This is such a beautiful book both in story and illustrations! Some friends learn about a hospital and the children that are staying there. They connect over the differences that make them special. The story shows the beauty of being different and is inspiring for all children! Look past differences and become friends anyways. It has hand written notes that show children how to make someone else feel good too. I love the activities at the end as well. I highly recommend this book!

Slow reading & mixed messages

Whilst a heartwarming story about helping children with illnesses and disabilities, this was very heavy reading for my 6 year old, and slow going for my 9 year old.

Where a character is laughed at for getting their disability wrong came across as bullying to both my children - though the author had perhaps intended it as humor.

A nice idea, but lacking in excitement, and low contrast text on several pages (dark text, dark background).

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a treasure! EVERYONE deserves to be seen as special. Children with "disabilities" or health problems are not exceptions to the rule. Yes, they're different. So am I, so are you, and so is everyone else. The world would be very boring if we were all exactly alike! But Bentley is correct: don't talk ABOUT someone; talk TO them! Our first foster child was a patient at Scottish Rite, and there were so many children with so many conditions. Abby (not her real name) would just walk up and try to talk with them. (She has trouble communicating unless you're around her all the time and know what she is saying.) It never mattered to her what was different about ANY of the children: she just accepted them as a friend to meet. We learned a lot from her!

This story is a great way to teach children about empathy. It also shows that they often are more accepting of others than we are sometimes. We can learn from them if we just pay attention. Abby was always making new friends. Bentley seems to have that same trait. Share the story and share the wonder of those who are differently abled. You will be glad you did!

"The Adventures of Bentley Hippo: Inspiring Children to Never Give Up" is a great book for encouraging empathy in children toward others. Bentley and friends get off a bus and go to a playground. They soon realize that they are next to a hospital. Jaxon the monkey is asking questions about the children in the playground as to why they have certain adaptive equipment. Bentley points out that it is not polite to talk about others, but to instead go and talk to them and get to know them. This is a great part of the book to teach children to not point and stare at others who may need adaptive equipment or who may act differently, but to go and talk to them. They all talk with one another and find out about each other. They realize that by talking to each other, they can understand each other better and they realize that others have challenges too, but they keep going and trying their best. Bentley notices a little girl in the window who is unable to go outside because of treatments she is receiving and the other children tell him that she wants to give up. Bentley and his friends come up with a great plan to help encourage the girl to help her and cheer her up. Bentley delivers cards and other special items to lift the girl up in spirits. This is a great way to encourage readers on things to do to help others in time of need to lift up their spirits. There are pictures of hand drawn letters and cards for the girl and it is an adorable touch to the book.
This book is a great book for children around ages 4-10 to help encourage empathy toward others. It is also a great book to help kids realize that others might also be going through tough times, but they don't give up and keep going and trying.

It also showed children that friendship during tough times be the gift that anyone needs the most. I like how the author utilized children who had disabilities, illnesses, four factors that could not be seen to portray how they are just like anyone else and that friendship can mean the world to them.

I loved reading this story! It brought a tear to my eye because it hit a nerve in acknowledging that those with special needs often struggle with their challenges, whereby they forget to celebrate who they are and their abilities. Bentley, being the best kind of buddy, focusses on their uniqueness as individuals and teaches a great lesson in not limiting oneself and looking for other ways to accomplish ones goals. I love how he motivates and sees the good in others. Such a loving heart!

Ok, this book made me cry. This book is so good. I love how it teaches kids that we all have issues we deal with. Also my daughter battled cancer for 3 years and people had a hard time knowing what to say or do. This book is perfect in showing kids what would be encouraging when others are battling a sickness. Wonderful teaching in this book on relating, being compassionate, and to know how to encourage someone when they're going through a difficult time. Well done!!
