5.0 out of 5 starsWhat are we going to do with Johnny Hayes?

I just finished "Wishin and Waitin" when it spied this novel and liked the synopsis. It proved to be all I expected and more. I have NEVER been disappointed with a R O Lane novel!!! The characters in this novel were bigger and tougher than life itself. But they seceded because they did it the old fashioned way hard work, long hours, took great risks, did not back down, and a little divine intervention. Mr Lane did a lot of research in introducing the reader to the trade of "muleskinning" or moving freight by wagons pulled by mules. I learned a lot about this trade and the many dangers associated with it. It was very entertaining. But that was only part of the story. There was also the subplots of what is family, forgiveness, humility, goodness and fairness over power and corruption, and the hardships of Western Life. Johnny, Roon, Mateo, Uziah, and Adora proved to be very likeable characters who I hated to leave. I just became so emotionally involved with the story that I could not put the book down. Thanks again Mr Lane!!!

It started off okay but at times it reads kind of like somebody’s diary, a little too simple. It really kills a book for me when every line spoken/written end with “so&so said”. Generally if we’re paying attention we know speaks the lines.
I have read some of the author’s books that I liked better than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! This Was a Compelling and Thoroughly Enjoyable Old Western Tale! Enjoy!

R O Lane is now one of my favorite authors. To date, I have not read one of his books that I did not thoroughly enjoy. Johnny Hayes is a 187-page old Western tale, that was a quick, easy, and fun read that I found hard to put down. Folks, this author knows how to write memorable stories that will not only touch your heart, but will also leave you yearning for more of his entertaining spellbinding tales.

Lane knows how to develop both characters and storylines that are mesmerizing and so intriguing that is is really difficult to put them down.

While Johnny’s mother was a school teacher whose best student was her son, Johnny’s formal education ended while he was in the sixth grade when his mother died of consumption. Johnny’s father disappeared from his life when he was a very young man. His mother never stopped loving him until the day she died.

Nevertheless, Johnny was completely alone with no known relatives when his mother died. He was hired by a kind business owner who hauled supplies by mules and wagons and provided room and board.

When that business owner went out of business, Johnny and a trusted business associate, Roon, who helped Johnny learn the trade became like a step-father to him started their own mule skinner business hauling freight to various businesses. They grew the company and hired a young man named Mateo and trained him much like Roon trained Johnny.

Not knowing whether his father was alive or dead, Johnny searched far and wide concerning his fathers whereabouts. One day, Mateo heard the name Uriah and inquired whether the man’s last name was Uriah. It turned out that Uriah was indeed Johnny’s father and that the reason he disappeared was because he was unjustly convicted and served a sentence at hard labor after killing a man in self defense.

Johnny hired his father and continued to grow his business with Roon while he studied to be a lawyer.

Having helped a family on the road whose carriage had broken down on the road, Johnny fell in love with the couple’s daughter, but when the father learned that Johnny’s father had served time in prison,, he decided that Johnny was not fit to wed his daughter, Adora in spite of the fact that they were head over heels in love with each other.

Will Johnny and Adora end up getting married? Well, you will have to read this book to find out, but I will guarantee that this is a book with a satisfying ending that you will probably enjoy as much as I did.

I recommend this old Western tale to family, friends, and others who enjoy this genre and love a compelling tale that is completely entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable!

Enjoy!

This story starts off telling of us of a 12 year old orphan who has to start doing a man's work to survive. The next 6 years fly by as he matures, gets into various scrapes, falls in love with the daughter of a rancher who holds a large land grant from before New Mexico was part of the United States, marries her and becomes a lawyer. Having the epilogue written in the voice of his bride is an interesting touch. For those readers fluent in Spanish and English, the dialogue translation is repetitive. And at times the colloquial Spanish, though completely understandable, doesn't ring quite true as authentic Spanish.

I found this book to be very entertaining and enjoyable. What I appreciate most about RO Lane’s stories is the ability to write a memorable book without using excessive profanity and graphic sexual scenarios. That in itself is such a refreshing relief from so many authors. If you’re looking for historical stories that entertainment as well as educate you on “how it was” then you just might want to read this one and others from R O Lane.

R. O. Lane does not disappoint his readers with this outstanding story. It’s a true grit story of a young very responsible and bright boy named Jonny Hayes, who is orphaned at age 13 when his mother dies of consumption. He owes the doctor, the pharmacy and the funeral home who don’t expect to see their money. Johnny is offered a job by a freight company owner who said he will teach him the business and have his drivers teach him to be a teamster. Quite a story of courage, determination and caring. Another home run by R. O. Lane!

Jonny Hays likes to read. Before her death his mother, a teacher, instilled in him the love of expanding the experience of his life through the books she provided. On his own at age 12 after her death and without any knowledge of the whereabouts of his father who had disappeared several years before, Jonny builds his life with strength of purpose and a work ethic that empowers him.
His love of reading enables his success in business and a professional career.
This satisfying story includes adventures, danger, and romance.
I hope R.O. Lane continues to provide such enjoyable reading.

I don’t believe in spoilers but I do believe in Mr Lane and his wonderful stories! I have yet to read anything even remotely disappointing from him and I’ve read everything he’s written. His characters are strong and honest, polite and courteous until they need to be otherwise. He also doesn’t add smut or filthy language like so many authors do and it is truly refreshing. I look forward to the next book!

As usual R O Lane has written another great story. I kept waiting for the young Johnny to get into a gunfight which to my surprise never happened but still he displayed a lot of strength and intestinal fortitude in situations. The romance was just right love at first sight and never giving in or up to father’s expectations. A very good read highly recommend to others. I have read all of me lane’s books and highly recommend all!

I stand very impressed. Characters are sensitive when that’s called for, yet deadly tough when that is needed. Good life lessons here. High moral ground. Yet the mild cursing is true to life…a positive for reality. Like your historical accurate background info. Good job author.
