4.0 out of 5 starsIntense and exciting paranormal romantic suspense!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 1, 2022
The first book in the Stope Packs series, this story was originally released in kindle vella, and is now available as a full-length novel. It’s an intense and exciting paranormal romantic suspense, and a really strong series starter, and I loved it.

Mia Stone is an ex-FBI profiler whose career imploded, so when she’s offered the chance to investigate a murder with an old colleague in a small mining town, she jumps at the opportunity. The key suspect is Seth Volk, who inconveniently captivates her from the moment she lays eyes on him, but she is sure there is he is hiding something. In fact, it seems the whole town is hiding something, and when more women are murdered, it turns out that Seth is her closest source to finding out what is going on.

Seth is, in fact, hiding a big secret. He’s a wolf shifter, and an Enforcer for his pack, which is something we know from the beginning, but Mia does not. I loved the little clues and hints dropped, I loved trying to figure aspects of the story out with that ‘secret’ knowledge, and I loved watching Mia delve further and further into Seth’s world without even realising it. And when she finally discovers the big secret, things just get even more complicated considering the mad attraction between them both. And as human law and pack law collide, Mia finds herself right in the middle of it all, having to rely on Seth for her very survival – which is right where he wants her.

It’s a great set-up, and Zanetti writes it so well. The mystery/suspense element is strong, with lots of shady characters around town, and I was constantly guessing who the bad guy was… and I was wrong right up until the end, which is great because I love to be surprised. The wolf politics are well written and work well with the story, and I really enjoyed the world building.

But, of course, the heart of this story is in its romance, and I loved Seth and Mia together! Seth is an alpha in all the ways, he wants Mia from the moment he lays eyes on her, and I loved his determination to get his girl. Seth holds nothing back when it comes to how much he wants Mia, which is always fun, but there’s a strong emotional element as well, which unfolds the more time they spent together, and it’s so gorgeous to see. Their story is complicated with lots of twists, and I loved the direction that it took. Full of surprises with plenty of steam, the chemistry is sizzling, and they are so good together!

The romance blends beautifully with the drama, both of which bring emotion, and which also tie in really well with the suspense aspect of the story. While this book ends well, there’s a lot going on in this world and Mia and Seth’s story will continue in the next book of the series. I’m hoping that the series will branch out, because there are more characters just begging to have their story told!

I always get excited when Rebecca Zanetti has a new book to read, and this one is a great introduction to a new series. I can’t wait to continue.

I drifted away from this author in the last couple of years after having been a fan of the Dark Protectors since 2011. I'm disappointed with the exponential increase in the F-Bomb. The earlier books were great without it, why change? Maybe/maybe not will continue the series. Too many other great authors that don't need expletives to write great books. Just my opinion. Oh, and a word on Mia. "I have a gun", I'm an FBI agent", "I can take you down" - To a wolf? To several wolves? I don't think so! She sounds childish, foolish, silly and not credible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected

I enjoyed the story as a whole. However, the tone of the story was not what I expected. I have read all of the Dark Protectors stories and found an enjoyable mix of suspense, humor and sexiness. However, this story had just a dark feeling to it.

One other thing. Whoever edits her books does not do a good job. (((spoiler))) Seth's house burned down. Yet at the end of the story there was a group gathering at his house.(((/spoiler)))
Maybe most readers don't notice those things but to me it's confusing.

I was also surprised by the physical affects of the mating on Mia. Seth also told Mia that her life expectancy would double. Her life is extended but not indefinitely.

These are probably me just being picky. I gave it 4 stars so overall I liked it and am looking forward to reading Alpha.

4.0 out of 5 stars combustible

This story was first published as a serialized story on Amazon’s Kindle Vella. I wasn’t sure if it would read the same as a full novel. I don’t have Vella so I didn’t read it in its serialized form, getting the story in pieces. But knowing it was originally published that way I was a bit afraid it would mean the story as a whole would be choppy. It wasn’t, and I greatly enjoyed this book.

While this book ends with an HFN and with things between the FMC and MMC at a good place, I notice the next book in the series will also be about this same couple. I can see that. There is much that can still be explored. There’s no cliffhanger, but I know not everyone is a fan of the same couple being the center for more than one book in a series. FYI: the next book is also being released on Vella first starting in October with the full story released as a book in March 2023.

I guess I should get to my actual review. First, the chemistry is on point, as is usually the case with this author’s couples. There was no denying the connection Mia and Seth had. Add to that the things Seth said to Mia…swoon! People, in chapter one I made this note, “Holy shit! The MINE energy right out of the gate!”. So yeah, these two are combustible. Of course, Mia being a former FBI profiler throws a lot of wrenches into the trajectory of their relationship.

That brings me to my issue with this story, Mia’s blinders. I could understand her not understanding what was going on before she learned the truth about shapeshifters. (Although, with all the paranormal romance I’ve read over the years I felt as though I would think any weird small town would be harboring shifters even if it wasn’t.) Once Mia knew the truth she had a really hard time realizing she couldn’t play by the typical rules of law. It was bordering on annoying at times, but then the author at least had Mia acknowledge that it was extremely difficult for her to handle new rules that violated the oaths she had taken as an officer of the law.

The story drew me in and kept me engaged. I’m looking forward to reading more. Not just between Mia and Seth, but also the rest of the pack and Mia’s mom and aunt. There’s a vein of Mia’s story that is not yet complete that should be interesting when it plays out, too. I quickly forgot this story was published in any other format so I found this story to be a success.

I got more than what I bargained for with Wolf by Rebecca Zanetti. If you know me, you I “stan” Zanetti. She is the queen of strong-sexy-dominant vampires and shifters. Her stories don’t just pack the spicy romance, they also come with top-tier world-building and storylines. Even so, I didn’t expect to be thrown for so many twists in Wolf.

Mia is an ex-FBI profiler from DC with a complicated past. As a favor to her friend, she stays in a small mining-town to assist him in his investigation into some unusual murders. A young woman was found stabbed with a silver spike through the throat. It’s easy to trace the silver back to the mine which has long been owned by a rich and powerful family. That is how Mia finds herself profiling the tall and sexy, Seth. Seth is suspect number one. He’s immediately setting off Mia’s instincts that not all is as it seems with Seth and this town. Mia just couldn’t fathom how big of a secret Seth was hiding.

Obviously, he’s a werewolf!
We know he’s a wolf. The title of the book is Wolf! Even so, Zanetti strings Mia along for about a third of the book. As an ex-cop, she’s used to suspects trying to scare her off a case and get her to leave town. Seth, his brother Erik, and all of the townsfolk all suggest she leave. Some even threateningly. Needless to say, once Mia discovers who/what these people are, she can’t just leave. She ignored her chance, and it’s not just her safety to worry about, it’s her mother and aunt as well.

There were several surprises in Wolf by Rebecca Zanetti. In my opinion, it’s always great to be shocked by the killer in fiction. We’re moving along, knowing we have the case solved then, BAM! It’s not who you thought at all. Also, there’s several suspicious people in this town that I’m sure Zanetti could branch off several intriguing storylines.

Mia is the true alpha here.
I liked Mia a lot. In the fiction/paranormal worlds we’ve been taught to know that the alpha wolf runs everything and asserts dominance with their partner. It’s always in a smoldering way that is mostly for the bedroom. I was a little annoyed that Mia wasn’t submissive once Wolf asserted dominance. She really needed to let her human-police mind go once she found her self knee deep in wolf politics. That said, overall I realized that was a good choice by Zanetti and worked in this story. That stubbornness in Mia was true to her character. Mia’s tough attitude with criminals and with wolves was bad-ass.

I’m excited to see how Mia and Seth’s story will end up in the next Stope’s Pack book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book New Series

4.0-4.5 Stars

Wolf was initially released an episode at a time through Kindle Vella on Amazon. I personally chose to wait until I could purchase the book so I could read the entire story at one sitting. Wolf is the first book in the Stope Packs series.

Seth is the enforcer for his pack who live in a small town full of secrets and mystery. They don’t like outsiders and they live by their own rules. Mia is an ex FBI agent who is invited by the new sheriff to help investigate a murder and profile his suspects.

Seth is hot! I’m a sucker for a dark and protective man that for some terribly sad reason only seems to exist in the book world and my imagination. From the moment he sets eyes on Mia, Seth is intrigued by and drawn to her. Although Mia is attracted to him as well, signs keep pointing to him as a suspect.

While I liked Mia’s character well enough, it got old really fast her constant bickering with Seth about how she could take care of herself. I bet she told him fifty times that she was a trained cop. Who cares! I’m all for women standing up for themselves and being independent; however I also like the idea of a man being protective, of him opening my door or holding my hand. Just basic actions that show he has manners and respects you. Seth is this way. He wants to protect Mia and wants to keep her safe. I realize Mia had no idea she was messing with wolves, but once she learns this fact, her stubbornness is still there.

I enjoyed the story and had a hard time putting it down as I was trying to figure out what was going to happen. There were a couple of twists and surprises that I didn’t expect which added to the story. Wolf ends with a HFN ending and will continue in the next book entitled Alpha. I get the impression that while the majority of the secondary characters will remain (as well as some new ones), the main story will still focus on Seth and Mia.

I hope that Erik will get a book, but I guess that all depends on what happens next.

I love all of Rebecca's stories. I also love tough, strong, domineering alpha heroes. That being said, I enjoyed this story but I had trouble with the sexist topic being one of the main issues (besides the difference in species) between the couple. I can't put my finger on it. Maybe I just didn't feel the love between the main characters, although their chemistry was sizzling hot.

I can't wait to read more in the series and see how it develops though.

Good intensity but mixed results with the investigation the plot is supposed to revolve around. Even though she’s a profiler, all contradictory behavioral evidence gets swept away under “well if we assume any suspect is maybe a psychopath, then we can’t expect it to make sense.” The different twists seem more like a disjointed whodunnit game of hot potato, especially towards the end. But the story taken as a whole somehow ended up working out as being competitive compared to others in the genre.
