I’m all for a bilingual book! Every child and person who is exposed to new languages and cultures have the opportunity to expand themselves and connect to the world. People are able to have better perceptions and experiences as well. Where Is My Little Dog?- Onde está o meu cãozinho?: Bilingual Children's Book in English-Portuguese by Ingo Blum was able to give its readers an introduction to some conversational language. But did it hit the mark? Let’s take a look.
We’re on the search for the little dog, Bobby, but where could he be? We take a journey with the dog owner and try to find their dog while learning some English and Portuguese along the way. The overall story is a sequential search for the dog and was very cute. There is a possibility for an interactive experience. With questions and answers, the kids can practice their speaking, reading, discerning skills, and information processing. Lots of opportunities!
The illustrations were so cute! With the visuals being well designed and made to essentially be a hidden picture game for some pages, younger readers will have just as much engagement as older readers. The colors were perfect and popped out well for the age range this book is for, which would be around 3-5 years old. The actual illustrations are best for slightly older children because the designs are slightly more complicated than a shape based illustration babies and early toddlers’ brains can process.
As amazing as the cute story was, there were a few things that could make it even better. Some pages had a lot of wording, especially since it is doubled with the translations included. So, spreading out the words to multiple pages rather than one side could help balance that out. Also, some of the sentences were a bit longer than the rest and this could overwhelm the readers. Finally, by combining some of the questions, it would alleviate the redundancy that crept in there from time to time.
This would be great for baby to early readers as well as teens/adults who can speak English and Portuguese that will read to the youth. Additionally, children who are learning English and Portuguese along with a pronunciation guide or maybe an audio file to hear the pronunciations.
