5.0 out of 5 starsExceptional Character Driven Story that makes this a real standout!!
Reviewed in the United States šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø on September 25, 2021
Sentenced to War tells the story of Reverent R Pelletier, known to most as just ā€˜Rev’, a young man of 17yrs who has his whole future ahead of him. He has a job already set out for him in his Step-Fathers guild, the Benevolent Order of Crystal Technicians. However, one afternoon, he stupidly tries to impress his girlfriend, and gets into a fight, and whilst he doesn’t get caught for fighting, he does get stopped when trying to flee the scene.
This story is set in a futuristic, dystopian universe, one in which humanity has settled many worlds, having moved off of Earth, and technology has also changed significantly. In this universe, Humanity is struggling in a war against a superior Alien race called the Centaur, and for this reason, anyone caught breaking the law is generally punished by a term of conscription in the Union Marine Corps.
Initially Rev believes that he will be fine on several different aspects, his offence is only a class 13 offence, and these are not on the Conscription list, he is only 17, and therefore can’t be conscripted, and, he has a job lined up in an organisation that is important to the war effort. Unfortunately, things don’t go Rev’s way. (Otherwise this would have been a very short story, and the cover would have made no sense!)
Rev is sentenced to the Pegasus Union Marine Corp, and finds that he has a couple of options open to him, some that leave him a Grunt for over 20yrs of service, but not in the line of fire, or, the option of DC – Direct Combat, and only 3yrs of Service, if you live of course, but the survival rate is not very high.
Rev of course takes the DC route, hoping he will not only survive the training (otherwise it’s back to the long route home and 20+yrs as a Grunt), but more to the point, survives the next several years as a Marine.
It is here that I should really point out that the story, the writing and the Characters are just exceptional. There are hundreds of books in which a young guy gets dragged into military service, and goes off to war, so if you are going to write one, you have to make it stand out, and worth reading, and that is exactly what Brazee and Chaney have done.
The Characters are incredibly real, the young, headstrong man that Rev is. The initial fight scene, in which he knew it was wrong, but also knew he would lose his girl if he didn’t stick up for her, the entire situation was so realistic, even the flow-on after. Rev then thinks he will be ok, until the Judge does otherwise, because that is how court goes – and having been a Cop who has worked in the courts, I have seen very similar situations happen (Literally teenagers going to jail for stupid things because a Judge is on a crusade). But Rev also knows he made a mistake, and he has to fix it. The processing in the Marines, the initial meeting of each of the other recruits, is all so real (Seriously, flashbacks to academy days!!) The dialogue, interactions and interplay between each of the characters is brilliant.
I don’t want to extend too far into the story, or give too much away, but needless to say, this story continues on with a phase of training, before they are moved out into the universe, and live operations.
During this time, Rev meets a group of Recruits and that group make a pact to get together at the end of their term.
Some of them are with Rev in his team, one in particular becomes Rev’s best friend in a way, Tomiko Reiser.
As a part of their training, they are augmented, upgraded, (I’ll let you read about that, don’t want to spoil the fun), but one aspect of it, is they get an A.I. implanted in their heads, and this provides for some hilarious interactions.
Initially, Rev is reluctant to use it, and the Marine can actually set the level of ā€˜Intelligence’ the AI has, as in it only operates at 20% capacity etc.
Rev and his AI have an amusing relationship, and when it starts to tell him jokes (OMG, the jokes are a mixture of ā€˜Dad’ jokes, and others that if you are listening to this in public, you will embarrass yourself when you laugh out loud). Overall this book has a wicked sense of humour, and it really adds an extra dimension to the story. I will say that it is not an overbearing or continuous stream of humour like some Mil Sci-Fi stories have chosen to go with, it is a more ā€˜discrete’ humour, but the points it happens you will be on the floor in tears.
The other side of that, is that this is a powerfully emotive story, one in which none of the main characters are safe. The Authors have no problem with killing any of their characters (or maiming them), and you will be reading/listening along, when you have to stop and go back to make sure you heard/read right, that a particular favourite character was just eliminated by enemy fire.
The combat scenes in this book are nothing short of brutal, chaotic, and viciously realistic. They have been written by someone that knows the utter adrenaline fueled fear, chaos, elation, terror, at times hope, and at other times despair of combat.
Whilst I have not been in military combat, I have been in the middle of riots, and had to fight for my life on a couple of occasions when I was in the Police, and can in some small way, empathise with the situation, and the scenes in these books are breathtaking in their realism, totally engaging, you won’t be able to put them down.
As well as the extraordinary combat scenes, there has been remarkable effort put into the world building as well, with each of the different locations that Rev and his crew go to being described with such brilliant detail, and fantastic depth, really bring them to life so that as they are moving through these places, you feel like you can see them, you get to look through their eyes, and visualise the worlds they see, as well as the enemies they are hunting, and on occasions, the people they meet, those that they may be trying to save. The world building in this story is just masterful.
This book has so many fantastic things that really set it apart from the others in the same genre. The combat scenes are an obvious given, they are just outstanding. But the thing that really makes this book worth reading, is the incredibly powerful Character Driven Story, because the Character work in this book is absolutely sensational, and makes this series a true standout.
I have already finished Book 2, and I am about to start Book 3, the series just keeps getting better, and the Character Building only gets stronger, in what is a gritty, emotive and powerful story. This is one series that should NOT be missed!!

Book 1 had errors throughout and was an okay read. The MC ends up drafted and become an augmented soldier. He must remain in service for about 3 yrs and then he will go home. He struggles with his augments and AI in his head. The story is not as exciting as I'd hoped and drags in places. He complains so much it takes away from the overall story. Not sure if I'll read book 2.

Lots of light fun, very reminiscent of youth oriented Robert Heinlein books. I will be checking out at least the next in the series.

Sentenced to War by Jonathan R. Branzee and J. N. Chaney, (Book one of the Sentenced to War series)
This is the coming-of-age story of "Rev" who is sentenced to serve in the military for a minor traffic violation, hence the book title. It takes place far in the future when man has scattered among many planets in the galaxy. There is a war, of course, between humans and an implacable alien race called "Centaurs." Earth is now mostly a nature preserve, but it, too, is under threat along with all human civilization, and things are not going well. Rev, properly known as Reverent Pelletier, is drafted, enslaved really, into the Pegasus Union Marine Corps. He chooses to serve in direct combat, which is only a three-year commitment, but the chances of survival are depressingly poor...... So begins the story of his training and later combat on several worlds. Can he survive? That is question number one.
What I Liked:
This is well-written novel. The authors are able to build a convincing world/universe that feels real. The dialogue sounds natural. The technology is sufficiently advanced to fit a time in the distant future. The combat sequences are exciting, and the ending give closure. This is a complete story with no cliffhanger, which is somewhat unusual in a series book, but is much appreciated by readers. Editing is good. There was no graphic sex; just some sexual banter.
What I Did Not Like:
A strange thing was the title "Sentenced to War>" It is not incorrect, but I had thought that the novel was going to have a heavy focus on the injustice in Rev's society. But the injustice of his penal sentence was only incidental to the plot. I would say it was more surprising than an element that I did not like, but still. There are numerous examples of four-letter words, including F" bombs. I could have done without that, but it did not happen on every page. There is a lot of violence and death, so it is not for the faint-hearted. Except for Rev, himself, most of the characters are not given much depth.
Conclusions:
My quibbles aside, I found this an entertaining read. Of course, I like this genre. I think it deserves at least four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid sci fi military novel
Reviewed in the United States šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø on July 24, 2022

I'll get to the negative right away. Too many names to keep track of. I know the reason for it is to have enough people to lose for the action to really matter. Other than the early team, I kept on losing track of who the names were and how they related. It really bugged me so that's why no 5 stars.

Other than that it's a solid story and Rev is a good protagonist and the action scenes are well done. I do look forward to seeing Rev develop in the military as it's trying to screw him over. The cover picture is a little misleading. At no point was that a visual, but it does well to connect the eye to the book. We often times as readers judge attempting to read a novel by the cover. Great cover art. When it comes to military sci fi, I judge based off the best and that is David Weber. It's not on the same level of complexity this story but really good and solid. I would recommend it, but it's not a stay up all night to finish kind of hook.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good

This book is conventional in all aspects. What makes it exceptionally good is how well it is written and organized. The storyline follows a high school kid who is forced into the Marines in a totally unjust way. He is involved in a traffic offense but the government has made new regulations that sentence any offender to serve a long term in the forces. Harsh indeed but Humanity is in a deadly serious, wide-ranging war with an alien species and needs lots of troops. That explains the title.
We go with the young man through boot camp, to suffer with him as his augments are installed and painfully come into a useful level of familiarity. Then comes some battles with the enemy.
The pacing is good, an important item. We get information, we get a development of the characters to interest us. We do have enough info about the characters, especially the central young convict, to care if they survive or not.
This is an extra good example of the same old tale. It is set many centuries in the future.
I will be reading more of this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page-turning coming of age story with just enough tech and terrible aliens
Reviewed in the United States šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø on June 2, 2021

Sentenced to War by J.N. Chaney and Jonathan P. Brazee is a page-turning coming of age story that I made the mistake of starting at 10pm. When I got to the last page at 3am, I immediately checked to see if the next book was available. The next TWO are available, glory be. (It doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, it’s just that good.)

I love military scifi and coming of age stories, and found Sentenced to War a good mix of the two. Our main character, hopped up on hormones, gets himself sentenced to a stint in the military as a conscript. Humanity is at war with technologically advanced aliens. It isn’t going well, and we need more cannon fodder, which is why even a traffic ticket gets you drafted for a term of service.

Aspects of this story reminded me favorably of Old Man’s War by John Scalzi, and Orphanage by Robert Buettner. While it does follow a ā€œformulaā€ in which our character goes through boot camp, training, battles, etc, it never becomes formulaic. I had no idea what was going to happen next, and there was never a TSTL moment.

I like Rev Pelletier, our main character, who is a believable product of his culture and upbringing. He’s got good bones, as they say, if only he can grow up before he gets blown up.

I’m not former military, and I don’t care about tables of organization, rank, proper military speak, and so on. I’m also happy to assume that in the far future, when humanity has spread out to multiple new planets with hundreds of billions of us floating around in multiple military organizations, that rank and structure will have changed. So I ignored the reviewers who railed against those things.

The technology was explained well enough I got the idea without ever descending to complete geek-speak and trumping character. At its heart, Sentenced to War is about a good guy learning how to make tough decisions and finding the place he belongs.

4.0 out of 5 stars More military-focused than sci-fi-focused

The story has enough action and character development to maintain reader interest. However, there is a lot of military life detail that over-balances the adventure aspect of the book. For someone who is not associated with the military, the mundane details and jargon blur a bit until the action happens. While the action scenes against the aliens are detailed and suspenseful, they are frustrating because they are limited by the protagonist’s limited POV. What he doesn’t know, the reader doesn’t know. Who are the aliens? What do they want? Shrug.

The limited POV does add suspense to the plot because Rev learns as he goes and so does the reader. BUT, like a low-ranking grunt, my guess is it will be a slow slog until big reveals happen.

I am not so in Love with Rev or his battle buddy to be compelled to HAVE to read to find out what happens next. Their personal stakes are just too low at the end of book one to draw me further into the series. Rev just seems to blow along where fate takes him without much personal ambition. This is rather boring for me and makes the book seem more like an impersonal video game than a highly engaging hero on a personal quest. Rev is likable and has a lot of good qualities, but his lack of thinking/use of wit is annoying. I’d rather he was clever instead of surviving due to dumb-luck.
