5.0 out of 5 starsThere is no problem so great that the proper application of lead and plastic explosives can't fix.

An exceptionally fitting continuation of the epic saga of our favorite Rangers. The authors ramp up both the danger and the action in this second installment of the series. You want bullets flying? You want magic? You want ancient and ethereal creatures, good and bad? You want epic characters that refuse to die no matter the situation? This is the book for you. The characters from the first book continue to grow and achieve as well as adapt to their new circumstances. As I said in my review of the first book, "The best way I can describe it is a base of Tolkein, a sprig of Dragonlance, a strong essence of DnD, finished with a perfect topping of Clancy or Kratman." This is the ultimate DnD epic for anyone that always wanted to see what America's finest infantrymen could do in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. Get this book and enjoy it. Fix Bayonets! RLTW!

I was really hoping that they'd start actually telling the story in book two, but, no.
Very, very detailed description of combat, yes. No explanation of why they are fighting, but certainly dealing with the entire "undead" category of the Monster Manual.

You can basically just skip to chapter 26 (Here, I'll summarize - fight, fight, fight, coffee, I'm a coffee addict, fight, fight, pick up McGuffin which never even makes another appearance in the book, fight, coffee, fight, coffee, fight, fight, fight.) Read chapter 26 and 27. Then fight, fight, I wish I had more coffee, fight BBEG, read the last two pages and the epilogue. There, I've saved you several hours of slogging through this.

5.0 out of 5 stars BOO(M)!
Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2021
If the concept of an elite group of mostly Army Rangers flung into a far future Earth (now called Ruin) combating seemingly endless hordes of undead creatures straight out of an AD&D campaign with barely a breather between intensely action-packed battles sounds enticing, then Hit & Fade could be your bag. If you love -- and I mean really love -- coffee, then there's something for you too.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first Forgotten Ruin book so this one was a no-brainer. I highly recommend reading it first as you'll get much more out of the story and characters. There is literally nothing that you can't count out as being possible in the Ruin, and that makes it tons of fun to read. I've got book three on my list and am looking forward to losing myself in the mayhem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page turner that I can't put down.

I'm not 'swords and sorcery' type.....so this is a departure for me. If I didn't like this author, I wouldn't have given this book a shot. If I wasn't an Airborne Ranger, I wouldn't have given this book a shot. But I'm both...and am glad I strayed from my normal reading routine. I feel like I know the characters....because I have known folks like them. This isn't for every reader of Sci Fi....but if you're a service member....or wish you'd served, this is a great series. I seldom pre-order books. For this series, I made an exception. I'll continue to do that...because I'm sucked in. Rangers Lead the Way.

Wow. These two authors are known for the Legionnaire series of books, which were a mix of military and sci-fi genre. But this new series from them is....bloody brilliant.

One obvious negative aspect of this new series is that the books just are not long enough. Sure, they're normal-sized books, but the story is so interesting that you just don't want them to end.

The second book in the series is one single battle. Again through the eyes of a linguist who is starting to find his feet, we have elite US military personnel accidentally stuck 10,000 years in the future conducting an epic recon-by-fire of off tens-of-thousands of Tolkien-era fantasy creatures.

We also start to see the impact of the future on the physiology of the elite soldiers, changing some of them into something...more.

An excellent second book of the series, but once again, just not long enough.

Like the Ranger and Ranger thoughts, models, sayings, etc. Brings back my time in the early 80's at Womack Army Hospital, as a pharmacy tech amidst the 82nd, 18th AC, and SF. Definitely remember the "leg" comments, and my CSM offering me airborne school with the promise of joining the division upon completion. As I was shortly to be married to my fiancee finishing college, I politely declined, I believe I even said something to the effect "I want to sleep next to my wife, not in a tent.". 40 years later, still sleeping by the same woman.
Good story, adapting and overcoming. D&D, endless varieties of monsters, losing soldiers, making tough calls. It keeps you engaged in the story, without being wrapped up in the minutia(?) Of: the M16A1 is a shoulder-fired, gas operated, semi-automatic rifle, capable of automatic fire, etc, etc, etc.
Heading to book 3 now.

Take your favorite military novel and throw it into a mental blender. Now mix it with some Tolkien, throw in the Shannara novels, add a little Walking Dead and dash of D&D. What you end up with would taste awful but all those concepts combined would still pale in comparison to this well thought out and extremely interesting series. I was a fantasy junkie growing up but moved into science fiction and military books as I got older. This series has captured all of my booklove in one series.

Just buy it. You will love it.

Fantasy and sci-fi walk into a bar and start a fight with the Undead Bouncers. And past and Cole once again give us a rousing tale of high speed low drag warriors facing insurmountable odds and kicking butt. Irreverent military humor and stuffy wizards are a fun combination, who knew?

I'm hooked! Loved the first book and book two continues with the same fast pace and great characters. Not many books make me cheer and laugh out loud but this one does it. Anxiously waiting for the next installment in what's hopefully a very long series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Talker talks a lot but says very little

The first book with Talker’s style of archiving the fights was interest and slightly irritating. Now it is very irritating and only slightly interesting. The first combat in this book could have lost 40 pages and still covered most of the fight. And some detail is getting lost in the mist of thousands of words, where a few dozen would do.
