Well worth the price

I had to give this series only 4*. Did I like it? Yes I read the whole series word for word. But it is kind of corny in the old Flash Gordon style. This would be great for children's start in the SciFi genre. Violence is there but subdued somewhat like the first Star Wars. The hero is more like a Flash Gordon, wishful, clumsy and try anything to win. The bad guys, the political leaders and military top brass on both sides, Corruption! The common man on both sides, live and let live if the bad guys told the truth. I can't recommend it to the avid Space Opera reader but highly recommend it (5*) to those that want something lighter. It was hard to put down, but I'm of the old non CGI movie watchers.

How bad is it? Let me count the ways

Our hero gets into the most outlandish situations, and gets out of them in the most outlandish ways. Names are frequently misspelled (meaning they are spelled one way, and then another). Things needed to get out of a situation almost magically appear (like a secret passage in a three times destroyed spaceship). Fortune keeps reversing itself, and nobody can be trusted. Gadgets left someplace suddenly reappear for no good reason. It wasn't even needed. Others seem to just get lost as if irrelevant to the story (like two boxes of crystal skulls). The childish motives are repeatedly explained in the most unbelievable way. There is regularly unbelievable escapes at the last minute for our hero although not necessarily everyone else. My problem now is that the story doesn't end. I've invested effort in reading this drivel, and I'd like to stop, but I'd also like to know what constitutes an ending. Do humans achieve their destiny or are they going to keep on struggling against the invaders.

Good beginning, ending...?

The storyline is solid for the first books. As I read the last book the editing became worse and worse. It was tough to read around the many errors in the last book. It was as if no one edited the final book. Shame.

The general theme of the books is interesting and could be a great read. Unfortunately the non stop action is quite literally that, to the point of ridiculousness and tedium and just becomes a constant and unrealistic slog. Lurching from one crisis to another immediately after it becomes so relentless after a while you find yourself skimming through it for some relief. Maybe some readers like this sort of thing but for me something more holistic and rounded is far more engaging.
