If you need a recommendation to get started, I enjoyed “HAPPILY EVERMORE” by Victoria Fletcher, about a sweet but poor gentleman who saved the king from certain death, was made a knight for his bravery, and married the princess he loved. It was wonderful and truly did have all the makings of a nostalgic childhood fairy tale that would have all little girls dreaming about their own Prince Charming. It's a fun idea to pose a writing challenge to a group of authors. Apparently, that is the genesis of this particular anthology of fantasy and fairytale short stories. And these are, indeed, short stories, though they do range in length. The book is only 328 pages and includes 18 stories, making the average story just shy of 20 pages long. You'll find a range of fantasy tales here, from ones told in true fairytale fashion to more dark and edgy ones. You’ll also find romance and adventure. If you're not particularly wild about a particular story or author, it won't take long to get to the next one! That's part of the fun of an anthology like this, allowing you to get just a taste of a particular author, certain characters, and story types. If you enjoy fantasy and fairy tales, you will most likely enjoy this collection.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This collection has a little bit of everything. Stories that made me shiver. Stories that made me laugh. Even stories that made me want to bawl my eyes out. Of course, there were some stories that I loved more than others, but that seems to be the way with anthologies. Especially ones with offerings as diverse as this one. They’re all quick little reads, but they’ve given me a good idea of each author’s style. There are some in here I expect to become new favorites. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Booksprout.
