I started my "Papergirls" journey by buying Volume 1 of the graphic novel in a bookstore for a flight. By the time I landed, I was ready to add the entire compendium into my cart. This is such a great read; a perfect blend of science fiction, fantasy, surrealism, and 80's culture. The artwork is incredible but the story and character development is even better. Probably my favorite graphic novel I've read this year.
I love Paper Girls and this giant paperback is awesome. It has the complete story all together in a large, sturdy omnibus format. It's a beautiful collection that includes all cover art before each book. Highly recommend for any sci-fi and fantasy fan age 13 and older.
I’m not sure what I expected- but I picked this up after falling in love with Brian Vaughan’s aptly titled Saga. And the story I found here was very different, but shares with Saga the balancing of the cosmic, mind-melting and theatrical with fine-grained, beautifully observed intimate relationships. He and his co creators are just really good at evoking not only the 80s (I was 13 in ‘88, so just a year older than the girls here) but the qualities of our 80s analog friendships. I was just so sad for this to end. It was lovely.
Went in completely blind when I started reading the book, and was completely thrown out of expectations of what the story was gonna be.
Paper Girls is an excellent blend of genres of old-school aesthetics and science-fiction futurism. Each turn of the page throws something new and progresses the plot even further and has some of the best character development I've seen in a while.
Highly recommend the full compendium. It is definitely worth it.
Also, do not take acid when reading this. You'll probably think you have dyslexia and that your making up the story in your mind.
