How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsbeginning was confusing

I was incredibly confused while reading this book. It’s the first book of a series and the entire story kept referencing things and people that had previously happened. Characters are brought into the story as if I should be aware of who they are and their back story. I actually went back to Amazon to see if there was a novella that introduced the main character and the original story line As mysteries go I found it a bit strange. The ending had more of a soap opera finale than a cozy mystery. Btw this is the first cozy mystery I’ve read where the main character uses profanity. I also found her to be a bit of a bully. I hope the next book in the series is better.

I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t even get through the first chapter. It wasn’t just a few mistakes here and there, some sentences were nearly unintelligible.

Entertaining and well written though the language is not that of the 1920s. A fast fun read though. Have fun!

There is little rest once the reader has begun to enter the rabbit hole created by Anrea Hicks. From the first chapter, the reader has the opportunity to experience the various situations of the classes, genders, and values of life after the effects WWI. So many are struggling with lose, with returning to a life, with the struggles of scratching for a living. Also struggling are the women who stayed home to maintain a life in a country torn apart from lose of male workers, of wanting to have a voice, of having the knowledge that they are of no more consequence than being the same value as a pair of boots to a man. Add a series of horrendous murders of women of wealthy families, a missing lady's maid, and lettered threats aplenty and you've got a very good read.

I enjoyed the story. The only problem was the story's need for better proof reading. There were misspellings in some of the characters' names and mixing up of the characters in chapters making it difficult to follow the story. This mainly occurred in the last third of the book.
I'm hoping book 2 has the bugs ironed out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Read about half, no desire to finish.

Characters weren’t really compelling, felt like there should have been a book before this (based on a bunch of random characters that were never really properly introduced and just kind of showed up like they were already supposed to be known) but there didn’t seem to be? Fat-shaming, some really horrible characters (not the villains or anything, just genuinely unpleasant supporting characters) - this was (based on the portion I read) almost the antithesis of the cozy mystery concept.

I'm always trying new (to me) authors. This period book set in post WW1 England didn't disappoint. It is both well crafted and highly entertaining. I have high hopes for the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good book - don’t read it…

…unless you like or don’t mind coming in in the middle of a story! Camille Divine, the heroine, apparently began life in the last book of the 99 Nightingale Lane Series – ‘The Hotel’. It is obvious that you are not in at the beginning, but it is not until the end that you find out where it all started - with a Carrie Dobbs - who may have appeared in this book, but with a rich cast, including Camille and a Cecily, I can’t be sure. Anyway, the author would like you to read the previous series, which I may have done had I realised prior to starting this one. Might I suggest that this information is put in the start of the book? Not all of us read the blurb (if it’s in there?!). This is quite a good murder mystery, set at the time when women’s suffrage was still a hot topic. The female sleuth is quite good and it looks as if she will have the obligatory police boyf. I’ll read at least one more before deciding whether the previous series is wanted or needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely read

A really lovely book set in the 1920's. Camille and her maid plus other acquaintances have the murders of three women and a horse to help the police with. Then there is also a missing ladies maid to be found. Camille has a few obstacles to get past including men who think they know best. I really enjoyed reading this book.
