5.0 out of 5 starsCAS AND POPPY WHO? NAH SERA AND NYKTOS!
Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021
A Shadow In the Ember is I guess you could say a spinoff prequel to Jennifer Armentrout's widely successful From Blood and Ash series. It takes place in the same world, just a reeeeeally long time before the events in FB&A. In this we meet Seraphena(Sera) who has been chosen and trained for one thing and one thing only. Make the primal of death fall in love with her, then end him. Its the only way she knows how to save her kingdom. But When that time comes, things don't go as planned and now Sera has to face a new reality, Or so she thought. When the primal does come, he is like nothing she was expecting. The slow burn of Sera and Nyktos was one of the best ones I have read in a really long time.
I thought no one could beat out Poppy and Casteel(from Blood and Ash) for my fav couple, but I'm telling you now, SERA & NYKTOS have surpassed them so much and this only the first book in this series! Sera is everything you want in a strong female lead. Cunning, smart, fierce, strong and yet, vulnerable and loyal. And Nyktos is...he's...well he's Nyktos. He's a Primal, THE Primal of death and gives of BDE(Big D Energy) BIG TIME! The book answers a few questions we may have from the Blood and Ash world, and tied in some key elements that we will need for the next book in the Blood and Ash world. It also left me with my pulse literally racing by the end and my mind blown.

I have been a long time reader of Jennifer's and the way she wove this story into all the elements from the past and what I hope will come in later books is simply amazing.
I feel like I say this with every book she puts out lately, but this book was amazing! I'm speechless at how much this world has grown and how it keeps growing! I can't wait for the next book!

2.0 out of 5 starsNothing New - Poppy and Casteel Recycled
Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021
I was very excited for this book after reading and enjoying the Blood and Ash novels. This book is related to those as part of a prequel story. I'm a little over half way though this book so far and I'm sad to say I'm struggling to get further. In my opinion there is a bit too much of Poppy and Casteel's story recycled into this one. I do acknowledge that some of these elements were surely intentional. The author intended for there to be parallels between the two stories and some of the characters in this story may be ancestors to the ones in the Blood and Ash books. However this feels a little too similar to the point where it's not its own story. The relationship dynamics of the main couple are extremely similar between the two, down to a particular violent act each lady takes against her male counterpart. The dynamics between Nyktos' friends and supporters are very similar to those of Casteel, unwavering loyalty with a side of quippy remarks. You could swap out Sera's step sister for Poppy's close female friend. Both leading ladies additionally have a protective and supportive father-like male who trains them how to fight, defend, and otherwise utilize their inherent fearlessness. Both women were raised to be extremely sheltered and also have a secret gift they don't understand. Basically if you swapped out some names I could be convinced that this is either a retelling of that story or a fan fiction that kept consistent characterization. Maybe this is intended to be done in a way that adds to this setting but to me it is mostly just feels recycled. If you're looking for a new interesting story this is just more of the same. If you want more of the same you will enjoy it.

How can anyone give a 5 STAR rating and review to a book that takes that moment where it's time to "flip the table over" and up-end the characters world and insert a heaping pile of distrust (where the author own "storyline setup" suggests this couldn't be the case)...??? This writing "plot-ploy" was done to exhaustion in the book *A Kingdom of Flesh & Fire* with Poppy & Casteel, but I forgave it in them because a lot had happened between them and Poppy's world had been seriously jacked-up... so I road out that melodrama! Yet it sure a heck did not leave me hoping that I could read more books with new characters that have an ounce of that same nonsensical distrust.

BUT HERE WE GO!!!

I will think twice before buying future books by this author because she is lazy when building complex characters with stability in their rationalizing. Which is sad because this book does have it's charms and I feel the author does a lot of subtle "Hat-Tipping" to the book A Kingdom of Dreams which surely inspired her to write From Blood and Ash in the first place (and do a terrific job at worldbuilding and expanding a 'similar basic premise' into it's own JUGGERNAUT kingdom!)

I feel like Jennifer Armentrout responded with the same feeling that I had (wanting more from the characters in that book) and made the From Blood & Ash Series to show 'how it should be done' (by allowing the readers to keep on living inside a multitude of books featuring the same great characters...) and I am totally on board with that! I will even read spinoffs!!!

But don't write characters that have the emotional intelligence of a 12 year olds (unless the median-age of your readership is 12)

I took away 2 STARS for being forced to endure the "Distrust as a plot point trope" because it has officially become cliché or trope-like - which is shameful to do to readers who want to enjoy well-written books!
I took away 1 STAR for the ungodly amount of "Info-dump" dialog and expository. The book is mostly a large worldbuilding info-dump delivered in an interesting manner - THAT would have caused me to give a 4 STAR review... (so if you are cool with the Poppy/Casteel characters-arch where they were "pretending" but "not pretending" exhaustively... this book is for you!)

BUT **SPOILERS AHEAD** ...I expect an author to do better/try harder in granting characters functioning communication skills, including the ability to think critically! Especially if the characters have been around for several decades, are presented as PRIMALS or GODLIKE BEINGS (who can supposedly sense emotions). In this book "Sera" had fallen for "Ash" and had feelings for him before she knew who he actually was... So later in the story it is absolutely absurd that (when he basically has hurt feelings over learning that she was trained to be an assassin) the plot tension is hanging on him feeling "distrust" and "betrayal" and resorts to accusing her of having somehow tricked him by faking her emotions. I for one was thinking "WTF? She didn't know who he was and believed he was ASH when they started hanging out... So why wouldn't her feelings be real?"

There is an older term in in literature called "torturing the connections" and that seems to be what happens to some really good storyline epiphanies that this author employees. Don't insult your readers by creating emotional discords that must be resolved in addition to a great story arch. It's like building a modern-day mansion that relies on an outhouse.

A Shadow in the Ember is book one of the Flesh and Fire series, which is a companion to the Blood and Ash series.

This is the story of Nyktos, the Primal of Death, and Sera, his Consort.

Nyktos and Sera have never had a choice. A deal made centuries ago has bound them together. Trained to become his weakness, Sera must get Nyktos to fall in love with her. But is the Primal of Death even capable of such an emotion?

Nyktos is so much more than The Primal of Death, and there is a reason his people feel safe with him.

He is protective and thoughtful. His sweetness to Sera, and his willingness to give her what she needs, without taking for himself, speaks volumes. And it also seems like the complete opposite of what one would assume the Primal of Death to actually be like. He has a conscience and understands what taking a life does to the soul.

But he is also closed off and in need of more.

Don't get me wrong. He is powerful and dangerous, and he can be eerily calm, detached, and downright scary. His power is unbelievable and unfathomable.

It's interesting to see Nyktos here after meeting him in TCOGB. In TCOGB, he seems a little broken (for obvious reasons). Here, he is so young and humorous (at times), but he is also jaded and burdened by so many things. Seeing him open up to Sera is both beautiful and heartbreaking.

Sera was born with a single purpose. End the Primal and restore life to her kingdom. She is fiery, unapologetic, and willful. She is also reckless and impulsive, and seems to have little regard for her own life. And I get it. She was raised to be a weapon with an expiration date.

But Sera is also lonely underneath her bravado. A simple, kind gesture from Nyktos begins to unravel everything, and it places her between duty to a kingdom and loyalty to herself and her heart.

I absolutely love the connection between Sera and Nyktos. And I can't get into the why of it without spoilers. They are so right together, but neither seems to trust easily - or even understand why they cannot seem to stay away.

So many questions from the Blood and Ash series are answered through Nyktos and Sera's story. There are interesting twists, and I am a fan of the larger world building.

We meet some fascinating characters in this story and learn about the politics of Iliseeum - where things aren't necessarily what they seem to be.

I am very much looking forward to book two!

It’s all coming together, and it’s blowing my mind. My heart swelled, I had tears, my stomach was in my throat for most of the book, but it was worth it for Sera and Nyktos.
Words cannot describe how unprepared I was to meet these two. This book has 3 of my favorite things. 1. An amazingly strong heroine. 2. Nyktos, yes, I'm gonna say it, but men like him are my favorite things. 3. Murder and blood and vengence (don't judge me).
I love prequels, I want to see where things come from and how they came to be and with each page I felt like I learned more and more about the FBAA world and I came to so many realizations. The way JLA weaves these stories, the way her mind works to fill in all the gaps, I just can't process it. It is truly amazingly done. I wasn't sure that anything could top FBAA for me, but ASITE just might have done that. It is going to be a LONG wait till the next installment.

Holy baby drakens! This. Book. Get ready to meet your new book bestie and your new book boyfriend! I don’t know what magic Jen possesses but every new book of hers becomes my favorite and the characters carve their way into my heart. If you love Poppy, Cas and friends just wait until you meet Sera, Nyktos and their crew! Did I mention baby drakens? I must say that in chapters 19 and 20 Jen showed a side of her writing finesse that kind of shocked me. It had me on the edge of my seat and I was glad it was over quickly, yet it had me wanting more. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

**Early/Advance copy given for an honest review

SPICE, SPICE, SPIRCE BABY. Just kidding. It is a slow burn in it’s own right but it doesn’t stop you from loving characters that you have had glimpses of.

Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.

However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania—she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission—one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then…end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.

Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeit—it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

A Shadow in the Ember – A masterpiece of it’s own right. Through the fandom of FBAA, we get glimpses of Sera and Nyktos, however this series truly delves into their story. Jennifer L Armentrout is absolutely a queen of her own right within the world. I have always been a fan of her writing and it absolutely astonishes me that she can always grip my attention with something new and exciting. This was another favorite in the series and the cover always blows me away for her books.

I am definitely swooning over Nyktos and him being my book husband. Claimed and never can be annulled 😉 He isn’t just Nyktos, but rather Daddy Nyktos. He is everything you would want in the King of Gods and Primals. An intimidating character that falls at the feet of beautiful Sera for her wittiness and her sass towards him.

Sera is a gorgeous and badass heroine and truly can make anyone speechless. She was raised from birth to make her husband fall in love and become his weakness to kill him. This was her only identity that she has known but she definitely does not allow herself to be stepped on by worse characters. I love that Jen’s characters are always people I want to grow up and be – no matter how old I am right this second. Seraphina is beautiful and definitely does not need anyone, man or Primal to make her feel anything more. Getting a glimpse into Poppy’s actual side of the family makes me realize how much I adored her all over again because family traits.

You’ll want to laugh, cry and everything in between for this book. I felt so much anguish for the characters in the series. You get Primals, gods, badass heroines, drakens and all of the above in the series and I am not mad about it. I have heard some people get mad that it sounds similar to FBAA – Congrats, you are in the FBAA world just ahead of the time of where we met Poppy and Casserole. While this is a prequel, you get more questions answered in this book alone vs if she continued onto the fourth book of the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Reused Content
Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021

The book was just okay. The author reused a lot of the same character content/lore/thematic elements from her previous books, which made the plot very predictable and removed a lot of the uniqueness from the world building and character development. I know this is supposed to be a prequel to her existing series, but I was still hoping for a bit more original content to keep me engaged. A lot of the characters and scenarios felt recycled.

Also if I have to read one more book where the female protagonist is a snarky, belligerent, loud-mouth I'm seriously going to lose it. Where's the appeal there? The protagonist in this book is utterly insufferable 99% of the time, yet I'm supposed to care about her and how she feels/thinks. I don't. I can't stand her. I get that she's had a rough life but there are other, more realistic ways to indicate that without making her character a snotty brat. She doesn't feel like a real, believable person, and it's extremely hard to relate to her character throughout the book.

Beyond all that though, there are a few interesting elements to the plot that are genuinely creative, and some of the side character development is pretty good. If you can get past the reused content and the obnoxious main character, it's not a bad read.

“He was…he was like the brightest star and the deepest night sky given mortal form. And he was utterly beautiful in this form, wholly terrifying.”

I could not wait to get my hands on this book!!! The wait seemed like forever but it was so worth it. Nyktos (swoon Daddy Nyktos) and Sera were freaking everything I wanted them to be and more! Nyktos caught me by surprise and it was such a great little twist to have him be something most males aren’t in novels. I loved the extra information we are given and how it ties into the Blood and Ash series. And I can definitely tell were someone from that series gets their attitude and some of their traits from. I did not want this book to end. I did not want to leave this world that JLA has created. Now I’m off to do a reread of the Blood and Ash series again. It’s best to read From Blood and Ash and the other to books in that series before this one. Highly highly recommend!!

My head is still reeling from this story!

Jennifer Armentrout's writing abilities are just stupendous. Her characters are wonderful even when they are acting dumb you want them to succeed and grow and you feel a connection to them.

This story was no different and I cannot wait to read more. We meet are getting the prequel of Blood and Ash in this new Shadow in the Ember. Let me tell you, you might think it's predictable but .. nope!
It's page turning and it'll keep you guessing.
Get ready for another book in spectacular series.
