I am an adult reading a young person's novel, but a neat happy ending betrays the Camelot story.
The enduring heartbreaking tragedy of the original tale centers on a woman who loved two men and the consequences of her actions.
I applaud the positive message for teens, but the book is too far fetched.

Bring the tissues and your favorite treat. You're going to need them. This has both enriched and bleached my heart. So much love and dispear, plotting and planning and stunningly brilliant realizations are lovingly crafted into this memorable tale. It's epic and it's so much grander than it's predecessors. This is the Arthurian legend that should always have been told!

Guinevere has my heart, like all of it. She desires to do the right thing, and sometimes the way forward is covered in brambles and briar. But always, it's her wish to save the island and it's people. It's ingrained into her make-up. She is the perfectly imperfect character that you're going to adore.

I have to say the twist of Lancelot's gender was vastly intriguing. It made for a lot of whats ifs and what could bes. And it's my belief that this spectacular author created a version that is easy to champion.

Arthur has my heart as well. Who doesn't want him to have his queen's heart? He was just a boy trying to rule a kingdom when so much was against him. And having a magical influence that had unsavory intentions was never going to serve him well.

There was so much to cheer for in this unputdownable trilogy. I can't wait to go back and experience it all again. Kiersten White is mesmerizing and so very gifted. She's heading the tippy top of my favorite authors.

This is not a good series to read after ACOTAR. It will let you down. You will enjoy it more after you've read a boring book or a DNF.

2.0 out of 5 stars One star for Finna

I love the first two books but I found it difficult to like this one. One star for Finna and one star for such a creative trilogy. *possible spoilers * I seem to be alone in my thinking but I am not a fan of casual affairs. Why are we normalizing this, why was it not resolved, why is honesty and loyalty not as sought after as bravery and feminism? Don’t get me wrong, I was team Emo-Loki, but the way things played out, a lot of the ending relationships were so cringe to me. I was so excited for this book release, I guess my expectations were too firm. Maybe I’ll try and reread it in a few years without them and I’ll be able to enjoy this ending more.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed

Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy of THE EXCALIBUR CURSE by Kiersten White. I enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy, but I was a little disappointed in the finale. Honestly, I was just disappointed my ship didn't win out. But also, I think that's partly because that was the ship that had actual romantic and sexual tension and was actually built up to throughout the entire series. The person that was suggested to be Guinevere's actual "love" instead of just her "passion" (as my ship was, ahem) was just boring to me, I felt nothing for it. It seemed like Guinevere kept trying to convince me it was the best, the one that was actually love, but once I realized the book was going that direction I almost completely lost interest. I guess I was in it for the romance. That's pretty typical of me. Those who were rooting for the ship that was touted at the one of true "love" will feel very differently though, obviously. I actually did like the more open-ended close to the book and loved the overall theme that there is nothing more powerful and important than a girl.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Ending of a Trilogy That Misses the Mark
Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2021
I've enjoyed this trilogy so much. I've always been a huge fan of King Arthur and Camelot, and this series brought so much joy to my heart!

That being said, this final installment didn't quite hit the mark for me. It felt different from the previous two books, and left me feeling a little unsatisfied at its conclusion.

For better or for worse, I felt like a lot of the things that the previous books had been leading up to either fell short or were pushed to the side never to be heard from again. While I enjoyed finally learning about Guinevere's past, even that was not enough to save it for me.

Fina was a great new character addition, but even she couldn't get this book to where it needed to be. And, as I should have known, my dear Mordred didn't get the arc he deserved either.

I felt as if all of the growth and girl-power strength Guinevere showed in the first two books disappeared in favor of a girl I didn't recognize, let alone want to cheer on. But, it wasn't all bad, don't get me wrong. I think it's a very interesting take on the Arthurian legend, and it was exciting getting to see it unfold from Guinevere's perspective for a change.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite

Excuse me while I go around and pick up all the shattered pieces of my heart... I went in expecting too much, and as a result I've been DISAPPOINTED. *Cue sobs*

Possible spoilers ahead, so stop reading

Right

Now

If you don't want to be spoiled on anything.

If you haven't stopped by now, it's your own fault.

I'm trying to separate myself from what I was expecting out of this book, and look at it with a neutral POV and pretend that I didn't love my Morally Grey Mordred just a little, but it's HARD. This was so promising, and I've invested so much time into reading this series... And the end was just a little bit of a let down for me.

Mordred was top notch, as per usual. We get to see that Arthur is not as good as we once thought, and I have no problems with Lancelot.

I was hoping there would be a way for everyone to get their HEA, but Holy Heck, Guinevere was SO darn wishy washy with her feelings towards everyone, I didn't want her to end up with ANYONE...

This book felt like a middle book, and not an end book to me. New characters were introduced, and things at the end felt all loose ended to me. It's not a horrible book, just not the one for me.

*Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Children's, Delacorte Press for allowing me to read an e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100 % mine*

2.0 out of 5 stars Review - The Excalibur Curse
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2022
Initial Thoughts
I had such high hopes for this book. I’ve read all three books on NetGalley so it was almost surreal to come full circle on a series like this. I had no idea when I started my bookstagram account that I’d read this much!

One Things I Liked
Mordred. He’s pretty much the only good thing to come out of this book.

Some Things I Wasn’t Crazy About
Total character change for Guinevere. I feel like all the growth and positive changes Guinevere made in book 2 were completely washed away in this book. She became somewhat irrational and self loathing.
The “big reveal”. I thought the truth about Guinevere was also kind of a throw away.
The romance. I hated pretty much every aspect of how the romances played out in this story. I was team Mordred but even if you didn’t have a team, Guinevere’s wishy washy attitude made it difficult for you to want her to end up with anyone. She was confused for the entire story and the ending still has no resolution.

Series Value
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series but this one basically ruined it. I wouldn’t read this again and honestly, it makes me not want to read any of Kiersten White’s other books.

Final Thoughts
This was probably one of the biggest let down reads I’ve had in a while.
