I really liked this book which I’ve just this minute finished. The story of the end of Ms Garner’s marriage was at times grimly fascinating, hilarious, sad, optimistic, other words I can’t think of now. I would love to meet her some time and tell her how much I admire her work.
I found this book profoundly moving - it should become compulsory reading for teenagers, as it is relevant to our developing knowledge of less-obvious forms of domestic violence. The confusing combination of lies, sarcasm, put-downs and betrayal amidst periods of pleasant interactions is exactly the recipe for a slow, tortuous and destructive marriage. I am immensely proud of Helen Garner in publishing this diary and for her efforts in self-development, and wish her love and continued success.
