How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

Miss W Book Reviews
5.0 out of 5 starsFantastic Mystery!
Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021
Plymouth Undercover is a fantastic new mystery from Pamela Kelley. I love this author's women fiction books and I am a huge mystery fan so I knew I would love this book, but WOW! I REALLY loved it!!

After her father's death, Emma and her mom inherit Court Street Investigations a popular Private Investigation firm in Plymouth, Mass. With the help of a 80 year YOUNG retried detective they had it all under control for your basic cheating spouses, fraudulent workmen comp cases.

They were not expecting to be hired to locate a missing person which ended up being a murder investigation.

Having been to Plymouth, the descriptions were spot on and added such a small town feel element to this mystery. The description of the food alone made me hungry.

The characters were well developed and fleshed out .

But the mystery stole the show. I really loved how little clues were dropped at a perfect pace.

Sit back, follow the clues and enjoy a fantastic Mystery . Here is hoping another book in this series is coming.

I cannot recommend this book enough!

Love to Read
1.0 out of 5 starsVery disappointed in this book
Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2021
I've read several of this author's books and have enjoyed them. This book, however, was a huge fail. I was sure as I was reading it that it must have been her first book, so was surprised to learn it was actually one of her latest. Not only was the story very weak, but the editing of the book was just awful. Lots of typos, words left out, horrible punctuation. I was so tired of reading "So," that I almost quit halfway through. I know she is capable of better writing. I would highly suggest having someone re-edit this book to at least take care of those things. The story is still very weak and totally unbelievable, but at least it wouldn't hurt to read it.

Sadly sloppy. The day of the murder switches from Wednesday to Thursday partway through so the detectives check some alibis for one day and some for another. Visits to restaurants seem to take precedence over plotting the mystery.

Wasn't her typical story. I did not enjoy as much as her other books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Well, I finished it.

Bought this book because it looked like an interesting premise. Unfortunately it reads as if the author used a Google map of Plymouth MA and YELP restaurant reviews for most of her action. Some of her geography was wrong, she situated something at exit 5 when it is in actuality at exit 7. If you are going to write as if you know the area, get it right. ( By the way, the DOT has renumbered the exits) I wonder if all the restaurants she mentions paid her for the advertising. She missed Waterfront Grill, Tavern on the Wharf, Rye Tavern, Dillon's Local, KKaties Burger Bar and the 1620 Wine Bar among others. The murder mystery was interesting and the denouement was satisfying. I think I liked the mother's character the best. Basically a bit too saccharine a main character for my taste.

Plymouth Undercover wanted to be a good story. Had a great plot, but just does not live up to its potential. The characters are pretty shallow and incredible. A wannabe actress chucks her “dream” to come back and take over running her father’s private investigation firm? She and her mother/partner immediately take on a missing persons cum murder case? No experience, no license – except for an 80-year-old employee (not partner, manager or owner of the company). It begs credulity.

Every step taken, sight seen, thought… thought is spelled out in full detail plus, with an over the top obsession with food. Details in a story help develop the characters or move the story forward, when there is a point to them. But when the “point” feels like the detail is merely to stretch the word count far enough to qualify as a novel rather than a short story, it is too much. That is the case here.

The main character makes no sense at all. She is more interested in menus and who is eating what or wearing which designer than in being a detective.

In all, it was not a pleasant story. Felt like something written by a young high school kid for a short story assignment that only garnered a C.

2.0 out of 5 stars Reads like a string of Yelp reviews for Plymouth restaurants
Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2021
This is definitely a fast beach read, but it is far from a page turner. All the glowing reviews had me expecting an engaging mystery with a touch of local Plymouth scenery. Instead, it reads like a pre-teen mystery where the female detective travels around town following clues. There really isn’t much action, but any action that exists is slowed down by the amount of time spent describing the menus of Plymouth restaurants (could they be sponsors of the book?) or references to designer brands. It was nice to encounter a title about Plymouth that isn’t historical fiction, but I can only recommend this for filling a couple hours while you’re on a short flight.

I liked the characters in this book but the story lacked substance. Too much time was spent on what they ate and drank. However, if you could turn it into a weekly tv show I would watch it. Picture this as a one hour tv episode: a mother daughter detective agency, 80 yr old detective (Morgan Freeman if he is available) hot cop as mom's love interest, daughter is a former actor . she could play various roles while solving crimes...Maybe Demi Moore and one of her daughters could star.
Thanks to Goodreads for the free e-book.
