Nine Lives had me going from the very beginning! First of all, what a great narrative tool to have the parts counting backwards. That made you know that somehow, within the chapters of those parts, at least one person would not make it to the end of each. The tension! Even after the "Who" & the "Why" start to slowly piece together late in the reading, there is a huge plot twist that stops you with a screeching halt. Wait, What?? LOVE when that happens!
My only critique is the very last chapter. It felt like an epilogue of sorts. I can't say much without risking a spoiler & I certainly don't want to do that. I just felt that it was wholly unnecessary & a little incredulous. The story was quite complete and satisfying without it. And I can only think of 2 reasons for it to have been added on. But again, to propose my theories would be spoiler territory. Sorry. You won't hear it from me, LOL!!
Even with that, I so thoroughly enjoyed this book! Will look into the author's other novels. Very highly recommended!

Nine Lives plods along with sketchy portraits of the victims-to-be. It's virtually impossible to keep up with these different people who are superficially presented by the author and about whom you couldn't care since they're basically cardboard cutouts. The conclusion of the novel is even more disappointing and utterly preposterous; it's a contrivance that's impossible to accept as having validity even within the realm of fiction. I think the author is lazily resting on his laurels in this one. Not worth the time spent to read it.

If you thought his last book was uninspired and rather boring, and Eight Perfect Murders, while great in concept (and cover!) was a bit of a let down in execution, you'll be delighted to hear that he's firing on all cylinders with Nine Lives. Everything element of this book was engaging and satisfying. I wonder if maybe the 'book-a-year' schedules authors like Swanson are put on require them to sacrifice quality and that's why it can get uneven. But he hit all the notes perfect with this one. Congrats, Peter!

I have read all of Swanson's books and will read whatever he publishes in the future. I don't do well when there are lots of characters in a book (I forget names and have to keep reading to figure out how they fit in when they appear in a chapter...this book has lots of character so it was a challenge). The plot is impossible as is the resolution, so why am I giving this 5 stars? I just like the author's writing. I never got bored. The very last chapter was a good surprise.

As each section ended I swore that I would put the book down and get to sleep...but no. I had to see how it ended. I love the golden age books and I can see how this is seen as an homage but that doesn't do it justice. I have to read this author's other works now. Highly recommend but maybe not if you have to get up early.
