5.0 out of 5 starsEpic finale!
Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021
What an incredible adventure! From the beginning to end, the Shadow Beast trilogy has been a spellbinding magical thrill ride, an epic story with a breathtaking and emotional romance at its center and a magnificent heroine on the path to liberating self-actualization. I swooned, I laughed, and I shed tears of joy and pain as this fantastical crew of unlikely friends fight to restore the balance, to find their way back to each other, and to save the world and each other. Love, loss, heroism, and sacrifice- our final book in this quest lays everything on the line. Does it get anymore epic than that?

While this series is called Shadow Beast Shifters, this series, this world, is truly Mera’s. And my goodness, what a heroine. By far the most compelling heroine Jaymin Eve has ever scribed- which is saying a lot given all the powerful women she has in her arsenal. This is character writing at it’s finest- the way Jaymin has evolved this broken and lonely outsider and transformed her into a formidable leader. But Jaymin never changes the fabric of who Mera is- she’s still the quirky, feisty survivor we met back in Torma. The same curious, resilient, big hearted rejected mate we grew to love. Jaymin doesn’t change the core of her- rather she let’s Mera mature into herself, lean into the strengths and power and core of herself that she’s always possessed but never had the support or love to fully manifest. Jaymin doesn't change her- she UNLEASHES her, she lets her be reborn as her fullest self- the unrestrained, unstoppable, unforgettable Mera. The Mera whose uniqueness shines rather than isolates, a Mera who is the center rather than the reject. And what a site it is to behold.

Of course, we also have our quirky and enchanting cast of characters surrounding this journey. This unlikely team of creatures that are united by an unbreakable familial bond. And, we have the swooniest version of Shadow Beast yet, he's oozing his love for Mera and yearning for her. Mera’s new pack gives such a rich and tender nuance to this story- it gives us moments of levity and calm, of heartbreak and pain, of vulnerability and strength. Amidst the heart pounding fantasy and action, this family gives us heart and soul- the quiet, gentle, slow, but powerful notes in the doomsday symphony surrounding them.

That cliffhanger in Reclaimed was devastating, and Jaymin does not make it easy, or quick, for Mera and her friends to right the changes thrust upon them. But love- LOVE can not be denied. The love of her Shadow, the love of her friends, the love of her true pack. And that is what I love most about this series- how it comes full circle. Mera begins as an outsider in her own family, rejected, packless within her own pack, the thorn in their side. And over the course of this story, she finds her TRUE pack, no longer the outsider, no longer rejected, because Mera is the heart of her chosen family, she’s the center. And somehow the character who only wanted to be loved and to matter finds her way to a family that doesn’t just CHOOSE her, doesn’t just claim her, but they fight for her. The rejected wolf who was all alone makes a final stand surrounded by friends, by LOVE.

Jaymin Eve sure can weave a tale- the world building, the magic, the twists, the world-is-ending drama that all knit together to highlight the true essence of this story- LOVE. Love of all kinds- a love that empowers self, a love that inspires, a love that can perhaps even save you, that perhaps can save the world. “Right or wrong, you and I exist together….or we don’t exist at all.” And that is the greatest, most profound adventure of all- finding a love that speaks to the essence of your soul. A love that can somehow make you more human while also making you superhuman.

Shadow Beast Shifters is paranormal, romantic fantasy at it’s finest- because LOVE and connection, what make us the most human, the most vulnerable, end up being the most powerful magic of all. My heart is so fool- ALL THE FEELS for this heart stopping finale!

3.0 out of 5 starsAuthor clapback in the beginning?
Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2021
This third and final book had me feeling a little torn. As I started reading I got annoyed very quickly because I felt that the author self inserted herself in the book by talking about how cliffhangers can be good. This was a main critique of this series, all the cliffhangers. Why would Meera be reading and even able to finish a book in her state? So not a good start for me to be honest.

I felt that the beginning portion of the book was to drawn out. New bestie added for no reason and not really talked about to much other than set ut a new book. Didn't see the point of her beyond that.

I preferred the next part more with Shadow and Mera but again there were to many things that just screamed to me that it was setting up a sequel. It was a little heavy handed.

I did enjoy the battle because I enjoy action sequences. I wasn't to surprised by what happened but I did get sad about Angel since she was my favorite tragic character.

I feel like the book was divided into three sections. The Torma section, the getting everyone's memories back section and then the big battle section. I enjoyed the second and third one more but a lot things felt padded and could have been tightened up.

It had a cutesy ending that I liked. And thank you author for dropping the insane usage of dude.

Overall, this series to me is not one I would go back to reading. I don't regret going through it but it is not a series I would talk about to my friends and get them to buy. So i would sum up the series by giving it three stars.

Poor story, poor execution, childish writing style. I don't know how the books became progressively worse as they went on but they did. I don't know if the author got bored, stopped caring or decided she was going to change writing styles to match that of a 16 year old girls fanfic but this final book was a huge disappointment. It had its happy ending and wrapped everything up so at least she did that but I was really sick of following around a love struck, melodramatic, nymphomaniac MC in what ended up being a soap opera for 436 pages.

2.0 out of 5 stars The author has promise - the full series non spoilers review (mostly)

Like the title says, the author has promise. I started the first book to help escape some dark times I my life. I like crappy romance when I'm stressed. honestly? It wasn't good. I was ready to give up the series and go on with my life but the very last few chapters showed some promise.

I got book 2 to see if that glimmer of growth the author showed would stay and I wasn't exactly disappointed. Yes, she still goes off into rabid fangirl side bars on her own characters but it didn't have me cringing every chapter like the first.

Cliff hangers suck so I ordered book 3. There was lots of room for character twists and tough resolutions that would show growth but the author didn't seem to want to ruin any "happily ever afters." so we get dragged along a Mary Sue route with lots of fan service that seem more for the author than the reader. There are still some glimmers of brilliant writing in there if the author would just let the reader squee at their writing instead of doing it for us all the time.

I read this book because I started the first one and am a glutton for punishment. I skim read the first 1/2 skipped to about 84% and still had to skip a ton of content just to filet to the end. There was not one thing I liked about this book.

The story got lost with nothing but porn. Had to skip chapters just to get back to the story. I was just glad to finish the book. It's a shame to because the first to books were good.

Malika
2.0 out of 5 stars More juvenile than adult, aside from the sex scenes
Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021
Ultimately, this book is a less than satisfying conclusion to the Mera-Shadow arc of this series. The writing is not particularly good or sophisticated compared to others in the genre which definitely impacts my rating.

The book starts out with the author specifically talking about how great cliffhangers are. It doesn't fit the plot or what's going on at all, and clearly was just that the author wanted to give a justification for her inability to end a book without a cliffhanger. Ultimately, I don't think that authors should directly try to talk down to their audience, and it's a move that puts the author's ego before the story. I really hated the ending of book 2 given that it seemed so unnecessary and set the plot back instead of moving the story forward. On top of that, authors should stand by their work. It would feel weird if George R. R. Martin snuck in a paragraph justifying the red wedding because it was based on a historical event. Good authors don't need to flip off their readers and act like they're so proud of themselves.

This book starts with Mera back with her pack with no memory. She acts erratically, with basically everyone sucking up to her and her "mate" alternating between trying to convince her to be with him and attempting to force her physically, which she literally just walks away from, yet at another point she randomly knees him in the groin as though behaving erratically is being strong.

The biggest thing that bugs me about this series is that Mera (and her relationship with Shadow) is very juvenile. She is very clearly written as a Mary-Sue - the book describes her as sooo smart and talented and has such special magic but the only positive qualities that she displays are loyalty and persistence. She makes bad decisions, other characters have to tell her obvious things that she throws a tantrum over, and then when it's a key moment against the big bad then suddenly she is the strongest and most magical being ever.

Everything about Mera's behavior is juvenile: she refers to the library as "my" library constantly despite the fact that it was around for centuries before her. She calls the two people closest to her Angel and Shadow, despite those not being their names and being surface qualities. I'm surprised she doesn't call the Vampire Fangs.

Her relationship with Shadow has no depth - it honestly is written like a 12 year old dreaming of her first love. It's all "I'd die for you" and "my race only kisses their true mates so kissing is so speshul" and specifically pointing out that she was a virgin until Shadow yet she's obsessed with vibrators and brings them up constantly. It leaves the relationship feeling weak and juvenile. There's a lot of sex in this book but it's all so boring. Nothing steamy about it. Mera and Shadow's relationship are based on...similar types of magic, both like the library, both like sex....and that's it?

The author continues to obsessively call Mera and Shadow "Shadowshine" as a couple name. It's obvious that she wants this to be a fandom and be a "THING" but it reinforces the "middle school soul mates" feel of the relationship. If Brad and Angelina started introducing themselves as Brangelina, you'd roll your eyes at them. It's like someone trying to give themselves a nickname.

The plot of this book is just in a really weird place, it's half fixing the bad ending of the last book and half prepping for at least three other characters to get their own spinoffs. There's a female best friend added to this book who clearly is only brought in as pre-spinoff material, she disappears 1/3 of the way through the book. All of Shadow's entourage shows up to fight in this one, and it specifically brings up how they're all a pack now including Mera, and they have each others' backs....so WHY DIDN'T THEY GO WITH SHADOW AND MERA THE FIRST TIME? It wasn't that important the first time, even though he'd been prepping for the fight for centuries? There are still numerous members of Shadow's entourage that are effectively interchangeable or who don't have a clear personality, partially because the entourage is so large. One of them Mera literally refers to as Shadow #2.

Good authors tend to have a point for everything they include in a story, and Jaymin just doesn't do this. This adds to the juvenile feel of the book and the characters. Before they left for an important task, Mera made a point of using the restroom and it starts talking about how some immortals need bathrooms. It's an aside that isn't funny, it doesn't add anything, and realistically it should have been cut in editing. There are numerous feasts but they don't seem to have focus. There's things in them that are worth leaving in but there's other times that it just feels like "oh, this is the super delicious food in the super cool cafeteria scene." The random BS that gets added that add nothing to this story, aren't comic relief, tell you nothing about the characters are part of why I'm giving this such a low rating. This book just isn't as good as a lot of the other books in this genre and it's a joke to imply otherwise. Not every book is a five star book and this book lacks the focus and refinement to be anywhere near 5 stars.

Like many series in this genre, the three books were not necessary...could have been one or two. Plotline drags due to unnecessary scenes/descriptions and writing is extremely repetitive. The second and third books are so repetitive, I skipped whole pages - not missing anything important.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021
This is hard for me bc I loved the first two books. I had high hopes for this one even with the lame cliff hanger at the end of book two. Those hopes were never realized. I was bored and annoyed nearly the entire time. I ended up skimming a lot of pages. This book didn’t have the same magic.. it didn’t have the same romance. It was mostly rough sex and terrible dialogue. I never had a problem with Mera’s personality (even tho sometimes she was annoying) until this book. Perhaps my hopes were just too high.
