"The Broad Sweep Of Human History" - by John D. Cofield
A standard history of the human race begins with Paleolithic proto-humans, traces the development of modern man or homo sapiens sapiens, then chronicles the beginnings and expansions of human civilization from agriculture to the present. Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens follows that path, but with several intriguing twists. The result is a fascinating book which will challenge pre-conceptions and occasionally annoy or even anger the reader, but will always intrigue.

Harari focusses on the three great revolutions of human history: Cognitive, Agricultural, and Scientific. He asks how "An Animal of No Significance" managed to become the dominant life form, and whether that animal's learning to produce his own food and then to further harness the natural world to his will through science were boons or setbacks, both for that animal and for the rest of the biosphere. In 20 brilliant chapters Harari asks his readers to consider not ... full review

"A History That Should be Taught in Our Schools" - by RSF
This is the history of the US that should be taught in all schools. This is an elegant read with the truth being told about the US and its history rather than the glossed over versions taught in our schools in the past and today. Howard Zinn is a master in his research and his writing. It is long but worth every minute spent reading it.

"Amazing, Intresting and joy to read" - by Antonio De Carcer Diez (Madrid, SPAIN)
A very deatailed, yet enjoyable to read, book covering the genesys, evolution and variants of one of the most known (but least covered) aeronautical icons.

If you want to find out anecdotes and war stories of one of the most devastating (in terms of firepower deployed) warbirds of WWII. Read this book

"Easy to learn, easy to use" - by Tara L. Beard (Middle Tennessee)
Joy Hakim did a fabulous job with her 10 volume "A History of US" boxed set. We bought the set 3 years ago to use in our homeschool. I was thrilled to find this assessment book to compliment the set. The assessment book is written for secondary levels, however, I think the set and assessment book would be appropriate for grades 5 and up. There are multiple choice tests every 3-4 chapters. The answers are provided in the back of the book. This book contains tests for all 10 volumes in the complete "A History of US". This book makes one of my many jobs as a teacher a bit easier. The questions deal more with understaing the basic ideas of each chapter and less on memorization of dates. If you prefer your student memorize important dates, I would suggest having ... full review

"7-year old loves this book" - by Trish :-) (CA)
Our 7-year old had been asking us "Who's the tallest person in the world?", "What dog is the largest?" etc., so for his birthday we bought him this book and the Guiness book of World Records. Both books were an absolute hit! He started reading them at the party and these two books along with a "Laugh out Loud" jokes book will keep him busy until school starts.

"Beautiful hardcover addition to my Harry Potter library. Get it!" - by T. Ferrin (Chicago, IL)
This is an absolutely awesome book. Make sure to buy this one...it's the hardcover British version. I saw the paperback version this weekend in a store and it is no where near as great as this version.

The stories are so intriguing. I love how it threads reality, rumor, mythology etc. to show how J.K. Rowling was impacted in her story telling.

Buy this book. You will not regret it. Will be buying as gifts for other Harry Potter fans.

"Wonderful reading for everyone. My daughter's favorite author." - by Amazon Customer
My daughter loves Rick Riordan's novels. She's systematically been reading all of his books since the 4th grade (over & over). I've been reading them after she's finished them....Love them! They satisfy the mythical wonderlust in all of us I guess.

"Wow!! The mini dino pop-ups are just as cool as the large ones!!!" - by Jonhayashi1 (New York, Long Island)
After enjoying all 3 of the Encyclopedia Mythologica Pop-up book series I ordered the first volume of Encyclopedia Prehistorica DINOSAURS by Sabuda and Reinhardt! This talented duo made the prehistoric encyclopedias before the myth encyclopedia books. I quickly read the book while examining the amazing pop-ups! The dino pop-ups brought back memories of my early fasination with dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural History in New York City! It reminded me of both the early names of the dinosaurs while also giving me up to date information on recent dinosaur fossil discoveries! Both the old familar dinos as well as the newly discovered ones are rendored in a stylised way while having the animals shapes and anatomy fully depicted! One of the unique aspects of Sabuda's and Reinhart's work is that their pop-ups are coloured and detailed on BOTH SIDES! Most pop-ups in other books are white on the ... full review

"Wonderful, and yet again, wonderful!" - by Muffy
Delightful, just delightful. The Kindle-in-Motion illustrations are all you could hope for, starting with the delicious cover. The portraits, both still and moving ones, are extraordinarily beautiful. I was so impressed and delighted. I showed the book to my mother on her I-Pad and she literally clapped her hands and said, "I have seen so many things in my nine decades, but to think I would live see books that move! What a wonder!" Enjoy the story again.

"Granddaughter enjoyed this." - by medolark2004 (Bismarck, ND)
I bought this for my granddaughter. She loves the interactive books and enjoyed this one as she has the others I have bought her. The rating is four star simply because the subject was not as interesting to her as others, which is nothing against the book itself.

"A long-overdue, essential anthology for American literature" - by rif (North Smithfield, RI, United States)
I love this book. The introduction expertly articulates the editors' concerns, looking at issues of the working class through the lens of solidarity, struggle, and issues of the body, amongst other things. Editors Coles and Zandy also address the importance and the difficulty of understanding how the terms "working-class" and "literature" are defined. Their selections span a wide swath of American history, which they divide into chronological sections, providing context for important historical moments (the Gilded Age, post-slavery, the Industrial Revolution, the Cold War, the New World Order, etc.)

Some important events in labor history included are the Triangle Shirtwaist Strike, the Battle of Homestead, the building of the Trans-continental Railroad, the Driving Outs, Angel Island, the Depression (of course),the Lowell Mill Girls, the Harlan County Miners. Some notable authors included are Dorothy Allison, Stephen Crane, Upton Sinclair, Herman Melville, Rebecca Harding Davis, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Carlos ... full review

"Easy To Follow" - by Kelly B.
Really easy to follow fun book. I got it for my Dad who loves history. He's 77 and wouldn't sit down to a complicated book that is work to read at this stage. He loved it and wouldn't put it down. It would also be good for kids.

"warts and all" - by Dr. John W. Rippon (Florida)
I've been something of a histroy buff all of my life. This has been mostly ancient Greek and Roman history and history of Britain. I decided a change of pace would be nice and to learn more of the development of the neighboring country of France. I'd been a great fan of the style of Simon Shama and his approach of emphasizing socio-economic developments along with the usual kings, queens and wars genre of histories of my 50's college days. Looking over the offerings of Amazon.com, I took a chance on Colin Jones "France" in the Cambridge Illustrated History series and am certainly glad I did. (I also like to look at pictures). This book is truly a story of the development of the peoples and the rough and tumble way they came to be a single nation by a series of chances and luck. All of this is presented ... full review
