How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsGREAT RESOURCE FOR IN HOME USE OR THE THERAPEUTIC SETTING
Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2017
As a mental health professional, "Learning to Slow Down and Pay Attention" is my go to resource for ADHD. I purchase a personal copy for each one of my clients diagnosed with this condition as it promotes UNDERSTANDING, ACCEPTANCE, OWNERSHIP, and EMPOWERMENT. It's also a great tool to initiate PARENT-CHILD COMMUNICATION. I saw reviews that mentioned using it with their elementary age kids (8 and 9), but my recommendation would be to use it with middle to high school age kids. It's not the most exciting book (from a child's perspective), but it's beneficial and cost effective and written just for them. To a normal functioning individual (or even a parent or adult) these practical solutions may seem like a matter of "common sense", but to a child whose executive functioning is disrupted by ADHD they are useful tips to enhance their personal development and social skills.

Not quite what I expected. My 5yo son was recently diagnosed with combination ADHD. I thought this book would help him understand himself better. This seems more appropriate for older kids. I bought the Cory Stories for him which he really enjoyed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource

I was skeptical about how my 8 year old would respond to this book- Would it engage him? Would he accept the ideas? Would it offer ideas we haven't already tried? My husband and I read each chapter (or section, some chapters are long) with him and talk about it. This has been wonderful for a couple of reasons. First it's helping our son articulate what he experiences, feels, and wants/needs. Second, it is providing us with a purposeful time to sit down with him and talk about HIM. And finally, while the ideas aren't necessarily new (i.e. picking out your clothes and preparing your backpack the night before, making lists) he is receiving the suggestions differently and taking ownership of them. It's been empowering for him to have a name and a definition for what he faces, not as an excuse but as an understanding of why his life is a little more challenging and what he can do to make it easier and feel successful. He also REALLY loves the activities at the end of each chapter and the cartoon-like illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, but advanced for younger readers and discouraging first chapter

Excellent book overall, though I'm not sure I completely agree with the lower end of the age range being 6. My daughter is an advanced reader (DRA 38) at age 7, and did find some of the vocabulary a little daunting. The first chapter entirely focused on all the aspects of my child's life that was "challenging" or "different" with the reader's current environment, causing her to view her environment and experience in a negative light. I know and realized the rest of the chapters deal with building coping skills and learning strategies to counteract those challenging areas, but I think it just caused my daughter to get more discouraged - some positive passages or humor would have been far more effective here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Might be awesome for some. But really for homeschoolers.

As an ADHD mom of a four year old with ADHD, I bought this book in hopes to have some conversation starters so my kiddo won’t feel alone or not understood. It turns out that this book focuses more than I would like on ‘school’ and how the child is perceived, how he feels about homework, school friendships, etc.
I am not a believer in the public education system. On top of that, I live in a bottom of the list country when it comes to schools and results. I can’t think of a worse environment to put a young, bright child with very big emotions and intelligence. This book is still useful, and may be a tool for those kids who encounter the mentioned challenges. But to my kid, I think I would change the approach a little. We haven’t done reading but we are taking a break until he is a little more advanced in comprehension and can follow along.

4.0 out of 5 stars It’s OK, not the most useful but fine for 2nd-7th graders

Concise book for elementary-middle school age children. My 3 year old isn’t at the point to be able to really understand or apply any of it yet. Kind of useful for parents, had a few helpful ideas and tips. I wish it offered a bit more for moms & dads but I probably just need to look into something more in-depth.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book has some great ideas for you to follow for your child

This book has some great ideas for you to follow for your child. It helped me to understand what she was going through. We sat down and read through it. The worksheets are incredibly helpful. It gave me some great ideas so our issues at hand became manageable and we were able to be victorious in projects. It's good to know that you aren't alone and some families are able to work through this and achieve goals.

The checklist in the first part of the book is my favorite. It highlights everything you need, even things you didn't even think needed help. It helped introduce conversation between my daughter and I so I could help her as much as possible.

I highly recommend this book to parents who are needing some help. It helps you from getting frustrated and helps to find a solution.

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

My daughter loved this book! Though it was geared for children a little younger than her. She is 9. It helped her understand herself a little better and to know she isn't alone in her struggle.
