I Do Love Lucy

I watched "I Love Lucy" as a child. At the time, I was unaware that they were a real couple and not merely show actors. They are examined in this movie, along with their peculiar relationship and enduring impact. Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball both took significant risks to be together at that period in time.

This documentary is engaging and motivating. It dispels several myths and presents fresh information and perspective regarding their complicated relationship and professional lives. The movie examines the virtues, flaws, vices, and strengths of each of this power couple which is fascinating as it's mostly in their own words.

The love, sweat, and tears that Lucy and Desi actually put into everything they accomplished were superbly represented in this film.

I thought the most perinent line Lucy's assertion that she was not a funny person; as well as her position that you don't have to be a funny person to get laughs.
Perhaps its all about convincing the audience you are one of them and relying heavily on props and coming through what might be seen as an assault on your dignity with a broad double take. Carson was more sophisticated with similar schtick.
Described at one point as difficult to work with she attained that enviable status of being too big to fail.
Lightweight faux doc scored big.

Fabulous trip down memory lane. Born in 1955, I Love Lucy was probably my favorite show at the time. I adored Lucille Ball. Her gift of comedy was off the charts. Desi completed her. Thank you Amy Poehler for this fantastic documentary. I laughed and cried from beginning to end.

Actress-Director Amy Poehler does a wonderful job on this documentary of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez. It is compelling and inspirational. It thankfully clears up some fallacies as well as putting forth new facts and context to their careers and complex relationship. It is relatable by shining a light on the strengths, virtues, vices and weaknesses of both Lucy and Desi. A truly fascinating look as it is largely in their own words.

I cannot recommend this documentary high enough. The very definition of awesomeness.

What an AWESOME documentary! If I could give this ten stars, I would! I am truly at a loss for words after watching this amazing picture about 2 of the entertainment industry's most innovative contributors of all time! Amy Poehler... you made a hit, and truly captured the love, sweat, and tears that Lucy and Desi truly put into everything they did. To know how these 2 people, from such very different backgrounds, came together as one, in order to bring joy into the lives of others, against all odds, and to succeed in doing so, is an amazing and important story to tell! I have been a huge Lucille Ball fan since I was a child, in the 70's, and enjoy every bit of her work to this very day! I was heartbroken to hear their daughter tell us that Lucy and Desi never really got to become exactly what they dreamed of... just a loving couple, with children, being a family, and enjoying life for what it is... instead, they chose to sacrifice their happiness, and their lives together, to become the major successes that they were then, and still are even after their deaths. This just proves the impact that they had on the world, and all the great feats they'd accomplish for the entertainment industry. I couldn't stop crying, and still can't as I write this review, because of the absolute unconditional love that was shared between these 2 people, even when they couldn't be together as a couple, their hearts, I believe, unequivocably belonged to only each other. I think that was made clear when Lucy jr, talked about her mom and dad watching "I Love Lucy" together, while Desi lay dying... and again when he spoke to her for the last time, which ironically happened on what would've been their wedding anniversary, and all that was spoken was, "I Love You," over and over... and even in death, Desi made it known that " I Love Lucy," was never just a title! WOW! How powerful! It's amazing how much people and things change from year to year, decade to decade, the growth and development of our human existance... only to see that human love and emotions, always seems to stay the same! The love, support, and caring that people have for one another could never be replaced by anything man makes, ever... it's us that choose what to do with it, that makes it a wonderful or horrible human aesthetic. This movie was soo good, I didn't want it to end! To watch how it all began for both of them was beautiful, and actually helped a little, to put things in perspective for me. Lucille Ball was such an inspiration to women everywhere, and she had a few good people surrounding her, that helped to spread that inspiration to the world. How honored certain people must've felt, to have been mentored, or just befriended by such an amazingly, one of a kind spirits like Lucy! Sooo, in the words of our famous and beloved Lucille Ball, " Id rather regret the things in life that I've done, than the things I haven't." Watching this movie... definitely won't be somehting you'll ever regret!

Many of us give this life our best shot. We're not perfect this side of heaven. Lucy and Desi gave it their best, and left me with a childhood where no one had to worry about what I might be seeing. That's honorable in itself. I can still watch episodes today with joy. The end of their story was bittersweet, but beautiful.

This was very well done. The one by her daughter (several years ago) went into more detail about their personalities and their extended families, but this was an excellent summary--except for a little gratuitous feminism thrown in here and there which certainly did not come from either Lucy nor Desi. (Lucy would certainly tell the truth about her work experiences, but she was not into victimhood.)

In all that I have seen, there is one point that has been lacking curiosity.

They did get remarried in the Catholic Church, but that was because of Lucy's in-laws worrying that their problem having children might be because the marriage had never been blessed. But other than that, religion apparently played no part at all in their lives--despite Desi's religious upbringing. Desi womanized, and could not understand Lucy's objections: he said (in his book) that it was accepted in Cuba for a rich man to have a couple different families. Well it should NOT be accepted. Lucille did not seem to be pursuing holiness. (Although she did not have the same--very public--problems as he, and their kids had problems--although they were not mentioned in this documentary). You think it might have occurred to somebody that there could be a better way to live.

They fascinate us so much because they both were such amazing trail breakers. Icons.
