Delilah
5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent urban fantasy from a reliably enjoyable author
Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2020
Like all BR Kingsolver books, the heroine is smart, interesting, talented, yet avoids the Mary Sue trope that so many urban fantasy heroines fall victim too.
The lead character, Danica, is a cop from one of the ten chief families on an Earth that has had nuclear war, a demon invasion, vampires- yet still manages to be familiar.
The characters are interesting, the story engaging. While it’s not left on a cliffhanger, it is definitely left with a sense that the sequel is going to be incredible.
Mostly romance free not because the main character is anti romance, but just because it’s definitely not the time and place.

Honestly? The writing was not bad. My rating had little to do with that. My issue is with the way the author normalized minors having sex with 40+ adults. I should have stopped reading at that point, but I kept going because, as I mentioned, the writing was not bad.
I understand in any well-written or even remotely thought-out crime book, there will be uncomfortable elements - after all, bad crimes in general often go against the norm. However the detective not only finding out about what is legally sexual assault and not reporting it or even seemingly remotely concerned about it led me to this lower rating. It does not matter how consensual the actors in that sexual act may think it is, if it is someone under the age of 18 with someone over the age of 22, it is rape and should be treated as much. Instead, the author not only did not treat it as such, she also made it seem as though because the actors were consensual, it was ok and the detective didn't have to worry about it as hormone driven teenagers will be hormone driven teenagers.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it, but

This moves quickly. The pace of the narrative feels relentless. There is a lot of world building and a lot of character. I can see this being a great series.

But.

There are some significant errors that crop up. (See ‘Spoilers’ for details). There was also a lack of development or definition in the main character. She was doing *everything* at breakneck speed.

I believe I will try the next book. Even as glib as everything was, I still enjoyed reading the book.

At one point the MC mentioned getting revenge for the death of her father. It was confusing, as she also mentioned she didn’t believe he was dead and there was no other mention of Benyiro Family as the cause of his death. Completely out of the blue.

There were also issues with geography. Specifically, if you state that the oceans rose (due to climate change) then that also means that peninsulas and estuaries are now in different places. And waterside restaurants would be newer as the old ones flooded. You cannot simultaneously change *and* not change the world.

Finally, the MC has a flying car (!!!), yet her Family doesn’t have a jet the can do very short takeoffs/landings. It seemed like a huge weakness and over sight. She even left the car behind on a building helipad!! The flying car just didn’t fit in the world very well.

Love the Danica character
The complex but believable world was a great escape
What would happen if the world was attacked by maniacal Boeing from another dimension (the rift) ? What would our world look like after a magical Great War?
Dani is police but connect to the power that be too

Planning on going for round 2 with the next book
Not a lot of romance - no unrealistic meetings and such but still has some sex-writing for those who look forward to it.

I am excite about reading more on Dani and her group

5.0 out of 5 stars Her best one yet!

I've loved some of her books and hated some (the sirens), but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Why? All the characters were unique, interesting, well-drawn. The world is complex and I can't wait to learn more about it. The story was meaty with a lot going on and lots of potential for future stories. It left me excited for the rest of the series.

I can't think of any negatives off the top of my head. Nope, drawing a blank. If you like fun and clever urban fantasy, you'll probably like this one.

I read other reviews and totally agree with the good ones!! I’m picky about my writing and storylines and this was great. Enjoyed a “mature” heroine (cuz 35 is so mature 🙄) really liked all the little subplots and intrigue. For a paranormal story it was very realistic in that I could visualize this happening. Characters were well written & fleshed out. Like it’s wasn’t stereotypical. Excited to read book 2.

Strong female MC who's not perfect, not an idiot, and not figuring out her place in life. No immediate love interest for the MC. Lots of future plotline foreshadowing. Interesting world build. Good start to a series, I'm going to keep reading.

Like everything she writes, this book was good, very good. If you like strong female characters that get things done, they are here in spades. Very interesting and imaginative world, where our reality as meshed with an alternative dimension of demons, devils, shifters, vampires, etc; and the powerful families that control what our world has become. Highly recommend, great new series.

I’m in love with this new series! Danica James is a delight! The world building and complexities definitely add to the appeal for a reader. This is urban fantasy at it’s best. There are demons, fae, elven, vampires, witches, and mages. Danica is a strong female lead with heart and a brain. BR Kingsolver is a new “must buy” for me!
