How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starswell done but for a few things

Really liked the story. Military fantasy at it’s finest. My problems with the story are general in nature. Too many “grocery lists” of inventory, could have generalized that info. Otherwise, I liked your military experience for authenticity. However, there was no real tension, no real near misses except for the first “reincarnation” event. Everything seemed to work in the main character’s favor. Sort of the “007 lucky break effect”. There needed to be a little more of an emotional feel from the main character over people close to him being lost, some of his personal decisions. In 5+ years he never had a personal life (ex: implied gettin laid)? There is the AI, glad you didn’t call him “Goose” :) But the main character seemed to come to a quick decision on inserting the AI, with no angst over computer viruses or dare I say “cooties”? Or when deciding to kill someone, and it never being the “wrong” someone? Especially for an initially non combat trained person? No shock, no shakes, no second guessing. But that is where fantasy gives us an escape. I just like a little more character growth & expression in a main character. Interesting story, enjoyable read, especially for someone with military experience. Logical thread of events, actions. Did like the upscaling of the operations. Some twists, honor among thieves. Worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot worth the slog
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 18, 2022
This is a very low 3 star book. I won't punish it by giving it less as I think some people might be impressed by the long lists of equipment and the brisk pace of the overall plot. James Haddock is not a bad writer and his prose is relatively easy to read.

** Warning my review will spoil the book, but I feel its necessary to explain my rating **

Where I had issues with this book was the complete lack of character development. This story is about a young man who was out salvaging a battlefield with his father when his father is murdered. He organizes a group to go back and salvage the battlefield, but is betrayed. He sneaks away with some of the equipment and starts a 3rd salvaging group, but they are wiped out while he's recovering from surgery. So he starts a 4th group, but then leaves them for "reasons".

If you can't tell, this tale doesn't take the time to develop any characters. The main character is the only constant and he's largely a passive cypher who the plot swirls around. Yes, there is some great conspiracy that keeps trying to take him out, even though he isn't actively trying to hinder it. Yes, he does gain allies, but they just use him and force him to constantly move on.

For me this was a hard slog of a read. I didn't care for the main character, and I disliked just about everyone he encountered due to them being redshirts rather than fully fleshed out characters who mattered. It also led to a tale that lacked any guidance as to where it wanted to go. The main character seemed to be at a battlefield salvaging, or in a town hiring and preparing for his next journey to a battlefield.

So, I don't really recommend this one, but again, it's not terrible. Just had too much about all the equipment while forgetting a story needs to be about characters interacting with the world around them in interesting ways. Here there weren't really much in the way of characters and their interactions were boring at best.

This old, retired US Army CWO4 really related to this story. Sure, there are a lot of words about equipment but that’s what made the story flow for me, as in BTDT. About the “proof reading”: Double-Unplus Not Good, unless there were some double entendres I missed. Chief Haddock, next book, send the pre-pub proof to me please. Regards from one old Chief to another. CWO4Mann at Comcast dot net.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!

This book was a lot of fun, drawing me in so I just read it nonstop. The military details are top-notch and luck seems to shine on James Cain. It was a fun read that I am glad I bought and even if I was told beforehand that there were a few problems with it, I would still buy it!

Onto the minor problems:
1. Mr Haddock needs to get a proofreader, there are a number of typos in the text. Get a proofreader with a reasonable understanding of English and who enjoys reading. Nothing fancy just pointing out where their was used instead of there, your vs. you're, and similar typos (ones not picked up by the spell checker)... etc...
2. In the beginning there was the word, and sometimes too many words. In the first part of the book there are lots of equipment lists, seems like everytime an item was added to their inventory the inventory list was repeated. I skipped some parts of the story since I didn't want to read the inventory again. In Mr Haddocks defense I must say that this was greatly improved in the later part of the book.

With those two nits picked I would still buy this book and enjoy it, I can't wait for the succeeding volumes to be released!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read....

I enjoyed this book. It is what I call an easy read. The MC is likable and the action is fast. The only critiscism is that the MC is never in trouble. He is so overpowered that he just skates through any issues. Having said that I would definetly read a second book in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different type of space adventure.

Ideally liked this story, a different look at your usual space warfare idea and something rarely mentioned in most war stories, who cleans up after the battle. Specially in space where debris turns into hazards to navigation.

Now to the bad part, you really need to hire a proofreader. Spell checkers just don't work for that, they tell you that the word is spelled correctly, they don't tell you if its the right word. As an example, during one part of the story you talked about the role some units played, half the time it was spelled as roll. Just one example, too many others to count.

This author i have love hate relationships with. Started many years ago wit the Duty series. Loved it keep waiting for book 3. Said coming soon. About 6 months later i go head and try his other books that deal with magic. All good but very similar. MC overpowering but still good read. His new book were becoming very similar to each other. All could need a second book instead of nockoffs of his own work. Then author start releasing different types of books. All good many could have book 2, but still no Duty 3. However each book was getting better. Now we finally have a book that makes me want book 2 of this series instead of duty 3. Note to author your driving me crazy. Last three book start hostile but you win me over. This book looks like improvement. No Super luky or over power MC. ....spoilers ......
every time some good happens you keep pulling the rug. Looking forward to whatever you write next, But Please be a next book to one of you series.

This is a great military sci-fi book if you enjoy this kind of book.I enjoyed the premise very much. I hope this is not just a one off book but the start of a new series. The main character is very well written, need to know more about him and his supporting AI.
The only problem I have are there are too many abbreviations and acronyms without explanation to what they mean, that’s why I did not give this book a five star rating. besides that very good book.

As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Mr. Haddock. The main character, after a personal tragedy, gets his gold mine, but being a small fish, it goes badly. Like the author's previous works, this lets the MC learn and move on to bigger and better resources. Now if the author could just write the sequels to his previous works, then the universe would be a much more enjoyable place. All in all, this is a good read and I recommend it highly.

Pinnace. Not pinnacle. (You Army guys, I swear...heh)

I have read just about all the other books by this author. He needs to finish this storyline! Yes, cut down on the acronyms, which really shouldn't be an issue in the next book, as it looks like the MC and his AI will be going after corporations more. This was a good start, now he needs to keep the momentum going, even if it is by the seat of his pants. I liked it and will re-read it in the future, as I have all the books I've bought of his.

Please finish out the others, like the follow on to Wizard's Alley and Dragon's Envoy. I'd also like more From Mist and Steam and Lord of the High Reaches, but that's just me. I like his books, just not in favor of leaving us hanging with what seems to be an incomplete storyline.
