FINAL DECISION: I enjoyed this book because Yasmin is so resilient, and I loved how she stands up for herself despite the approbation of society and even Giles at times. I loved how Giles's love for Yasmin transforms him and how he struggles with his societal expectations. This book manages to be sweet and hot at the same time.

THE STORY: Giles Renwick, Earl of Lilford, is undone by Lady Yasmin Régnier. Yasmin is everything he could want in a wife, except that her dress and her behavior, and her history are not what he sees as proper. That makes her ineligible for consideration as his countess, but he can't stop wanting to spend time with her. Yasmin has a past and is determined to be strong in the face of the disapproval of British society and Giles. Giles is too stuffy and judgemental, yet Yasmin finds that Giles constantly exceeds her expectations.

OPINION: This book is so much more serious than the initial setup appeared to portend. Yasmin and Giles have to learn to speak to one another about their fears and dreams. There was so much I loved about this book, but I really couldn't stand Gile's sister, who just drove me crazy for the entire book. I understand that she is hurting as well, but being hurt doesn't give one the privilege of hurting others.

Despite this, however, I really did love the characters as they worked out their relationship with one another. There was something incredibly romantic about how Giles is completely undone by Yasmin and realizes that he has to change to have what he wants. He begins so judgmental but realizes that he is wrong. So rarely does a hero contemplate his own actions and realize that he was wrong without having an extremely dramatic situation. I ended up loving Giles because he is willing to change to be worthy of Yasmin. Those changes are about mindset and attitude and about his judgments rather than something external to himself. While the reader understands why Giles is the way he is, it is understanding rather than justification.

I really loved Yasmin, who has taken the roughest part of life and made something sparkling and joyful for herself. That is why Giles falls for her and why I like her as well. So much in life could have struck her down and destroyed her, and yet she remains positive about so much.

I think I really have a thing for the grumpy hero and the ray of sunshine. This book has some of that and yet upends all expectations of that trope. Giles is not as grumpy and reserved as he appears, and Yasmin has depth and real pain in her life.

WORTH MENTIONING: I can't wait to read Silvester's book. He is adorable in this one.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE RELUCTANT COUNTESS is the second book in the Would-Be Wallflowers series. The romance here is self-contained, and there is no overarching storyline, so that this book can be read as a standalone. There are appearances, however, by characters from the series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

2.0 out of 5 starsPlease never fall for a man like Giles
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 10, 2022
Spoilers. Giles is a toxic male, controlling and mentally abusive. He repeatedly tries to control Yasmin, telling her she dresses inappropriately and to dress more demurely, telling her to stop flirting with other men. Even knowing his behavior hurts Yasmin, he repeats it and then tries to get her in bed.

He puts her down himself, and watches others do it too, and only ever defends her once, toward the end of the book. He even asks her why she puts up with it, proving he notices, but never does a thing himself to stop it. He has jealousy issues, and not in a romantic way, ripping off a new demure gown she wears because of him, having sex with her, and then telling he he's mad at her right after because men still liked her all covered up and taking it personally.

Giles thinks love is sexual attraction, and even implies he won't be able to control his erection in public so will need a special jacket, and not in a joking way... gross. He just assumes she is very experienced with multiple partners because she dresses scantily and had a condom in her purse (not hers).

I read the whole thing hoping he would redeem himself but he's awful. Yasmin is a good example of a woman attracted to a toxic man but who deserves better. She is obsessed with Giles from the beginning because he disapproves of her, and she finds men like this attractive. She has redeeming qualities but he is a piece of garbage and should serve as a warning for women out there, don't fall for a guy who tries to control what you wear, who doesn't defend you and who has issues with jealousy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep an open mind, because based on early reviews - I expected to hate the hero and I didn't!

Raised in the French court, Lady Yasmin Regnier is no stranger to gossip, after all, her own mother was Napoleon’s mistress and Yasmin herself was duped by a fortune hunter at the tender age of 16. She learned to hold her head high and ignore the whispers, but when it became too much to bear, she left France and went to live with her English grandfather, the Duke of Portbellow. While the whispers followed her to England, her connections and her beauty ensure that she is not lacking invitations or suitors. But not every man falls at her feet and unfortunately for her that includes the only man who has really piqued her interest, the grumpy Earl of Lilford, who clearly doesn’t approve of her, yet always requests the first waltz, then barely speaks to her as they dance, and then ignores her after they finish. She wonders what it is about the earl that intrigues her so and what will she have to do to make him smile.

Giles Renwick, the Earl of Lilford hates that he is attracted to Lady Yasmin, she is completely wrong for him, but she makes him burn in a way that no woman ever has. He allows himself only one dance with her but seethes watching the other men dance and flirt with her, all the while telling himself that she could never be his countess. After the scandals created by his parents, Giles sets himself to a higher standard and would never do anything to tarnish his family name or endanger his younger sister’s reputation. And though she is beautiful, connected, and rich, Lady Yasmin’s reputation and manner are all wrong for him, not to mention his sister, Lady Lydia, clearly despises her and has repeatedly warned Giles to stay away from her. But even knowing all that, Giles can’t seem to walk away and soon finds himself trying to convince a reluctant Yasmin to marry him.

As always, Eloisa James delivers another well-written, nicely-paced story populated by wonderful characters. After reading the reviews for this title, I really didn’t expect to like it, but personally, I didn’t find Giles as nasty as he was portrayed in the reviews, that is not to say he wasn’t a first-class jerk to Yasmin, but neither was he the anti-hero I was expecting. Yes, he was condescending. Yes, he was rude and insulting at times. Yes, he allowed himself to be manipulated by his vile sister. But he does see the error of his ways and while he didn’t really grovel, he does apologize. So while it was not perfect, this story kept me turning pages and was filled with emotion, steamyish love scenes – that don’t all end with a satisfied heroine LOL, great secondary characters, a bit of drama, and finally a HEA with TWO epilogues. In the end, I enjoyed the story, but I was left wishing there had been a bit more follow-up with his sister and I am keeping my fingers crossed for a HEA for Silvester, the Duke of Huntington. This is the second book in the series and has ties to “The American Duchess”, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Cover

*May contain spoilers* This is one gorgeous cover that I can't stop staring at! It's absolutely dreamy. I devoured this beautiful book in two nights.

Yasmin is pure delight and sunshine. She walks through the wagging gaggle of society with her head held high, even if her blindingly beautiful smile is pasted on. I couldn't wait for her happily-ever-after to take shape. Her grandfather is humorous but allows things to happen that didn't feel quite true to that age.

Our hero, Giles, is proud and reserved. He's carried uncompromising standards for himself and his future wife all of his life. It's rather sad to see him push his desires and needs down time after time. He likes and even falls for Yasmin against his better judgment. While reading, I kept picturing him as Mr. Darcy. However, I so wished he had put his sister in her place and demanded that she stop demeaning the lady. In not doing so, he was complacent in the events following and lost some of that stunning heroesque quality.

Now there's a side character that we never see get their comeuppance and that disappointmented me a bit. They deserved to be held accountable and we readers deserved a good scene or two to lay the matter to rest.

I love how this talented author creates these passionate scenes with very little detail. The kisses are clean for the most part.

I'm excited to see where the next book in the series takes us.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ultimately a good love story

I had preordered this and then the reviews were not kind. I am happy to say I disagree, though Giles took a while to find his character and walked through the early chapters like a cardboard cipher. Yasmine, a girl with a damaged past, was strong, rather valiant character I liked almost from page one. Giles cane into his own and was ultimately a sweet man and loyal hero. Was the plot unique? No. Were they separated by a manipulative character who was not original? Yes. But who cares? The love story was smoothly told and believable and I liked the characters together and believed they fell in love. They made the story original and bigger than the plot. James did a good job with them. There were some very sweet moments, like the scavenger hunt flower booth with the pink boutonnière. If there was one thing keeping this from a five star for me it was a weakness, especially in the beginning that often infects James books, repetitive rounds of dialogue that serves no point, doesn’t move the story, reveal her character, and goes in circle after circle, like page filler. The reader suffers while the writer is stuck and struggling. Please say it once, we get it, and move on. Other than that, James is really one of the few historical romance writers in these days of unsophisticated storytelling who knows how to elegantly write a compelling, enjoyable story with characters who are honest and memorable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun romance series!!!

Book #2 in the Would-Be Wallflowers series. An enemies to lovers and grumpy-sunshine hero Regency romance.

Giles Renwick, the Earl of Lilford is the grumpy-sunshine hero that hates being attracted to our heroine Lady Yasmin. She’s scandalous after all according to the ton.. but she makes him feel things he’s never felt for another woman. Lady Yasmin is an innocent being judged unfairly but has kept herself grounded. She’s down-to-earth and cheerful from the inside out.. and always sports a smile 😀 (and definitely dresses a little more provocative than most ladies of the ton). Yasmine has strong feelings for Giles but is unsure to where she fits in his life. After all.. he had always vehemently disliked her. Sound intriguing and a bit confusing? And let’s not forget his scheming younger sister that tries to make their life unbearable. Hatefulness and cruelty are only a small part behind the trouble that little villain causes 😈.

The highlight of my day was to sit back, relax.. and dive into this entertaining, gossipy story that matches an overprotective/jealous hero with a beautiful yet reluctant (will she? or won’t she?) french heroine. I didn’t care for Giles as much as I wanted to but found it to be interesting to never knowing where EJ would go with his character. I absolutely adored Yasmine!!! ♥️ 4 stars — Pub. 11/29/22.

Highly anticipating reading about The Duke of Huntington and Lady Stella who are up next in book #3 “Not That Duke,” out July 2023.

Giles aka Mr. Grumpypants and Yasmin aka Lil' Miss Sunshine are so good together. Yasmin has determinedly rebuilt her life into a happy one that sometimes appears shallow and mindless despite what the ton gossips say. Giles is overly worried with appearances and the societal obligations that come with his title. Is Yasmin a good choice for him? Is he a good choice for her? Can they let go of the pain of their pasts so they can trust each other? Learning how to trust and love each takes quite a leap of faith for them both.

Eloisa James deftly tells the story of the Reluctant Countess with her usual good charm and humor. A delightful read!

We meet Yasmin and Giles in How to be a Wallflower. I fell in love with Yasmin then. I knew Giles was smitten with her too, but you couldn't tell by the way he behaved.
I love their love story in The Reluctant Countess. Yasmin so sweet and very tempting and Giles so stormy. Yet, the two are drawn together like magnets. I had to keep turning each page and was reluctant to have their story end.
A special treat was meeting Yasmin's grandfather, the Duke. A character to fall in love with. I would have loved to have had him for my own grandfather.

I love historical romances! I’ve read all of this author’s books and liked them, even loved some. This book was no exception. It had an intriguing premise - beautiful French emigre falls for stuffy English earl. The heroine, Yasmin, was compelling - beautiful, seductive, and kind. The hero, Giles, was less compelling - handsome and aristocratic, but full of himself and loyal to a fault. They had good chemistry and a bit of sizzle. Some of the plot points were not credible, but the story was entertaining. Overall, good but not great.

I always wait with great anticipation for an Eloisa James novel. And lately, they have been a breath of fresh air as much for what they are not, as for what they are. They are excellently written and beautifully edited. I don’t have to stop and try to parse misstated meanings or malaligned metaphors, or words that clearly do not mean what the authors think they mean. It is so easy on my English Lit majors mind to be able to just sink into a delightful world of the author’s creation and not be rudely jerked out of it periodically. And the historical accuracy is such that one feels at home in the setting. The details are exquisite without encumbering the story. And all this doesn’t even address the content of the story. I love that the author digs deep for her characterizations, not merely skimming the surface, and invests one into the characters. Yasmin and the Earl have a palpable attraction and seeing them learn about each other and themselves, exposing their strengths and flaws, and watching them grow as characters throughout as they navigate their society is a pleasure and a delight.

Love Eloisa James. The only bad thing about a new book of hers is finishing it. Then you have to wait to get your Eloisa James fix. Have read all her books, don’t ever disappoint. Love her characters and smart writing. You can tell she’s a Shakespeare professor. Lots of wit and humor in her books.
