5.0 out of 5 starsMeghan Quinn at her best in this hilarious, heartfelt and swoon-worthy romcom!
Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2022
Meghan Quinn completely slayed me and brought all the feels with Put Me In Detention! I couldn’t put this super sexy, hilarious, heartfelt, emotional, and swoon-worthy rom-com down. A blend of some fun tropes, Put Me In Detention is Meghan Quinn at her best. Part accidental marriage/marriage of (in)convenience/forced proximity/enemies to lovers, it came together fantastically into another one of Meghan Quinn’s outrageously hilarious romcoms.

Ever since reading his appearance in the last book, mysterious Pike Greyson has intrigued me. The snippet of chemistry we got between him and Cora had me waiting on the edge of my seat for their story, and it exceeded every one of my expectations. I loved everything about this story and no doubt about it, my heart was invested. The characters were EVERYTHING and I completely fell head over heels for Pike and Cora, and their love story. Pike is all kinds of delicious. Sweet, selfless, sexy, and a little possessive, he definitely stole my heart. And Cora in turn was feisty, fun, a little lost, and a hot mess. There was a lot for her to discover in her journey and a mountain of growth in her character.

While this story was obviously heavily centred around Pike and Cora, a special mention has to go to Keiko's side plot and her unlikely yet super sweet friendship with Pike. Quite possibly my favourite part of this book!

Everything about this romantic comedy made me all sorts of happy and I honestly couldn’t stop smiling and laughing. Meghan Quinn pulled out all the stops and threw a few surprise twists with the plot, and I couldn’t have loved Cora and Pike’s story more. The way she blends the humour with genuine emotion is one of the reasons I find her writing so addictive. Put Me In Detention had everything I need in a romantic comedy; chemistry, humour, steam, depth, and emotion, but also the ultimate happy ending which made me genuinely tear up. I could not put this book down, laughing out loud at times when the banter and bickering became too much to keep it in. It completely swept me up into a whirlwind romance which was much needed this time of year.

DNF @ 6% - Beware, Rant ahead...

This was so annoying and was the first in a series of DNFs for me.

Firstly, don't give me a prologue that basically summarizes the first large chunk of your book. The prologue was fine, then I had to read the entire story long and drawn out when you already told me what happened? I tried to read it... then I tried skimming it after I got bored... I made it about forty pages in before I decided I didn't care enough to continue.

The characters were bad. The hero was okay I suppose, I hadn't gotten to him too much yet but the heroine was kinda annoying. It wouldn't have been so bad if her friends weren't off the charts, eye gougingly, awful. Keiko (yes, hers is the only name I remember because I wanted to reach through the pages and stab her) was atrocious and completely unbelievable. Whoever sat through that woman's entire story deserves a damn medal. I get that the author was trying to make her awkward and sciency but it was just ridiculously out there. I would have even been able to deal with that if there weren't just these HUGE blocks of dialogue for her. Eventually, I just skipped over those in entirety and guess what, they weren't needed. I still knew what was going on. Then again, maybe because the prologue told me everything already. Who knows.

Bottom line, this was so bad that I'm annoyed it's even sitting on my kindle and is enough to make me not pick up another Meghan Quinn book for years to come.

As much as I enjoyed the Cora and Pike storyline I absolutely hated anything and everything Keiko. She is the worst character in the entire series. She's pregnant and acts beyond ridiculous. Everything she says and does is blamed on her pregnancy hormones.
Lame. The best friends with Pike line is unbelievable and forced. Keiko completely ruined this book.

Put Me in Detention is a standalone book among a few more Romantic Comedy’s. There are four founding members in the “Ladies in Heat Book Club. They are Cora, Greer, Stella and Keiko. These are the ladies that these stories are centered around.

See Me After Class was the first book and was Greer Gibson & Arlo Turner’s story. Next was Earn Your Extra Credit and was Stella Garcia and Brock Romero’s story. And this is Put Me in Detention and is Cora Turner and Pike Grayson’s story and maybe Keiko’s story too. I am not sure if she will get her own book.

Cora is in Vegas to celebrate her “divorce” and Pike happens to be in Vegas too. Cora has been attracted to Pike since he started teaching at the high school. They ended up getting drunk and married in Vegas only “what happens in Vegas” doesn’t always get to stay in Vegas. Pike teaches at Forest Heights High School. The same school that Arlo, Greer, Stella and Keiko teach.

I absolutely love Keiko and I loved it when she called Cora a “nitwit”. Keiko reminds me a bit of my niece with her stilted and brilliant conversations. It tore me apart when she was so open with Pike about being friends.

Pike was a truly nice guy! I loved him! Cora was a bit mean at first because she didn’t want to be married again.

Meghan Quinn is such a master at pulling out emotions from this reader. I laughed, was tearful and then laughed some more!

I was fortunate enough to have received an audio copy to review and it was such a delight to listen to Narrators Vanessa Edwin and John Hartley. I listen to most of my books via the text to speech feature on my Kindle. So it was great to be able to listen to this book, with actual live narrators! Put Me in Detention was even more enjoyable as an audible book!

I think the next book for Meghan Quinn is The Reunion and we got a little taste of it with the Novella The One Night. Let’s just say I am looking forward to reading her next book! In the meantime I give 5 stars for Put Me in Detention!

5.0 out of 5 stars A slow-burn like only Quinn can deliver.

Put Me in Detention has everything I love about Quinn's novels: witty characters, laughter, a tension-filled slow burn, and, as always, she instills a lesson that we can carry with us long after we finish the book.

I'd been looking forward to reading Cora's story since we first met; there was something about her that drew me in, and as I read Put Me in Detention, I knew her story was one I needed, a story that would become ingrained in my heart.

Cora had a vibrant and sassy side, but she was also reserved and closed off at times to protect herself. I understand it on so many levels; a person can only take so much before they begin to expect the worst; only allowing people to see what you want them to see, and not allowing anyone to get close enough to hurt you.

Pike was a conundrum; he had a tattooed, bad boy biker vibe, but he was so much more than his outward appearance would suggest. He had a wonderful heart. He wanted to make a difference in the world, and he and his siblings were doing just that.

Pike and Cora had a sizzle that seemed to grow in intensity with each page. Their connection was palpable with each word, and the more Cora pushed, the more noticeable the tension became. Pike saw Cora in a way that no one else had, and she began to see herself in a new light as a result.

Put Me in Detention is a slow-burn that only Quinn can deliver, brimming with witty banter, laugh-out-loud shenanigans, a swoony hero, a sassy heroine, and feels. I adore this world Quinn has created.

Jeeves Reads Romance
TOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE
4.0 out of 5 stars Steamy but long
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2022

I'm sad to see this series come to an end, but this steamy romance wrapped everything up with a neat little bow. Did I love this couple? Not particularly, but I didn't dislike them either. This was the first book in the series that dragged for me; there was just so much other stuff going on that I never fell for these two together. There was still some fantastic banter, a playful feel, and plenty of steam, but I wouldn't say that I connected to either character. Put Me in Detention follows the theme of the series - pushing boundaries with heat that slowly simmers into heart. These two are fire together, and the steamy scenes are some of Quinn's sexiest yet. Married as attracted acquaintances, they spend a significant portion of the book fighting the sexual tension, and that made for one steamy, intense read.

The story follows Cora, a woman who is ready to celebrate her new single status with a one night stand on her Vegas divorce-cation. Cora's luck seems to change when she runs into the broody bad boy who teaches at the same school as her brother. Despite flirting shamelessly with Pike for months, he's never shown an interest in Cora... until that night in Vegas. When the two wake up, they discover that their alcohol-fueled night has resulted in a marriage that throws a wrench in both of their plans. But Pike has his reasons for wanting to make things work, and that's all kinds of trouble for a woman who just got out of a relationship. Cora agrees to give their marriage a chance for three months... but she's sure she'll be able to drive Pike away before then.

We got a peek at Cora and Pike's dynamic in the previous book, so I was excited to get reading - and I loved the sound of the blurb. I'll admit that I was a little disappointed to discover Pike's reason for going along with the marriage. I was kinda hoping he actually was smitten, and that's not the case. His deception is likely the reason why I didn't fully connect with him, because Pike makes for a great hero otherwise. He was easy to love in so many ways - loyal, patient, and caring, with a definite bad boy side that added some sizzle in the bedroom. I didn't really like Cora in this; I get her reasons for pushing Pike away, but there's so little of the book where she's actually open-minded. I also didn't need to know so much about Pike's past relationship. Ultimately, there was nothing major holding this back from being a 5-star read, because it had the same playful, sexy vibe that I love about Quinn's work. There was tons of great banter, and it definitely brought the heat. With more likable characters, it wouldn't have felt 150 pages too long, but you've really got to be loving a book for 500 pages not to feel endless. We do get some strong moments with the friend group, and this book tied the series together so well. I'm happy with the way things turned out, and there was definitely more good than bad.

I didn't know this was attached to three other books, so I felt lost with the previous books characters.
Also, Keiko is so ridiculously overdone with her robot personality, it felt like a bad joke.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pike and Cora's love was meant to be!!

Was it love or lust at first sight for Pike and Cora when they first laid eyes on each other at the faculty picnic? Their chemistry was instant but her overbearing brother stood in the way of any romantic entanglements. Cora’s recent heartbreak turned into a hot time on her girls trip to Las Vegas. She packed a super sexy dress for her night out and she was on the prowl for a sexy guy to wash away her pain. Cora found it hard not to swoon over Pike because he had been the star of many of her dreams and the perfect specimen of a man. Cora wanted to ignore him but somehow her incredibly high heels led her straight to the bar as if she was in a trance.

Pike Greyson is the sexiest of Meghan Quinn’s heroes. It must be his British accent or could it be his sexy arm tattoos, or possibly the way he gazes into Cora’s eyes as if he knows everything about her. Cora was putty in his hands as they threw caution to the wind and enjoyed the electric nightlife of Las Vegas. What could possibly go wrong? The attraction between them had always been there and Cora did want a fun night out on the town, so why not indulge her fantasies? Pike was the perfect distraction to remind Cora that she was worthy of love and romance. He was a man on a mission who oozed self confidence and went after what he wanted. A little Vegas luck came his way when Cora appeared by his side in her barely there cocktail dress. She was an angel in stilettos and Pike was sure the rest of his night would be blessed with fun, laughter and a little Las Vegas magic. Besides, wasn’t it true that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than the previous book, but that's not saying much

The sad thing about this trilogy is that the author is a very good writer, she uses solid tropes as the framework for her stories, and her characters are basically likable. But then the details get in the way.

In the previous book, Forest Hills school teacher Stella and baseball coach Romeo go from friends to lovers, but there's a lot of silliness and total lack of communication to get them to the happily ever after (HEA). In this book, Cora (sister of Arlo, uptight English teacher in book one) falls for her brother's colleague, Pike, the British history teacher. Cora is getting a divorce from a short, miserable marriage and wants to cut loose in Vegas where she conveniently runs into Pike (where do they get these names?) and wants a one-night, no-strings romp in the sheets. Instead, the two of them get roaring drunk and end up married in a drive-through chapel. (Paging Britney!)

Here's where it gets silly ... about 15% of the way through the book. Pike doesn't want to get divorced because he made a bet with his evil dad that the marriage would last at least 3 months. At stake: The foundation for literacy that is dear to Pike's heart that his father wants to dismantle. Pike doesn't tell Cora any of this. So he wants to stay married, and he also finds Cora cute and endearing. Cora desperately wants to get divorced because ... um ... let's see ... Yeah, the only reason she gives is that she just got divorced and she wants to be single. Even though she is enchanted by Pike.

But rather than explaining that she just got divorced and wants to be on her own and doesn't want to be married again, she allows him to move in (WHY???), then enlists her friends to pull IDIOTIC pranks on him to get him to back down and divorce her. Burning all his meals? Stupid. Ex-Lax in his coffee? Dangerous! Decomposing swim trunks at a pool party? Ridiculously mean. This woman is supposedly in her late 20s with a fairly good business as a PR person, and her friends are teachers and Pike's colleagues. What the actual HECK??? Can't she just say, "Look, this is why I want a divorce."?

Meanwhile, why doesn't Pike say, "Look, I understand why you don't want to stay married to me, but I really like you and want to give this a chance. BESIDES, I made a stupid bet with my father ... so could we at least make this last three months?" The two of them are totally hot for each other, so that shouldn't be a hardship. It's only three months! They could have their fun, plot against his father, and go their separate ways -- or not.

I can see that the author is trying to pound home the idea that couples need to communicate, but the lengths they go to to NOT communicate is ridiculous. These are supposed to be grown women responsible for educating Chicago's youth. They are worse than high school children.

A big problem with all three of these books is the character of Keiko. She is kind of a Greek Chorus character, observing and offering "wisdom." She is like a very amped of version of the character of Sheldon on "Big Bang Theory" in that she is on the spectrum and has NO filters whatsoever. In the previous books she talked constantly of sex in very inappropriate settings and with uncomfortable questions and details. It felt like a mockery of people on the spectrum, and in that book, her character was unnecessary. Everyone in the book notes that she is odd, unusual, but oh-so-lovable, and for the life of me, I don't know why. She shows very little warmth and has bizarre reactions to everything/one around her.

In this book, she becomes Pike's good friend. Since they are both outsiders, that has some believeability. Her character would be more acceptable without the incredibly long, boring, overwritten monologues and just have her character be an eccentric know-it-all.

This author excels at sex scenes and dialogue. But there is far less sex and much less "Eff this" and "Eff that" than in other of her novels. And it doesn't even matter. It's still *plenty* steamy. All the cursing is a turnoff, even for me, a known potty mouth, so this is a nice break from other novels by this author.

My biggest complaint is that the characters simply behave like idiots, especially for people their age and with their education. Ultimately, there is resolution and some personal growth, but Cora's overt stubbornness and refusal to TALK to Pike, and his inability to confide in her and explain what's happening in his life is just so beyond imagination that I again found myself looking to see how much more of the novel I had to read. (BTW, not until you are about 75% through with the novel does the story really pick up. This book, like the previous one, could use some serious trimming.)

So three stars: Better than Stella and Romeo's book, good writing (though wordy), but juvenile behavior that takes away from characters who should be more likable than they come across.

UPDATED TO REFLECT MY THOUGHTS ON THE AUDIOBOOK

As much as I loved reading this book, having it come alive in my ears by wonderful narration of Vanessa Edwin and John Hartley rocketed my love of this book into the stratosphere! The way Ms. Edwin and Mr. Hartley voiced Cora and Pike had me laughing and crying. There were shenanigans mostly on Cora’s part that truly had me snort laughing because of how wonderful the narration is. But when things really come to precipice for these two, it was like I was experiencing it for the first time while listening to the audiobook. And to add a cherry to this ice cream sundae of an audiobook is the way Keiko was brought to life! I mean this character is true gold!! Ms. Quinn has definitely picked the right narrators for this book and I’m sure I’ll be listening to this one again soon!!

**************

One of the things I love so much about a Meghan Quinn book is that not only am I going to laugh at some of the antics and conversations of her characters but she also gives me all the feels when the Hero and Heroine are experiencing the right amount of angst and emotions. With Pike and Coraline, there is a perfect mix of snort laughing snark and sarcasm but then we get to see the inside of their hearts and they are indeed fragile!!

There’s probably not two other people that are as opposite as these two and it just makes them coming together that much sweeter and swoony and romantic. Little did either of them know when they were in Vegas that their lives would be changed and in all the best ways…. If they could get over their impulsiveness! There’s a definite chemistry between them but Cora isn’t in a place right now where she needs or wants a relationship but sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t need to stay in Vegas!

As the weeks and months move by, Stella, Greer and Cora are in cahoots to get Cora out of this marriage and Pike is not being cooperative to her methods because, ooohhh he needs her for something that is so important to him… he just doesn’t enlighten her. And this is where things get interesting in the chemistry between them. Feelings are growing but can they trust those feelings?

I truly have so much love for Cora and Pike. While they’re not two people you’d think would be great together, they really are… he’s so good for her and making her understand that she’s worthy of love and trust. What I found most surprising and one of my favorite things about this book is Keiko’s friendship with Pike… talk about a surprise! Keiko is at her all-time best in this book.

Ms. Quinn has done a magnificent job of bringing together two people that I never saw together and getting me invested in their love story adding in all the secondary characters from the previous books in this series with all their antics and emotions making this a world I love being in and can’t get enough of!!
