5.0 out of 5 stars You can count on The Dancing Flamingos for hours and hours of fun!
Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2015
The Dancing Flamingos is packed full of fun! The brilliantly colored illustrations and the charming story is suitable for younger children, who are lucky enough to have parents and teachers to read it to them. It is also a great book for slightly older kids.
As an example of what I mean concerning older kids of reading age, check out the inside of the cover page, it says, "Count the Flamingos!" I don't know if the author meant for us to solely count the single characters which comprise the Flamingos in The Dancing Flamingos of Lake Chimichanga, but I figure my eight year old grandson, who is all about math, will go through every page of this entertaining, gloriously illustrated book and come up with the correct total count, summing up every single Flamingo on every page. And he will LOVE that!
I also think that Chuck, the vulture who appears off and on in the book, adds a great amount of fun for older kids as well as younger ones.
So The Dancing Flamingos spans a wider range of children's ages, from young to older, and it is a rollicking ride on every page!

Author Karl Beckstand is a master storyteller. He plays with words somewhat along the lines of Dr.Seuss. It is not nonsense. It is exactly how children come to love the sounds of words, come to love reading as they grow up, and embrace books as they grow older. In other words, being crazy and silly in the right way could offer your child a pathway to access the great tool of imagination. Storybooks like The Dancing Flamingos of Lake Chimichanga encourage a love of the written word which stays with a child forever.
Yes, this book has a lot of pink in it! However my three grandsons will adore it. It has, along with the Flamingos, that wonderful vulture previously mentioned. He displays a dry wit and also acts as a counterfoil to the dizzy, dancing Flamingos of Lake Chimichanga. He alone is worth the price of admission! Your kids will love spotting Chuck when he turns up on a page!
Finally,
all's well that ends well. At the end the Flamingos drift off to sleep, each cuddled up on one leg, as flamingos do in real life, on the sweetly pictured final page. It is a peaceful and reassuring way to end this lovely book.
What a gift, to give a very loved child a wonderful book such as The Dancing Flamingos of Lake Chimichanga, by Karl Beckstrand (illustrated beautifully by Ashley Sanborn). It is playful, inspired, funny, and all around terrific!

I received this book in exchange for my unbiased review--jean

5.0 out of 5 stars Pink-fest of the Highest Sort
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2016
Paradisiac, tropical conditions reign supreme in this Pink of a kind dance-fest. To pull a book like this off, you need a great illustrator, given the vibrant bird-life under discussion. The charismatic art in this publication certainly holds up to the writing, which is warm and attention-grabbing prose that introduces a youngster to new phrases and vocabulary. There is a Seuss book which describes a character that drinks pink ink. This book takes that thought and runs with it, involving us in the notion that Flamingos get their color from a variety of pink and colorful fare.

Do you enjoy books for your children that have no other role than to insert fun into their lives? Well, you've found the wrong book, because this not only does that, but educates as well by influencing your child to enjoy diverse words and flow of thought. If that's what you look for in a book, like I do, than this one is for you. Your child won't even realize that they are being educated, because they'll have such a blast reading this or having it read to them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dance Flamingos Dance
Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2015
Flamingos are pink and THE DANCING FLAMINGOS OF LAKE CHIMICHANGA, that color is everywhere. The flamingos in this story talk about everything. The play and laugh and they dance. Occasionally, they get into trouble and that’s when a vulture comes along to save the day. The vulture also serves as a kind of interpreter who pops up every once in awhile to explain to readers exactly what the flamingos are talking about. The book is filled with all kinds of words, lots of rhyme, and tons and tons of alliteration and assonance. THE DANCING FLAMINGOS OF LAKE CHIMICHANGA is aimed at children but I can see it appealing particularly to girls, children who like flamingos, and children who are studying dance (there’s a lot of dancing at the end of the book and many different dances are named). So dance and prance and dive with the flamingos to celebrate being alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny book that kids will enjoy
Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2015
The team of Karl Beckstrand, author, and Ashley Sanborn, illustrator, have created a really funny, poetic book filled with charming alliterations. Kids will delight in the words, the story, and the humorous drawings. We see the flamingos doing all kinds of fun things, such as flying and trying to escape being hit by an airplane, swimming in all kinds of ways, and dancing different dances. For example:
How did the Flamingos get pink?
"Perhaps it’s the pink
in their pomegranate drink."
How do they fly?
"Row by row, on they go, wing to toe,
What a show.”
Why do they do what they do?
"Why do they dance and prance and dive?
For the simple joy of being alive!"

In this delightful read we have Pink - Pink everywhere and I loved it, yes Pink is a color I like. The drawings are excellent and really bring this story to life. I love the hats and shoes and clothes that these delightful Flamingo’s wear. Their facial expressions are perfect for what is going on and really help with the story. The reader will enjoy sharing all the different things they are doing from chatter to diving, to dancing, they are busy and delightful as well. Loved the Vulture. Great read that young and old will enjoy.

The Dancing Flamingos of Lake Chimichanga by Karl Beckstrand is a wonderfully silly adventure with page after bright colored page illustrating flamingos strutting their best dance moves. Some of which I have never heard. The challenge of this cute kids book is its tongue twisting pages so don't worry about getting into a reading rhythm just simply enjoy your delightful journey.

This would be a book to read during the day versus a bedtime story.
