Using the f bomb ruins a story for me. The other language unless it gets to bad doesn't. You can tell a story with the nasty language. The plot and action and characters were good. Just lost appeal for me

Gideon Hawk is a Deputy Marshall in the Dakota Territory. An easy-going man that loves his wife, Linda, and son, Jubal, also has a deep regard for the law. His wife was a fragile woman and his boy was a little slow in getting started in life. Linda and Hawk worked with him but Jubal was just going to take his time enjoying life. His favorite things were fishing with his dad and carving his beloved horses. Doing his job, Gideon had arrested Ted Meade, and he was hanged for his crimes. You can’t be a lawman and not gain lots of enemies, from people that get caught to the family members! Ned Meade was one of those that intended to make sure Hawk paid for his part in his brother’s death.

Ned found out about Hawk’s son and arrived at the school. He had told Jubal that his dad had sent him and that his dad was going to buy him a horse. He insisted that Jubal needed to check out the horse, so he needed to come with him. Now being a Marshall didn’t pay all that much, so to add to his income when he was not chasing someone, he dealt faro at the local saloon. On this day, he had just returned to dealing when the schoolmarm showed up. She let him know that Jubal did not return to the classroom after their break and that he rode off with some rough-looking men.

Over the next 24 hours was the time that changed Gideon Hawk’s life forever! Losing both Jubal and Linda caused a coldness to enter his heart, and he was not sure it would ever thaw. Gideon Hawk was going to continue to clear the world of the scum, but he was going to do it on his terms only!!!

What did I like? This was the most moving western that I have read in a long time. Being a mother and having lost a son, I know the freeze that seeps into the heart, and you don’t think it will ever leave. The pain just never stops. Peter did an excellent job of writing and expressing those emotions. I felt every moment of agony all over again as Hawk did. The other four stories continue these emotional feelings, all the while he doles out Hawks' law. The final story “Bullets over Bedlam and Border Snakes” brought a really passionate finish to this omnibus. It brought me to tears!!!!

What will you like? If you have read any of Peter’s books, such as Yakima Henry and others, you will know that he is an exceptional writer that pays close attention to details. His characters are amazing, and many feel so real that you would think that you are reading a history book. He takes them and molds them into the person next door that you definitely want to know or at least you can relate to them. Another of his writing talents is the attention he pays to the descriptions, right down to what the character is wearing. All of this takes and puts you right into the storyline yourself. It is amazing. These five books will open up the wild WEST to you in a way that you have not experienced before. Get ready for one exceptional ride through the hell that Gideon Hawk lived through. Awesome!!

This book is a wild ride through the old west where gun fights were plentiful, robbers run wild, Sheriffs were constantly busy and saloons had lots of business. Where whiskey ran, lawless men took advantage of the ordinary citizen and dastardly acts of violence took over. I won’t ruin it for you but being a female, I cried for most of the book; the writing is terrific but when acts of terror bring children into the story, I barely handle it. That doesn’t mean I won’t keep reading this series because every once in awhile I enjoy reading how the west was really won. I also admit that I’ve read this author’s Yakima Henry stories and I loved his toughness as I did Gideon Hawk in this book

Gideon Hawk, lawman with a vengeance turned vigilante!

Hawk lost his family due to outlaws. He became judge, jury, and executioner. Simple plot, simple story. Yet one, due to the author's embellishments and tiresome descriptions, in which the reader needs a thesaurus by his side.

Having grown up in the west and working with cowboys, I had heard none of the phrases coined within this narrative. It grew weary to read. May have made a good essay. But became quite boring.

I do not read westerns for sexual content. The story line is good but the more books in the series I read, the worse it seemed to get. It was disappointing.
