5.0 out of 5 starsShades of "From A High Tower"
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2022
A Wild West show touring Germany? A female sharpshooter headlining that show? She's an elemental magician? Another female elemental magician joins the show in order to teach her? A Big Bad from her past shows up and she has to confront/overcome him? No, this isn't "From A High Tower"; it's a reworked version called "The Silver Bullets of Annie Oakley". If you haven't read the earlier book, this one is just fine. It's sort of High Tower lite; not quite the depth and range, but a perfectly pleasant light reading experience, containing a dash of "Blood Red" for extra spice. The characters are lovely people and I believe I would happily read a book detailing their further adventures...as long as there is an original plot attached!
I have been a fan of Mercedes Lackey since she published Arrows of the Queen in the 80s. I've always been impressed by her abilities and prolific works, her RANGE of stories and her many projects and cowriters. However, in the last 10 years or more, I've read fewer and fewer of her books. Many of the cowritten ones just aren't to my taste and some of the Elemental Magicians books have leaned heavily on exploring the minds of the evil antagonists, which I don't enjoy AT ALL. Silver Bullets at least refrains from that but leans so heavily on those two previous plots that I would find myself asking, "Why didn't she include x, y, and z? Those would make this so much better!" I'm going to
go reread "Blood Red" and "From a High Tower" now. If you haven't read those two, I certainly recommend reading this book first. If you HAVE read them, they will surely be on your mind while you read "The Silver Bullets of Annie Oakley"!

While not one of the better books in the series its certainly not the worst. It does tread over old ground In showing us an air magician learning the ropes and performing In a circus not unlike From a High Tower. It also has a very bad case of chekov's gun, establishing the villain within the first few pages of the story and then not bringing the villain back until the last few pages of the book. The description is also wrong when it stated that a woman named Giselle would be teaching Annie Oakley how to use magic. Instead an entirely different woman from Giselle of From a High Tower teaches Annie. However there are several unique action scenes that are handled In ways different from other protagonists, as well as Annie's own conflict in becoming both a magician and a hunter of evil. Overall I would say this book was unnecessary but not worthless. If you are reading the books In sequence it is a nice change of pace from the stories involving Nan and Sarah and Gives a different perspective of a learning mage similar to Jolene. However if you waited a year to purchase this book after reading Jolene or expected a return of Giselle and Rosa from From a High Tower, you will most likely be disappointed. This book Is essentially a retelling of From a High Tower and i would suggest re reading that story instead of purchasing this one if you are a long time fan of Elemental Masters like myself

3.0 out of 5 stars Mercedes Lackey is my safe space and happy place, but…

I wanted to love this book. I was looking forward to it for almost a year. It had potential, but it ended up being more about logistics than the actual story and magic. In the end, there was more palaver about a heating pan for the bed than the supposed climax of the story. All of the interesting bits with magic and the show were off-screen, so to speak. What we got instead was a lot of logistics and eating and feeling cold. It felt like the soul had been sucked out of it and what was left behind was bloodless and rather ghastly. I feel like the author has big plans for it, but lost her energy and just finished it instead of breathing life into it. (And her last release was typically excellent, so obviously it’s not an ongoing issue.) I love Mercedes Lackey and her books are a safe place and a haven for me. This one wasn’t great, but I will be ready when the next one comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Realistic Fantasy

Historically accurate fantasy written with great attention to detail. The Wild West show run by Buffalo Bill was amazing in its popularity and quite as described in this book. The Hunters and other fairy assisted characters sound nearly as believable. With her usual flare for adventure and drama, Mercedes Lackey does not disappoint!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes you can have apfelkuchen for breakfast

This is similar to From a High Tower but it's still a good story and I enjoyed it. Being raised in a German American family, I love the food in the books set in central Europe. It's presented accurately. This book did kick me into making apfelkuchen again, my favorite version is versunken apfelkuchen. It's easy to make and very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars almost superfluous. Mercedes Lackey always 5 star

Yet another outstanding and enjoyable read in this series.
I have yet, and I believe I have read her complete works, to read anything that wasn’t 5 star, and that is true only because no 6 star ratings 😀.
Her work is soothing to the soul, and world view expanding as well as fun to reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was sceptical, but...

I was admittedly sceptical about so many real people in a fantasy, but leave it to Mercedes Lackey to make it not just work, but wishing for more. I had beard the details of camp break down and assembly before, but it fit well in the story, as did history of Belgium, Prussia, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful story

I very much enjoyed this book. It reminded of the stories of Annie Oakley I read as a child and “Annie Get Your Gun” and what I read about the Wild West Shows, too. I loved them all and I like this book better. I hope there’s more to be written of this story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but Strangely off.

I enjoyed the story. Mercedes Lackey is as good as ever at putting it together and I am quite happy at it not being another Sherlock knock off. Those were getting repetitive.
However what I was expecting was the same world as "From a High Tower" and it was ish. Sure the Hunt Masters are there, and Giselle is there if you squint hard enough but it feels like Ms. Lackey forgot her own character back story. It was so close. Meaning their was apparently a 2nd Blond German Air Master Women running around playing sharpshooter and allied with the Hunters. At the same time, roughly, as "From a High Tower"
Disappointing. I do love the world, but I also love the characters. And she seems to have left them all behind. Maybe I missed how serious a time jump it was, but pretty sure they mention competing with Buffalo Bill in "From a High Tower"

Annie Oakley has been one of my heroines since my childhood. I have read and reread numerous Mercedes Lackey novels over the years. This conjunction of two favorites worked out very, very well. I hope there's a sequel!
