Scorpion is the second book in Piper Stone’s Montana Bad Boys series. In this book, readers are introduced to two dynamic lead characters—Caroline Walker and Cooper “Scorpion” McKenzie. The lead characters are strong-willed, determined, and emotionally wounded. She, a former country western singer, arrives in town to help Jasper, Scorpion’s uncle, upgrade his bar. He, a former Marine, returns home to settle his uncle’s estate. Both lead characters are emotionally wounded. She cannot get over the betrayal of her ex-boyfriend. He cannot get over the guilt he feels over the death of his best friend, Snake. Their emotional pain blinds them to possibility of finding a soulmate. Will they find happiness? What will their journey be like? You must read this book, to discover their journey.
I enjoyed this well-written romantic suspense. Ms. Stone cleverly uses a two-prong plot. One prong is their romantic journey. The second prong is one of suspense and mystery. It follows Caroline and Scorpions quest to discover the truth behind malicious events designed to force him to liquidate his uncle’s estate. I appreciated the rich conversational and internal dialog revealing Caroline and Scorpion’s backstories. I liked the use of a dual point of view to illuminate their dreams and vulnerabilities. Lastly, Ms. Stone’s use of descriptive language paints vivid and memorable scenes. One memorable scene showcases the barn burning and Caroline fighting the smoke and flames to save the trapped horses. This scene pulls readers into the scene giving them an eye-witness view. This was a captivating read. Well done, Ms. Stone.
