5.0 out of 5 starsNot gonna lie... I love this show.

...and I hate the fact that this is the final season. It's been such a good series. Great writing, great acting, and great production. To get all three in sync is such a rare combination and treat. After watching the first episode, it looks like this season is going to be just as good as the previous ones. I'm sure I will be re-watching the entire series more than once when it's finally over.

3.0 out of 5 stars Season 6 Episode 6----OMG!! What the f*ck was THAT!?!?!?!?!?
Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2022
I have been a devoted--nay, fanatical--fan since the beginning of the series. And Season 6 was progressing well. Until Episode 6, which was a cinematic and narrative cluster-f*ck. It was as though the producers walked into the sound stage on Monday morning and said, "Well, bad news, the bank is foreclosing, and we're out of here at the end of the week. Everything--sets, costumes, production hardware--goes on the auction block. So let's wrap this thing up." Result--a frenzied script, bloated with confusing, under-lighted, bad-audio space battles, plot lines cast to the wind (why spend 5 episodes building the Laconia story and drive it into a wall in episode 6?), and a denouement trying to be "Star Wars, A New Hope."

And can anyone explain how the malevolent Ring Entities, provoked to vaporize Ianoros by the mass of his fleet, plus a few rail-gun rounds, are going to allow free commerce of ships into the Ring under the Transport Union? Physics is a cruel mistress........

but they hacked the last season in half. Who cares what their excuses are, it was a great premise with limitless potential like all those new universes that we've barely explored. Who cares about Marcus whatever? Show us new worlds or protomolocule people who can walk on the sun's surface or swim in sulphuric acid, etc. Lately, it's just another soap opera of human dilemmas. Boring! Please let season 6 epi 2 and on be better!

3.0 out of 5 stars Barely keeping me interested.

The boring and idiotic soap opera elements are just subdued enough to keep me watching this halfbreed sci-fi show. Will I tune in next week? Seems a long time to wait for 15 minutes of good storytelling interspersed among 30 minutes of canned, overwrought melodrama.

3.0 out of 5 stars It Was Once Great
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2022
This series was once the best sci-fi production in existence during it's run. Well that came to an end early in Season 5. The characters you will enjoy the most will take a backseat (or be disappeared) eventually to more woke themes and boredom. There are enough good actors (just not Steven Strait) and the overall production, CGI, and set design is pretty decent. Something changed in Season 5 and continues to suck into 6 when this review is written. So if you want to treat the show like LOST and enjoy it's moments, check it out, you may enjoy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars But is it woke?

This is almost as good as the 8th season of Game of Thrones. Fortunately for GoT they didn’t have to “sacrifice” main character and and plot lines to the altar of angry frontier justice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where is the SciFi? This has turned into a soap opera in space
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2021
I am really confused. I thought this show was a scifi flick with some drama added in. Season 6 seems to have it backwards. Where is all the proto-molecule story? They give you a 5 second shot of a space ship going through the ring with funny red light, and that's it. Come on, lets get back to the main story line.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Little; Too Late
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2022
Season 6 improves on the plodding season 4 and "what were they thinking?" season 5. After wasting two seasons and only having six episodes for the final season, there was probably no way to fix things.

The show runners still went on tangents that wasted time. The colony scenes would have been far better in seasons 4 and 5. Showing them now only left the audience annoyed at bringing in a point that will have no resolution. It also took time away from the storylines they built up in 4 and 5. It was not a good choice.

Meanwhile, scenes that should have had some impact felt rushed and often soap opera sappy. The need to blast mood music during scenes is a sin of too many productions today. It feels and is far too manipulative. The show can't trust you to know this is a big moment and has to let you know by audio cues. It is the equivalent of a laugh track.

Getting rid of Cas Anvar was a mistake.

Finally, the show continues with foul language and sex. The books have the same problem with language. It doesn't add any realism. Instead, it makes everyone seem dull, including the script writers.

Overall, this was a better season than the previous two. Those though sent the show into a nosedive that six episodes could not fix.

Physicist
3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but flawed.
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2022
THE POSITIVES

Star Wars and Star Trek have played themselves out and are now in the self-caricature mode. Stargate and Battlestar Galactica pretty much hit that stage and mercifully died. A reboot of Babylon 5 is a bad idea. At least this gives us a new Sci-Fi series.

There are no "Will Riker" characters, to take one trope. That is, they are not "perfect", and they usually take more than 30 seconds to solve problems that have persisted for centuries.

Likewise, there is no Federation. All human societies are portrayed as moderately, but not ridiculously, dystopian, which is more believable than the pollyannish vision of Gene Roddenberry.

Plot armor is not much of a problem. There is always a risk that major characters will die suddenly, and this does indeed happen.

THE NEGATIVES

It is one thing for the characters to be flawed, but it is another for them to be unlikable. Notably, the main character and his love interest are unlikable, as are all but one or two of the characters. This lowers the stakes.

Again, flaws are one thing, ugliness is another. The series seems to embrace ugliness (of every kind) for its own sake, not for the sake of realism.

Especially in the last season, there are too many plot lines that go absolutely nowhere. Yes, real life is complicated, and we do not see the beginning or ending of most of the "plot lines" we encounter, but these random events in the series come off as filler, not as realism. The principle of Chekhov's gun still applies.

There is WAY too much magic. The "protomolecule" does a seemingly endless range of things to drive the plot in whatever direction the author intends. This is a badly-written magic plot, not science fiction. Much of real science is the discovery of limitations that were previously unrecognized, and technology ALWAYS comes with limits and trade-offs.

The final episode climaxed with a deus ex machina ending, which felt cheap and very unsatisfying. To be honest, so had some of the earlier plot lines, but this was somehow worse. It appears "The Expense" of the show became too much, so magic fairies killed all the bad guys who might threaten our beloved couple, The End. All of the other plot lines and character arcs? Fuggedaboutit!

To give you an idea how bad this is, it compares strongly with the 1994 Stephen King miniseries "The Stand". Spoiler for the 28-year old miniseries ahead! In that miniseries, just when it looked like the bad guys were going to win, a bad but completely insane man drove up in a utility vehicle with an H-bomb in the back, then the literal hand of God formed and set off the nuke. That was a huge, if inadvertent, admission of the author that he had no idea how to solve the problem, so what the heck, now it's just over.

3.0 out of 5 stars Alex Kamal (Cas Anvar) is missed
Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2021
The show did a piss poor job with Alex's death. He did a great job dying and the remaining characters, especially Amos, turned away from him like fairweather friends. On the first episode, it seems like they must have read some of the reviews in the offseason and felt that they misjudged the amount of "social Impact" that Anvar's real issues would have. Some phoned-in sadness from the characters, just felt insincere. I have finally finished the season, about two weeks ago. I was surprised that it ended like that. Out with a whimper. Really shouldn't have caved on Cas and relied waaaay toooo heavily on Nagata's problem with being a mother of a sociopath. Really interesting conecepts in the first few seasons and a sense of family but they blew it with Alex's death. A betrayal to the fans. Look if Kobe can win an Oscar after a rape charge that was dropped by intimidation of the witness, Canvar could've continued portraying Alex.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Story Has No Purpose
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2022
Ive been a fan since the first season but the show has lost its edge.

First, the Inaros character is not convincing as a terrorist. He could play Prince in a music video, but not a terrorist mastermind.

The plot of Season 6 wanders aimlessly. Lost is the show’s grit. Where the practicalities of space travel were once limited by realism, the whole thing resembles a Star Trek episode now.

And while the characters have been exhaustively developed in prior seasons, it feels more like the equity and diversity crowd has an outsized role in the writing. The characters are completely and pointlessly feminized. Amos has been sidelined and Holden uses his position to advance his relationship with the insufferable Naomi. Even Avasarala seems neutered.

Frankly, this was the best sci-fi out there until this lackluster and meandering season.
