This is a well written cozy series with some decent takes on typical componets. The widow who moves to a new place to start over is typical, but the teenage daughter makes an interesting twist giving the heroine someone else to consider in her decisions and actions. The ghost who was murdered is a good device to tie the stories together as is the search for what really happened to her husband. One thing I have trouble with is the police being willing to work with her on cases. I find this unlikely, and it is a problem in many cozy mysteries. I'd say overall a good story and a solid series.
Hope is looking forward to the end of the school year, and daughter Cori is asking for a kitten. So along with teaching full time in the middle school, working part time in the bakery with her friend Edsel and being a Mom to Cori, Hope really doesn’t have much time to herself. So when Edsel tells her about her dreams of a ghost, and then finds her neighbor murdered next door, you know that Hope has to jump in and help solve the murder. Let us not forget, Hope is also trying to learn why her husband Doug was killed, solve the murder of Max, the resident ghost in her house and what a secret room, and handsome landscaper all keep you reading way into the night and leaves you wanting more.
I hoping things will work out between Hope and Luke . I'm glad she's taking that step all be it slowly. I love these mysteries. And yes I started with book 1 they all bet 5+stars from me even though this is the only one I've rated .This book made me extremely happy and I shed tears at the end when she told Luke yes and they're starting out as friends first .Happy reading y'all .
I have really enjoyed these Hope Herring mysteries. Two past mysteries woven successfully around a current one. The main characters have grown, adapted, and achieved a return to a more normal life after a terrible tragedy.
A plus is paranormal interaction with the former owner of their new home.
The only regret is my desire for longer interaction with all the delightful characters, current and past, saddens me as the book ends too quickly. I am keeping my hopes up, though, not only will they continue to have adventures , but they will lengthen.
Hope’s Bakery boss Edsel has been having the same dream for a few days. She tells Hope that the woman in the dream is asking her to speak to Hope. When she finds out who the woman is and that she’s been dead for a few days both of them realize that she wants Hope to investigate.
I like the concept of helpful ghosts. This is an interesting series. It has a hominess to it along with good commonsense ideas and characters that you would like to know. The storyline has a continuous part pared with a new mystery in every book. I look forward to reading more of this series.
J A Whiting & Nell McCarthy are excellent writers so saying this was one of their best says a lot! I love the characters, the plot, and the mysteries (1 short - solved, 2 long term - gradually & steadily step-by-step being worked out). The characters are great - there is a lot of depth and "finish work". I really like that the situations are organic - there is no stretching the characters or "throwing in an alien" (something that there is no way makes sense in this story) just to keep the series alive. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with some ghosts thrown in!
