3.0 out of 5 starsEngaging story with many loose ends and dull jokes

Despite its many flaws I have given this series 4 stars so far, because of its engaging storyline and interesting character development. Whereas the first book of boy finds spaceship in barn and becomes a knight of the universe was more of a teen-read than for the adults, subsequent installments brought a complex plot and a truly enjoyable storyline. The protagonist seemingly grows up and develops as a character, along with the friends he makes, and those who become part of his crew. Although there were loose ends aplenty, the story kept moving and making me want to know more. With this book the authors are back to juvenile puns, one after the other, and characters that stopped evolving. The science part of the fiction was always bad, but that did’t really matter before, since the story was good. Now I just want it to end. It is still good enough that I want to read the (hopefully) final installment, but with all the loose ends still left, I fear there may be more to come. If you haven't yet started the series, check to see that it ends with book 5 first.
