I received a free ARC of this book and am leaving a voluntary and honest review.
To start off, I haven't read the rest of the series at all. I came into Audrey's Rising fully blind, and it wasn't too difficult to be caught up to speed with what was going on. To be honest, any major complaints I would have about the book would be because I haven't read the rest.
I thought this was cute, for lack of better words. More of a 'Meh' read, but a good way to pass the time. There were times when it dragged a lot and others where pages passed in the blink of an eye. I don't know if it's because I haven't read the rest or what, but I felt the romance was a little rushed, as both characters made it clear they had less than zero interest in the other character before the book started.
There was also a lot of 'I'm evil' angst in Audrey's mind, and I'm not sure if that's a large factor in this series or what, but personally, it felt like there was too much. At one point it felt like 'evil' had been said a crazy amount of times in one ebook page.
The mature scene came out of the blue and vanished just as quickly. If Crofoot truly wanted a mature scene, there should have been a lot more buildup and then a better decrease (is that the opposite of buildup?) through the scene. The moment sprung up, was over within a page, page and a half, and it was never talked about or thought of again. In my mind, it was as if Crofoot had a quota of mature scenes he had to add, and he cranked one out just to get it over with.
I don't believe I'll read it again, and I might not pick up the rest of the series based on this book, but I don't think I wasted my time reading it.
