I just finished "Wishin and Waitin" when it spied this novel and liked the synopsis. It proved to be all I expected and more. I have NEVER been disappointed with a R O Lane novel!!! The characters in this novel were bigger and tougher than life itself. But they seceded because they did it the old fashioned way hard work, long hours, took great risks, did not back down, and a little divine intervention. Mr Lane did a lot of research in introducing the reader to the trade of "muleskinning" or moving freight by wagons pulled by mules. I learned a lot about this trade and the many dangers associated with it. It was very entertaining. But that was only part of the story. There was also the subplots of what is family, forgiveness, humility, goodness and fairness over power and corruption, and the hardships of Western Life. Johnny, Roon, Mateo, Uziah, and Adora proved to be very likeable characters who I hated to leave. I just became so emotionally involved with the story that I could not put the book down. Thanks again Mr Lane!!!
