the sequel was already written and they just picked a random place to stop the first book. Generally disappointing ending.

The story drugged, but I understand it was the first in the series. Still there was a lot of history. Hopefully the 2nd book picks up.

2.0 out of 5 stars Same old, same old…

The entire series could have been condensed in to 2 books. And every series Akart has done follows the same road map…disaster, rich family, psycho killer, unhinged politician. Blah, blah, blah. If you’ve read one, you’ve read them all.

2.0 out of 5 stars Drivel

Spoiler Alert!

Got 65% of the book read but couldn't finish. So far fetched, so ridiculous, from a newspaper reporter who gets a state dept staffer to spill the beans on a highly classified mission, to the US deploying a "first stike" against North Korea without provocation. Then there's the nuclear war between India and Pakistan that starts because.....? Not sure why 2 densely populated countries would risk destroying their own people. Lastly, the story of the Ag Secy telling all to the owner of a hotel in the keys that she just met is too much BS for me. This book is pure drivel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Typical TEOTWAWKI
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 26, 2021
Meh. A decent series with an interesting (but highly flawed) premise of the after effects of nuclear war. The author overuses the trick of ending almost every section with some sort of crude foreshadowing like “he fell to safety, not or at least he thought he was safe…”. He is also a typical right wing biased author who has the lefty POTUS declare martial law to a point that “even the media was surprised”, suspends 2A, and paints highly racist portraits of non-white characters. Ultimately, the story is decent but the right wing bs and the sloppy writing doom this series for me.
