Great coming of age story to breakdown stereotypes of Asians but the basketball is trash
Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2021
A dad who’s been to jail, a dysfunctional family, and a son who wants to make it in basketball? This is not your usual Asian American story. This is the brainchild of Eddie Huang. Diversity isn’t just about having movies about different kinds of people, it’s about different kinds of stories. The plot is about breaking down stereotypes about Asians. America’s Best Dance Crew showed Asians can dance. Bruno Mars proved Asians can sing and make hits. Jeremy Lin made the NBA, but most people still don’t believe. Eddie Huang’s Boogie is one more crack in the wall. Taylor Takahashi is compelling as the lead in this coming of age story. He and his girlfriend Taylour Paige are good together. Here’s the one thing. The basketball scenes are bad. There’s no tension or excitement for a sport that exudes those qualities. There’s just no action. Whoever choreographed the games should’ve been fired. So the movie is nice but the basketball is trash.
