P. Mattern has created a really relatable story in “The Winter House”. I was drawn in immediately when it was revealed that Ellie had lost her son at a very young age. I also lost my daughter at a young age and that immediately drew me into the story. Ellie decides to move to another state and live with her only living relative. An Uncle who is older and she hasn’t seen him for decades. As you continue to learn about all the characters and the house she moves into with her Uncle you soon find out that this is not a normal house and that her Uncle is somewhat of a hermit. So many twists and turns happen to Ellie that you can feel a tension building in the house and in all the characters! So many ghosts in what appears to be a peaceful home. As Ellie learns the history of the house and surrounding areas, she also discovers some very strange things going on…. Does Ellie ever make it safely away from the house, her Uncle and the ghosts. You can find out by grabbing the book today! I absolutely loved this book and I highly recommend it. You can’t go wrong with it. An outstanding read!!
This character Ellie is so easy to relate to since nearly all of us have lost someone, including beloved pets or something(homes, jobs, etc.) during recent Pandemic. Some losses are easier to recover from...losing a child is never one of them Somehow Ellie manages to pull it together enough to formulate a plan to escape to what she hopes might be her only safe haven, but it may be anything BUT....THE TWISTS ARE DELICIOUS!
This book is outstanding. It has everything you want to read about. A mixture of heartache and love. The growth of a woman who experienced such tragedy and came out a better woman. Of course there are a few ghosts thrown in to spark even more interest that you can't put it down. Fabulous read.
Floooove it! Ellie needs a new start (and a bit of help). She goes to an old family home looking for just that. What happens there is anything but boring. She has more men than she knows what to do with. And an uncle who is so welcoming. What could go wrong!? Well done!
I loved this story. The main character gas gone through such tragedy, looking for a new beginning, finds out about secrets from the past. Lots of twists and turns, love triangle, ghosts ... this book has it all.
The characters were phenomenal!! I loved getting to know Ellie!! The things that she's been through made me feel for her. I had a connection with Ellie!! She was a brave and strong character that kept me wanting to know what was going to happen to her next.
The storyline was very well written. I enjoyed every little twist and turn within the story. I was kept on the edge of my seat from beginning to end!! I highly recommend this read!!
I adore P. Mattern's work, and she has not failed to keep me on the edge of my seat with this one! We all have had heartaches and loss during the Pandemic.....and even before. This tale touches all of our hearts and gives hope. But ooooh the twists!! Again I actually yelled out loud "I did NOT see that coming!!!" several times. Loved loved loved this! If you have not bought a copy of The Winter House do so right now! You will not regret it!
Disclosure: I read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
And I was glad I did. Ellie Campbell recovers from the loss of her mother, then her son, in short order. She travels to Woodstock, VT to live with a writer uncle in her grandmother's old house. But the house and the nearby lake have ghosts. And a local handyman and a lawyer have designs on Ellie, which she enjoys to their spicy fullness. But not everyone is what they seem.
I would like to have seen this book go a little longer. There's enough intrigue, both mundane and supernatural, that I felt it could have played out more.
But what makes me recommend this one is P. Mattern's capture of small-town Vermont, which I recently visited, and her ability to convey how the smaller the town, the bigger the secrets. Well done!
When Ellie Campbell loses everything, she decides to live with her Uncle Aaron. Ellie has not seen her uncle in a long time but she has nowhere to go. Ellie finds out that the house her uncle is living in, is now called Gates Manor. Also, her uncle tells Ellie that the house has ghosts. Throughout the book, you find yourself learning more about the house and the past occupants. I couldn’t put this book down, loved the characters and great storyline. Winter House is a well deserved five star book. You have a awesome paranormal story with a romantic twist that P. Mattern has done such a fantastic job storytelling !!
