A fun sci-fi romp that isn't a steamy romace

Estep takes you on a romp through a human galaxy, that sees humans doing what they do best: warfare, greed, subjugation, and the simple denial of a fellow human beings rights.
While it was fun, I would have enjoyed a little bit more of an insight into how corporations essential rule one empire. This empire is run by the 'Regals' who are nobility. They are the ones who run the large corporations for that particular empire. Then you have the merchant empire, which...well, they do what merchants do, they wheel and deal (even if it is their own flesh and blood), and finally you have the Techwares. who are the ones who experiment with body augmentation (even if a person isn't willing).
Into all of this steps our MC, who doesn't know who her father is. Which, seems a wee bit odd to me. If you are in an advanced society, and I would assume an empire where the emperor rules with hell of a lot of paranoia, you would assume that the nobility could easily access the DNA of well..anyone. However, DNA isn't even really mentioned, except when talking about bloodlines.
Another thing that confused me, at one point the MC was on a planet (the capital planet) that she walks out of the house, and there is are horse drawn carriages on the busy street, and that the air is sweet due to no air pollution. Yet, a few scenes later she is in a car. After a while, it got very confusing trying to keep all of the transportation types that the MC might be riding in/on. The airships were easy, because they were well described, but it felt like Estep could figure out how to she wanted the ground of the planets to look like.
All in all though, I REALLY enjoyed the book, to the point where I started to look for the second right away, and was disappointed to find out that this was a new book! The plot is well laid out, and though I wish that the two MCs wouldn't snap at each other quite so much, it was understandable WHY it was happening, and the battle scenes were well written. Hopefully the second book will come out next year! Until then, it will be a long wait, but I will be there waiting for it!
