This book is a fantastic quick read for an adult or a fun nightly story for kids. I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. It has 58 chapters but most are pretty short. So if you’re planning on doing a chapter a night until Christmas, get it soon!

I think Rowling “peaked” with Harry Potter. I bought this book in hopes of gifting it to my granddaughter but the first few chapters were about a young boy in a broken marriage and his mother hooks up with another divorced man with a teenage rebellious daughter. Don’t feel this is an appropriate book for a child.

So bummed. Started reading this to my 9, 6 and 4 year olds. First few chapters the parents are screaming at each other and the dad walks out. The mom starts dating a man with his own daughter. I understand there are real families like these (my own childhood) but I think elementary is too young to be thinking this is normal. Maybe middle school or high school age.

If you love "The Velveteen Rabbit," buy that instead of this. If you love "Toy Story," buy that instead of this. This is a cross between the two, but does not have the beauty and richness of the first one, and misses the humor and childlike faith and love of the second. This is twaddle, which I am sure will be made into a animated film. Hopefully they will get a better script writer for it. This is written at a 3rd to 4th grade level, without the rich vocab you would expect from Rowling. I would say it's written for k-2nd graders, but the scary parts are harsh. Buy the Velveteen Rabbit instead.

As others have mentioned, by page five the little boy wakes to the parents screaming and the dad moves out. It happens that quickly. Not only is divorce glossed over as no big deal, the material is a bit much for a young child. I will not be giving it to my grandson for Christmas.

Nearly 20 years of buying books on Amazon and this is my first book review. I am compelled to tell other parents to steer clear of this one. Book starts with parents arguing and breaking things which leaves mom in tears and dad walks out. The next 5 chapters are equally inappropriate for young children. As I continued reading (skipping many pages altogether) I kept referring to the flap to make sure I picked the right book about an adventure between a boy and his stuffed pig. Maybe it gets there but we are not. So disappointed with this purchase.
