Stars: 2.5 out of 5

If you like fast-paced military scifi, then this book is right up  your alley. The action is non-stop and the stakes are high. Don't get attached to characters, because not many will survive this literal hellscape. If the action is enough to entertain you, and you are willing to overlook some glaring plot issues, then you will love this book. And again, if you are here for the action, and don't particularly care about good characterization, this is definitely your book.

Unfortunately, there are limits as to how much I am willing to suspend my disbelief. And the glaring plotholes in this book are bigger than the craters in Hades, sorry, Chicago. The war was 200 years ago. Since then Earth has been a radioactive husk blasted by giant electric storms. Are you telling me that any machinery or supplies survived that long in such a hostile environment and are still usable? They would be corroded beyond repair. At one point, the hell divers come across an electric lock panel... that still has juice... after spending two hundred years in a nuclear wasteland swiped by electric storms.

The whole societal structure inside the ship makes no sense either. You are telling me that the entire population of the Hive is 560-some people. You should have all hands on deck, working around the clock to keep the derelict ship functioning. You should have excellent education for everyone and cross-training, so that each person can perform several different functions inside the ship as needed.

What do we have instead? A stratified society where the upper decks get all the perks, education, food, etc. and the lower decks are basically uneducated cattle. In what apocalyptic world does that make sense? Especially since it's pointed out several times that the Hive and Ares are the last two ships afloat. Meaning, that's it for humanity on Earth.

This brings me to the second complaint I have - the unnecessary plotlines. That whole insurrection storyline served absolutely no purpose. It accomplished nothing but take page time from other storylines. It also makes no sense. As I mentioned, there are only 560 people on board this ship. All of them should be needed to keep this thing afloat. So it is essential that everyone knows what's going on so that problems can be addressed and troubleshooted.

Instead, the captain and the upper decks upper class choose not to tell anyone that their ship is basically sinking and they might have days left to live unless hell divers pull out a miracle. This societal structure crumbles into dust with the barest amount of scrutiny. This ship wouldn't have survived a year after the catastrophe, yet alone 200.

Finally, don't get into this book if you are looking for believable characters, or even characters with more depth than skin surface. There aren't any. Again, this is about on part for the military scifi genre, where most of the characters are just names on a page and inevitable cannon fodder.  This is also why I don't usually read that genre. I like my protagonists with slightly more substance than a carboard cutout. But this is partly my fault. I misread the genre when I picked up this book. I thought it was a post-apocalyptical story, not a military scifi.

I will still probably check out the second book in the series, just because I already own it, but I doubt I will go past that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!

Years after World War III poisoned the planet, the remaining humans all live in air ships floating above the ground. They relentlessly search the globe for somewhere they can inhabit and rebuild but the world as we knew it is gone. There is only a wasteland there that is radioactive and uninhabitable. Hundreds of years later and humanity is barely hanging on. The 2 remaining airships, Ares and The Hive, are outdated and held together with items that they scavenge. A team of people known as Hell Divers, are the only ones who can scavenge things from earth. They dive down and retrieve power cells to keep the ships afloat. When The Hive receive an SOS call from Ares, they have no choice but to go to the coordinates they sent. Only things is, the place Ares is is called Hades! It's a place that many Hell Divers have dived into but none have returned. Can the team, led by Xavier Rodriguez, known as X, survive?

This book rocked!! What a start to the series!! The idea that the last remnants of humanity are in air ships circling the globe was unique (for me anyway). Usually in Post Apoc books, it's about the preppers and how they survive, here it's people from all walks of life, living in a ship because the earth is poisonous. The only way the ships stay afloat is the fact that men and women dive down to retrieve the necessary resources. It was a fresh and unique look to the PA genre.

I've read quite a few of this authors books and am always amazed with his descriptive writing and how he can pull you in right from the start. The action starts pretty much straight away and never lets up. This author can sure right some intense and exciting action scenes!!! I had no problem, whatsoever, in picturing the harrowing scenes of the wastelands, nor picturing the Hell Divers themselves and what it would feel like to dive towards death! Because that's what it is... very few Hell Divers make it past their 15th (or 19th, can't remember the exact number!) jump and the author is able to portray the way the divers feel perfectly. My heart was in my mouth the whole time!!

Another thing this author has a knack for is writing amazing characters. Xavier Rodriguez is damaged. He lost the love of his life and is just basically going through the motions. He is the head Hell Diver and is very very good at his job. The last dive he was on, he lost someone close to him and became responsible for Tin (Michael). He tries with Tin but X doesn't know how to look after someone else. He is a drunk and only lives so he can dive. I loved X right away. He may be gruff but he is loyal to his fellow divers and does what he can so the ship stays a float. He doesn't hesitate to dive, even when he finds out it Hades!! He is a worthy hero!

Then we have Tin. He loses his father and moves in with X. Tin was awesome!! Such a smart little cookie and not afraid to do whats needed. He wants to be an engineer when he gets older and is interested in fixing everything and anything. He was inquisitive and I loved his character. I really hope we see more of him in the next book. Smith also writes strong females. Captain Ash's cancer is back but she knows she has to stay strong so the ship can stay in the air. She isn't afraid to take chances and make difficult choices, but she is also compassionate. The author knows how to write characters that you will immediately connect to.

In all, this was a book that left me breathless many times! It is non stop and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time!!! I don't know how many times I gasped out loud, but can only imagine it was a lot because so much happens, both on and off the ship! I listened to this in a day because I couldn't stop!! Bring on book 2!!!!

I have listened to this novel twice on audible, and when Nicholas Sansbury Smith offered a $.99 special price along with a novella of how he ended up Miles (his dog), I didn’t hesitate to get it.
This is the only series of novels that I have re-listened to on audible.
Having read book one, this is best series ever. Why…character development, plot twists, as well as non stop action. There are several stairs being told at the same time.
Absolutely the best…

5.0 out of 5 stars Scary apocalyptic vision of our only home! This one comes with nightmares!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 19, 2019

Please note: many spoilers in this review, but it’s still worth reading.

Nicholas Sansbury Smith knows how to weave a frightening tale. He’s done it several times now and I keep coming back.
“Hell Divers” is a very unique take on apocalyptic survival especially since the entire human population left are living in the very vehicles that destroyed the earth to begin with. The current inhabitants of these air ships are generations removed from that event and are currently too busy trying to stay in the air and survive than study history. I would too, as they all live day to day trying to keep their zeppelin-like ships in the air.
The airships are way past their “to use by” date which makes it even tougher on the engineers, but on the general populous also. They must grow their food, collect their water, purify it, etc. all the while staying high enough above the irradiated surface of a their once long ago home. Clouds so thick, they can’t see the sun. It’s perpetual shades of grey/gray.
It’s actually a good thing that so few remember what it used to be like, what an American or Russian constitution was and why they needed to be different. They don’t care about the things like that. They care about what their next meal is or actually if. They care about cancer from being crammed in too close to the nuclear engines that help keep them aloft, which is ironic since atomic energy is the reason they are there in the first place. And those engines are worn out, thus the need for Hell Divers.
These are men and women, not so much brave, but know there’s no other choice. Dive or die. Sometimes dive and the diver dies anyway, but it’s what they send back from the surface that counts.
Everything going down is a fast free fall with a chute opening, hopefully because everything is so damned old, but everything going back up goes with an ever finite supply of their precious helium in balloons. It’s a constant battle and there are but a few airships left. Between them all, and that includes the ill and hopelessly sick cancer patients, the humans are down to a barely triple digit population.
But that’s not the case on the surface, no, there’s new kids in town and their name are sirens! It comes from the sound they make. They sound just like an air raid siren. Why? Who knows, but they have no eyes, nose, ears or anything that resembles a normal human, just a face of skin. They do have a mouth, a mouth that would look right at home in a Bull Shark’s 🦈 mouth and they’re fast once down on all fours, like wolves 🐺.
Humans have zero chance against them without firearms and even then their sheer number will overwhelm or maybe the lightening out of the hurricane strength storms will fry our divers or debris will impale them before they ever get to see a siren. Some say that’s a good thing, the people who’ve given up, oh and some of the sirens can fly. I would be remiss if I forget that.
Yes, Mr. Smith tells an unbelievable story. It seems hopeless, but just when things get their worst, the very best comes through. Humanity may be down and it may very well be past the point of no return, but there will always be that determination, that will to go on, that fight to win in the worst of odds. Human spirit.
I personally wouldn’t want it any other way. Get a gun or get out of the way because “Divers dive so humanity lives”!
Thank you Nicholas for an awesome story and yet another reason I have nightmares 😄

I enjoyed Hell Divers 1 years ago, as well as the next 9 books. This novella providing the backstory of X and Miles was a welcome addition to the series. NSS does a great job of letting us see how these two found each other. Great writing!

There are only two left in the world. Large flying war machines that are part helium airship and, hover craft with the ability to fly and they are powered with nuclear power packs. They are hundreds of years old and they survived through the efforts of the hell divers. The brave men and women that are shot out of the craft to dive down to the war torn and demolished Earth to find the parts necessary to repair the craft and keep them flying.

The two craft contain all of the remaining living human beings on earth. One of the ships is catastrophically damaged by a storm and the hell divers they send down are all dead but one. They are killed by falling through the massive storms or from being attacked by the mutant monsters that roam the earth and fly in the sky. The aircraft named “The Hive” gets the distress call and rushes to try to help rescue their sister craft. Can they arrive in time to save half the human race or will they meet with disaster also……

I am a huge fan of the author Nicholas Smith. I have read all of his series of books of the Extinction series and enjoyed them all. This book, Hell Divers, is the first book of a new series. It is about a post apocalyptic world where life is rough and barely surviving is a daily challenge. Hell Divers as the bravest of the brave and their life expectancy is only about 15 dives. Horrible electrical storms, nuclear winter, radiation and mutant killers combine to take their toll on the Hell Divers.

The author has the skill to take you 250 years into the future and show you what life would be like after mankind has destroyed themselves and their planet. He also builds strong characters that you like and want to survive. This is a good book and it is full of action and suspense. I rated it 5 stars. I am already hooked on this new series and I am waiting for the next book to be released.

The next book in the series is released and it is an excellent book also. Great series to read and enjoy! The books are full of action and I like reading them a lot. This author is becoming one of my favorites. His books are entertaining and I just enjoy reading them! Hell Divers II is released and it is a very good story, Hell Divers III will be released soon and I believe this series of stories is getting better with each new book release. This series is well worth reading.

This is the first book of the series and it is a must read to lay the ground work for the story of how the apocalypse came about and the dire situation that humanity is in.

This book is well written and it paints a picture of an Earth devastated by nuclear war with very few human survivors left! It also leaves the world a nuclear wasteland inhabited by mutant creatures and plants that hunt the few living people on the surface of the earth.

The imagination of Nicholas Sansbury Smith is what makes this series of stories interesting and exciting. This part of a great series and it is a good story. I have heard that it may be made into a movie or a TV series.

A great book that holds your interest and keeps you reading the book as you can’t stop!
