5/250
Never Lie by Freida McFadden
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Whewww! What a ride! This was my personal pick for our monthly book club. I have been wanting to read a book by Freida and here was my chance! I was not disappointed! This book had me on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE time and I could not put it down! The twists, the suspense, everything...chef's kiss.
Without giving anything away, Tricia and Ethan are newlyweds looking to purchase their first home together. They arrive at a home for a viewing in the middle of a snowstorm and end up stranded in this house, which happens to be the home of a woman presumed murdered, but definitely missing. Stranded in this house for several days, Tricia experiences some creepy events and vows to herself that she will agree to live here. THAT'S IT! That's all you get. You must go grab this book and read it for yourself! The only other thing I will say is when you get around page 90 or so ans think you've got the book figured out, YOU DON'T! 🤐😁

This is the 2nd book I read by Freida McFadden. The book kept me intrigued just because I wanted to see if I had it figured out. I wanted to be shocked by the ending but I was able to figure everything out. Disappointed due to its predictable plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars So creepy - I couldn’t put it down

I’m so mad because I have laundry to put away, school assignments to complete, and sleep to catch up on. I could not put this book down until it was finished.

I love how this author develops characters. She doesn’t say « they were best friends since middle school and could anticipate each other’s needs », instead she tells a story about how one knew what the other needed, and relates it back to something they did in their tweens. I mean, I made that example up but you get the point - she illustrates background of the characters not by telling but by using the story, until you feel like you know them. Except, of course, you don’t at all.

Also, she leaves hints and red herrings all through the story. You THINK you know something, but of course it’s not at all what you expect. Or exactly what you expect, but in an unexpected way.

This is the second book by McFadden that I’ve read, and both follow a pattern that isn’t overly tropey or tired but exactly what a psychological thriller should be. In the beginning of the story the reader has no clue where the story is going, but heavily-laid hints lead you to realize something is amis. There’s a secret, and you don’t know what it is or how it matters. You can kinda see where the story is going, but you can’t quite tell what will happen when you get there. You find out the secret - or part of it. It’s so damn suspenseful that you speed-read to get to the climax, which is when you find out that something totally different was going on than you expected. You get let in on the rest of the secret, which comes as a surprise even though there were hints all along that maybe what you thought was happening wasn’t really what was happening - things that in retrospect make perfect sense.

My only complaint -is that this is the second time (of two books) that, at the very end, things seem to just kinda go away on their own that maybe wouldn’t in reality. Some new character fortuitously shows up to « fix » things, or something the character worried about just… never happens. There’s just a touch of « well, that was convenient » and as clever as the rest of the book is, the convenient ending is a bit of a let-down.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Read

To start I’d say this book will be in my top books of 2023.

It may not stay considering how early in the year it is, but it was/is an inthralling read.

From the start I was completely sucked into the book. The way the characters are portrayed / depicted it was hard to tear my eyes away. From page 5 I was already coming up with conspiracies and thought I was dead set on the ending.

I knew what happened.

The more I read, the more convinced I was right. The author did an amazing job at pointing us all in the “right” direction. Until I reached that chaotic turn of events.
Two words.

Plot
Twist

When I say the ending came out of left field I mean it in every context.

I will recommend to others.

My only downside was the ending. Yes it was a complete twist. However, it could’ve held a little more story then just a quick little bow and everything put together. It seemed just a tad rushed and “too accepting” in a sense.
Though, when have crazy people ever thought logically.

So gripping and riveting I could not put it down. I started it on a snow day and almost finished it by 3 am the next day. I could have finished it in one day or less if my iPad hadn’t died and if I was a faster reader. But English is my second language and I’m not a fast reader. I really enjoyed this thrilling mystery. The best part, I realized I was completely wrong through almost three quarters of the book! It is NOT predictable and 1000000000% engaging. LOVED IT.

So I was looking for a book to read on my phone, as my wife was sleeping and I didn’t want to disturb her. (Yes I know an avid reader without a book light, it happens) so a mere 7 hours ago I started this book, and here I am reviewing the finished product. I’ve read Freida before, I think this is my 3rd or 4th now and EVERY SINGLE TIME I am blown away. Absolutely excellent author, excellent book, excellent writing style. These are the books I crave. Start to finish, phenomenal.

I read this in one day. About a third of the way through, I thought I had it figured out - if I had been right I’d have been very disappointed. It would have been too easy. Boy did the author fool me! Even when I thought I had it figured out a couple more times, I was wrong! There were parts along the way that seemed annoying or like I was being spoon fed but by the end, it was all just part of the twists. Definitely worth the read!

I did not expect such a huge plot twistS!!!! It’s like you’re reading and now exactly what’s going on. In fact, you know nothing of what’s going. Just what the author wants you to know and it’s absolutely intriguing. I mean you can never be too sure of your own thoughts right? *wink wink*

I loved this book. I thought I had it all figured out from the beginning. Boy, was I wrong. I highly recommend giving this book a try. It did take me a few chapters to get invested in the story, but once you do, you’re hooked. 5/5 stars from me!

I had never heard of this author, but because of all the good reviews, I decided to download a sample. I was hooked from the beginning & bought the kindle version. This story had great characters, unexpected twists and turns, and was a very fast read. In fact, I read it in one day, which is highly unlike me. Freida McFadden is my new favorite author and I can’t wait to read another of her books.

I bought the book and read the first chapter then life got in the way and I just picked it back up today. Had to re-read a few pages so I could pick up where I left off. Wow!! Read the rest of the book that afternoon! I thought I had it figured out then bam, the twist! Loved it! Just ordered another one of her’s on Kindle to start tonight!
