Peter Brandvold – Yakima Henry Bk 5 – The Savage Breed – Reviewed 6/17/21 – Read 6/7/21
Trying to put the past behind him, Yakima came back to his horse ranch in Arizona to find a little closure, and to bring Faith home, after all, it was their home! He couldn’t bring her body, but he could mark the spot with rocks next to her brother. This would give her a free spirit to be with him. Heading into Saber Creek he makes camp not far from the ranch, but the next morning four bushwhackers jump him. They knocked him out taking his horse, guns, boots, and worst of all it was thirty miles to the closest town. Being mad at himself for letting someone get the one up on him, Yakima takes off after them. Tracking them led him straight to Saber Creek, first stop was the livery to check on Wolf, finding him and his gear he put on his boots and headed for the saloon. Well, what do you know, my new scumbag friends are all sitting at a table in the back playing cards, and he spotted his prized Yellow Boy leaning against the table! After he dispatched all of them, he headed upstairs to wait for the Marshall, taking Angelina over his shoulder with him.
After drinking and cavorting almost all night, he wakes to the sound of metal clanking against metal, forcing one eye open he sees a pair of metal bracelets hanging in front of him, looking further he sees the sour look of the Marshall’s face behind them. His old buddy, well maybe not buddy, but the guy that has thrown him into a cell more times than he can count, told him to get his clothes on and head for his home away from home, jailcell! Yakima told him that he was just retrieving his possessions and that they were horse thieves. Didn’t make any difference, he was going to be locked up, no matter what! Course, what Yakima did not know at the time was that the man that had sent the bushwhackers after Yakima was also in jail.
Join Yakima when he learns the truth and the reason for his latest problems…
What did I like? Said it once and I will say it again, “No matter what this boy does, trouble follows him like a homing pigeon!” I think the one thing that stands out about the character of Yakima is the fact that he just can’t help himself. He has to help someone that needs it. His heritage is another thing that I admire about him. He was raised, to love and respect mother earth and he does always. Now, after the death of Faith, the woman that he loved with every part of his soul, my heart just breaks for him. It will be exciting to see what Peter does with him next.
What will you like? Excitement, action, gunplay, old friends, and new adventures are just a sample of the escapades that you will find as you read this. Peter shows us again another trip into the wilds of Mexico, the banditos, old friends, and more trouble for our boy, Yakima. As we all know from other books, Peter will wave his magic pen (well actually his laptop) and bring his storyline to life with a flick of his finger. The descriptions will touch your imagination and the characters will loom large in your mind’s eye, showing us the newest exploits for Yakima Henry. It will keep you up at night with nary a thought of sleep till the last pages turn. Another excellent read from Peter Brandvold in the Yakima Henry series, Available June 22, 2021.
