B. N. Rundell is an excellent story teller and writer. His characters are well thought out and one quickly identifies with them and their journey. This sequel to book 2 puts Reuben and his wife Elly on their way to Julesberg, and while stopping to camp, they see a Cheyenne war party of Dog Soldiers with two women captives. Reuben manages to barter with the war chief while Elly hides and covers him as Reuben trades his Spencer rifle for the two captives and two horses. They get into more scrapes and get hired as U.S. Marshalls working undercover to protect the stage coaches and gold shipments. A rebel army platoon has other ideas. Well written and lots of action and intrigue.

The Cover is the first strike

Just started the book. I've enjoyed the series and expect the same with this one. I'll update when finished with another review if possible. But the cover, despite being a fine drawing has a fundamental flaw. The main character is reported to be a fairly big, tall man. Yet his portrayal on the cover is of a man with short legs. Big, tall men are not short legged. IMHO, a published novel should get basic details correct. Hopefully the author will correct it.

I was totally evolved in this story. Very good plot. The story brought out many of the hardships faced by pioneers, but also put of loss new families and lasting friends were made. Couldn't put it down. I was so happy that Rueben found his match. The action and humor, happiness and sad moments made the story well rounded. Including villains you want to see there plans spoiled and see them caught and punished. Looking forward to the next book!!!

This story held my interest right from the start . I could not stop reading til I finished the entire storyline. I felt like I was part of the story. You did bring Buster the puppy in the story, but just forgot him. Two children would have made a to-do over a puppy. I will be ordering books 4 & 5. I have enjoyed a lot of B.N. Rundell stories .
