This volume starts with Jason coming back to life on Earth a year and a half after he left it, though this time as a Bronze Ranker. The previous 3 volumes having taken place primarily on Pallimustus (the name of Greenstone's planet).
This volume and the next 2 will take place on Earth.

SPOILERS BELOW

<Spoiler>
Jason starts by equipping some clothes and then reviewing his system messages. He realizes that someone else came back with him, but doesn't know who or where they are.

He spends some time deciding what to do next and opts to visit the black sheep of the family: Uncle Hiro. As one might expect, he is excited to see his dead nephew. We also meet one of my favorite characters: Taika ("like the director, but I don't make films").
Jason some finds out that his Earth is not as magically devoid as he believed. Monsters from myth and legend are REAL and are "coordinated" under the Cabal. The Essence Magicians are under The Network, which is a fractured organization very much divided by region. Lastly, there are the EOA, Engineers of Ascension.
Uncle Hiro actually knows a vampire, Craig Vermillion, and has seen the EOA creeping into Sydney. Jason gets to know Craig and the Cabal. Warns the EOA away and then makes a deal with them (to buy out his Uncle Hiro) after he has to very publicly defeat some Cabal minions.
Craig facilitates a conversation with the Network, but unfortunately the Lyon (France) branch decides to come kidnap Jason and they send a Tier 3 (aka Silver Ranker). Jason has him on the ropes when the Network Assassin triggers an explosion. Being a higher rank, he wakes up first, collars Jason, throws him in a car with his confederates then gets to the closest healer - Jason's afflictions dangerously close to killing him.
Jason escapes (having done quite a bit of suppression training against collars) and slaughters the Bronze Rank Network associates who were attempting to extricate him to France, which is where the other Outworlder landed.

After unkidnapping himself, Uncle Hiro (now flush with cash), Taika, and Jason head to Jason's hometown to go see their family. Jason skulks around a bit, playing pranks on his brother (including painting his helicopter yellow and writing Thanos on it). He shows up to his sister's costume party as a dark Sith Lord. Then after everyone leaves goes to talk to her and Ian.
Jason eventually reunites with the whole family giving a handwaving explanation of what happened (mostly avoiding magic, for now). He, Kaito, and Amy still have some issues to work out, though that doesn't get resolved in this volume. Their betrayal in his old life still stings, though he does try to rise above it.
Jason finally meets with the Sydney branch. This time on his houseboat (Cloud Palace Adaptive Form). They come to a preliminary deal that is predicated on his getting the outworlder back. As they are closing up their conversation an incursion is detected and he is invited along. There they find out how useful his abilities are, specifically his communication suite (party interface) and looting power (that applies to all members of the party). After that one incursion, they realize how powerful an ally he can be and start putting as much pressure on folks as they can to get the outworlder to him.
The international committee works on that and an old friend from school, Asya, actually works for them. She becomes a friend (though she wants more) and gets him a picture of the outworlder (smuggled out by someone in the Lyon branch who grew a conscience.
It's Farah.
Jason erupts and has to portal away so as to not hurt Asya (who he later realizes has done him a huge favor in getting this to him), or anyone else. Asya continues to go to bat for him and gets him an invite to go to Lyon where the branch is being sanctioned. Unfortunately, Miranda (the one Sydney steering committee member who just wants to get rid of Jason) is working with someone in the Lyon branch, and plants a conventional bomb on the magic plane. As it goes off, she has someone she has tricked, let loose the Lyon Silver Ranker. She, he, and a portal user start to escape. She starts giving them a lot of guff and they shove her off a cliff. Meanwhile, the plane blows up, Jason manages to save a few people (including Asya and a Bronze ranker in his security detail) and then lands on the EOA Superyacht that was waiting to mop them up. He has to kill a few henchmen before they surrender. Once they do, he confirms that the Lyon branch's head, Adrien Barbou, put this all together. This was his last ditch effort to avoid punishment for attempting to get information from his Outworlder via torture; information Jason is giving freely, though in trade.
Adrien and his loyalists escape into a fixed proto-astral space (that no other branch knew about) and lock the door. Jason activates his World Phoenix gift evolution so he can enter. There he starts to kill and frighten everyone until he finds Farah...

3.0 out of 5 starsDifferent direction I didn't like.

I know author had to write part where Jason meets his family. But whole secret magic thing in the world we associated with real our world was too much. That many fantasy elements was like being disoriented by too much colors. And plot seems a bit artificial to me.
For centuries there were organizations who were keeping magic secret, and just after Jason returned, secret started leaking and whole world is on the edge of chaos. REALLY??!!!!!
You know I would have been happy if author did not create artificial challenges for Jason, and just moved on after writing some part about family reunion. But whatever. I'm not gonna read these filler books about magical Earth. I may try some later books or this is it.

Book three was, being very generous, terrible. This book is much more like book one and two in that it was entertaining, had a decent story line, decent dialogue, and wasn't just walls of copy and paste content like book three was. The most impressive thing, though, was that there appeared to be actual editing in this book. There were only a couple typos that I noticed and a couple plot issues that ended up being intentional, which would have been enjoyable if the past books hadn't made me assume everything is an accident when it comes to editing. Either way, I think this is a much better book than the previous one.

I liked this book in the series though the end started to wander a bit. I'm looking forward to book 5. Hopefully back on track and less wordy.

The series is decent but a bit edgy. But I like the new twist of the event. I kept imagining uncle Hiro looking like Hiroyuki Sanada (Japanese Actor in Westworld). Don't think too hard, and just go with the flow and I think you will enjoy it.

Last Book had way too many power descriptions in the middle of fights. I was close to being done with the series. This took it in a new fun direction.

This book was more about connecting the first half of the series to the next arc, and it was well done. Jason comes home and deals with finding magic on earth, and comes face to face with all the skeletons in his closet. He deals with them, and we get to know his family and get set up for the next arc of the story.

I hate that it jumped from a slice if life type thing, Jason dealing with a world of magic, into a "you are the only hope to save the planet, nay save the universe, no save TWO universes! Without you they are doomed!!!!!".

I like the story, the world, and the writing style, but the small stories are much more enjoyable and believable than the "chosen one" stuff that pops out all the time. There are great stories out there that don't involve cosmic destruction if you fail to stop interdimensional boogeyman.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid sequel in an entertaining series

Jason has a lot of issues to think about in this book: death, family, friends, PTSD, and the sort of man he wants to be.

That doesn't stop him being a stirrer, and there is plenty of funny stuff throughout.

(Possible spoilers) Some citizens of the USA may take offense over 3 or 4 barbs directed at their fine country (note there is at least one clear barb directed at an Australian politician though many won't get the reference), however this is unjustified - the author is really talking about a branch of an organization based in the USA.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite, but a great addition to the series

Personally, I think that this is an excellent book. However, it's a significant departure from the previous novels by focusing more on introspection, intrigue, and Jason's trauma. There is, as many have said, a lot less combat and a lot more politics. There are several people who have written negative comments about the fact that Jason has negative views towards both the US government and the Australian government. Personally, I think it's very in line with Jason's character and doesn't necessarily reflect the author's own viewpoints. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and read it in only three days. It's a great book, but if you came here for a LitRPG novel filled with action and adventure, you will probably be disappointed.

I just re-read this series in preparation for book five. I laughed( probably in all the wrong places), I cried ( but the heart strings were really plucked), and I never wanted to put the book down. It's truly of epic proportions. People have died and come back even. Anyways, I can't recommend this series enough. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

While this is litrpg, for me that is a minor feature of this series, the character development is so good! Every character feels real with their quirks including the main character.

MINOR SPOILER:

That being said in this book, I feel like the Mc trying to explain some things to his family is too drawn out and dealing with his family drama sometimes feels awkward or unnatural, but that could just be me. But other than I’m loving this series!
