This is a nice informative book for a younger reader, not easy-reader level but older kid, and with sources in the back of the book there are more titles you can look into with the child whether for school or not.

3.0 out of 5 starsA view, perhaps overstated, of the problems of race in the USA
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2022
Jemar Tisby earned his PhD at the University of Mississippi with a focus on race, religion, and social movements in the twentieth century. This well-written book is "a guide to standing up for racial justice" for "young readers." He also wrote two similar books for adults. His writing seems to be influenced by his religious views and by the theory that racism began in the USA in 1619 with the arrival of a slave ship. However, he also says that Christopher Columbus was a racist, thinking that all people of color, including the Indians, are inferior beings but good workers. He defines difficult words for his young readers, such as nationalism, and ends many chapters with "Questions to Consider" such as "What facts were you surprised to learn about the history of racism in America.?" and "What might Vice President Kamala Harris feel pressured by society with regard to her race?" and "How do you think God would describe you?"

3.0 out of 5 stars Awareness ~ Relationships ~ Commitment

these three are the ARC by which author, Jamarcus Tisby, approaches the subject of fighting racism.

Tisby begins his book by introducing himself and the topic. Words and concepts are defined and Christianity is identified as the underlying motivation for his efforts. Definitions appear in highlighted boxes making them easy to locate. Biblical references are from the NIV translation unless otherwise noted. The book is well organized, written at a level for mature 10+ year olds and each chapter ends with a few “questions to consider” that challenge the reader to personalize the information. These will aid adults in discussing the material with their children.

History is a big part of this book and it’s necessary to lay the groundwork to arrive at 21st century racial justice issues. What I didn’t find necessary was the author’s very heavy thumb on the story scale. His opinions, IMO, bend some history and what’s worse, lead kids in their thinking. When presented with truth, especially gospel based truth, it will convict and lead to action as ordained not as manipulated. It’s for these reasons I gave the book 3 instead of 4 stars.

Mini bios of key figures tell the story for the fight of racial justice: Emmett Till, Frederick Douglass, Jim Crow, Linda Brown, Ruby Bridges, Howard Thurman, Rosa Parks and the contemporary figures tat have consumed the news over the last few years. Altho’ progress has been made, we’ve got miles to go. This is the section on relationships.

Commitment is section three and it focuses on how the reader can help: Love God & Neighbor, Bear Witness for Christ, Budget for Justice, Run for Student Government, Interrupt Ignorance, Admit When You’re Wrong, Go to Meetings, Write Letters and more. Not all of these are appropriate at every age or for everyone but are suggestions for how to participate. I tho’t this was the most useful part of the book. It’s followed by a glossary of terms which is also rather helpful.

All things considered, presented from a Christian perspective but tinges of bias effect the history/story📚

3.0 out of 5 stars You Do Not Have To Be A Christian To FIght Racism

This is difficult for me to review. The audience is young blacks from age 8 to 12. That is fine for me, I am a 75 year white woman. The parts that were difficult to read was the assumption that the audience is Christian. There a lot of references to Bible which is fine. But I thought this is not appropriate for young Muslims, Jews and all other religions that do not believe that the Christian religion is the only religuon for people. I think that I objecting for myself too. A few of the questions at the end of the chapter were only for Christians. The author did reference
places in the bible that were fine but again it was the questions that I thought were too exclusive, assuming that Christinity is only way to fight racism.

Now what I liked and loved. The emphasis on fighting racism by forming friendships with people who are not like you. That made me feel very comfortable because I do that a lot and would love it if more people did. the history of racism was well written. When I was going up the Reconstruction Period was skipped. I remember seeing a political cartoon in for that period that gave me the creeps. It was definitely racist. I want to read the truth of that period. I will be looking for book on that

The author has short chapters on fighters against racism, for me the most inspiring is the one of Fannie Lou Hamer. It is short and leaves out the most heartbreaking moments of her life. I found audio and visual on the Internet that fills many of the holes and is example of a woman who spoke of the importance of voter registration and the power of the vote. Also the painful and deadly struggle for voting rights.

My thoughts: this is a well-written guide to understanding and combating racism written for young adult0s. It is written in the Christian point of view which will make it ideal for Christian schools or Christian parents but not so much for the public school sector. It explains to history of slavery in addition to discussing misconceptions that people have against people of other races. That includes White against black and vice versa. In today's world it is important that everybody needs to learn to get along no matter what color skin you have. We are not segregated and we will never be a segregated again. Intermarriages àre common and so are mixed race neighborhoods. I live in an area where there are not very many people of color. It is rural and forested and in the south and whites are mostly the residents. However, even here there are people of color and we need to get along. My daughter interacts with some Hispanics and she is interested in learning about their culture and she wanted to read this book when I finished reviewing it. There are discussions and questions included at the end of the chapters which would make it ideal for studies either on a private basis or in a group setting. If you are looking for a book on racism and understanding and combating it this would be a book to consider. It is very well written. I was given a copy free and all opinions are my own

5.0 out of 5 stars Read with my 11 year old

My daughter is biracial and my spouse is black. While I grew up with most of my best friends, and boyfriend, being different races than me- and while I knew of some of their experiences and spent a lot of time with their families- it was not until I was an adult married to my spouse (and also when my daughter was born) until my eyes were opened more by seeing on a daily basis how racism is very much alive and how they have different experiences with society than I have had . My daughter and husband are the world to me and so what affects them affects me...but I also realize that because I'm not black myself, I won't fully comprehend what they experience and feel. I also have realized that, like with many other things in life, everyday there's room for learning more- for learning about other people, about our own actions/outlooks and how we can change, about racism, about history and about how we can go about fighting racism...and really, so much more we can always learn! This book is a Young Reader's Edition but I have enjoyed reading it (and interested in the adult edition now). It has a Biblical approach to it and it's an easy read. I like that he weaves-in his own background and experiences as well as those of others. There are definitions of certain terms dispersed throughout the book and some Bible verses. It includes some questions of reflection. As well as a model he created as an approach to dealing with racism. I think anyone could benefit from this book!

This is an excellent and very well written book for children on how to handle racial injustice and be proactive in living in our current unsettling climate. This book is best for ages 10 and up, but I would say especially for ages 10 to 14. It can be read individually or with family or worked through in a group. There are great stories and examples from history and current times. There are great discussion questions and thoughtful questions for more thinking and processing. There great additional information at the back. I actually used this with my grown daughter and her son (my grandson) who is a mature 9 year old, and we had great conversations. I highly recommend this book.

I personally needed this book as I get bullied often for my race when I was little. My heart definitely have never healed from the trauma, so I wondered how this book could help. And let me tell you this book gave me such a great journey reading this book! It is well written and structured correctly! I loved all the distinctive and prominent people in this book! This book is also very educational and informative! This book is a great lesson for me, and definitely helped me out of my emotional trauma. I love how this book shows the importance of fighting for ourselves! Overall I am impressed and satisfied!! This is such a spell-binding and beautiful book!

This book is read through the lens of a young, black person. I read it ahead of supplying to my teenage nephews who are white.

First 1/4: in general, the white population is racist and you must be Christian to fight racism.

Second 1/4: snapshot of America’s racism, from foundations to current day. This section drew me in.

Then it reverts back to whites being racist by design. I haven’t been able to force myself to finish, but I’m trying. This book offers meaningful and useful information, but I believe there is better literature to coach us through fighting racism.

This is an excellent guide for children in the middle school age range or 8 to 12 year olds. The author writes from a Christian perspective though the principles certainly do not exclude secular circles. The author, a Black man, uses a framework called ARC which is an acronym for: Awareness, Relationships, Commitment. The book examines the history of racism and provides tools to fight it using the ARC framework as a guide. I like that each chapter has questions at the end for readers to consider. No photos or illustrations are included. Overall, it is an excellent guide for young people in the fight against racism.
