"Non-fiction at its finest!" - by Mickey Parker (Las Vegas, Nevada, USA)
I was a poor student in school, and history was my worst subject. This book as me lapping up what you couldn't have shoved down my throat as a youngster. Sure, I've matured some toward learning (now in my 60s), and the Kindle is way more comfotable and convenient than the heavy, awkward textbooks we had then, but these authors and organizers deserve some big-time credit for this work way beyond that. This is writing that doesn't just impart information; it gives you the sense of almost being there. Five stars allthe way!

"Beautiful book, useful resource, fun for the whole family" - by Thomas E. Davis (Seattle, WA)
DK does for history what it has previously done for the universe, the earth, animals, and humans in gorgeously-illustrated large-format "visual guides" entitled, logically enough, "Universe," "Earth," "Animal," and "Human." Each book in the series is as comprehensive as possible, though of course none of them can be as endlessly expansive as the enormous subjects they tackle. But they do a wonderful job of categorizing knowledge and related fields, including copious detail, and inspiring curiosity and wonder.

"History" will not replace standard textbooks on specific historical eras or regions of the world, but it serves as an excellent general introduction, particularly for those who might otherwise be turned off by the subject of history. It starts with the origin of our species, its spread throughout the globe, and prehistoric developments that ensured our survival. Early and classical civilzations are covered next, followed by the Dark and Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Reformation, ... full review
"A History That Should be Taught in Our Schools" - by RSF
This is the history of the US that should be taught in all schools. This is an elegant read with the truth being told about the US and its history rather than the glossed over versions taught in our schools in the past and today. Howard Zinn is a master in his research and his writing. It is long but worth every minute spent reading it.

"A fine book" - by Fred D. Shockley (San Antonio, TX United States)
Everyone who appreciates real books should read The Book. After learning all that has gone on over the millennia that has resulted in today's books, one can't help but love a finely made book even more. Keith did a great job in weaving a tapestry out of many different threads to present a rich picture of books. The stories of origins of papyrus, parchment, and paper, along with the history of writing and printing, make it complete.

"Beautiful hardcover addition to my Harry Potter library. Get it!" - by T. Ferrin (Chicago, IL)
This is an absolutely awesome book. Make sure to buy this one...it's the hardcover British version. I saw the paperback version this weekend in a store and it is no where near as great as this version.

The stories are so intriguing. I love how it threads reality, rumor, mythology etc. to show how J.K. Rowling was impacted in her story telling.

Buy this book. You will not regret it. Will be buying as gifts for other Harry Potter fans.

"The Intersubjective Realm" - by P. Schuyler (The Woodlands, TX)
I don't do book reviews too often. But this was definitely one of the most important books I've ever read. For me it was a massive shift in perspective that cleared up a lot of confusion I had about history and our strange modern life. The thesis is simple and profound; Q: What makes Homo Sapiens so different from the rest of the animal kingdom, and why are we so dominant? A: Our ability to create and share our Fictions; "the Inter-Subjective Realm." I had studied many different philosophies over the years but I had never heard of this phrase, the "Inter-subjective Realm." And now, it is staring me in the face as obvious. I've heard similar references about 'artificial worlds' or 'hyper-realities', but usually these things are characterized as a distraction or a kind of human malfunction (i.e. kids addiction ... full review

"A guide to the intricate aspects of matter, time and the universe" - by Brad Revell
If you want to know how the world and the universe works then this book is certainly the one to read. From Quantum Mechanics, providing key sight into extremely small particles and matter that makes up the universe, to relativity (general and special) which describes how space and time works is what this book is all about. What I liked most was Hawking's writing style where he inserts both humour where required (he opens with the Turtle challenge by a member of the audience) as well as plain and easy language to explain concepts about complex topics. Whilst the detail went a little over my head it was nice to go through and pick out areas that made sense. Then again I was able to read a GetAbstract summary on this book and get more out of it. It really depends on what you want to learn and how much.

"Easy To Follow" - by Kelly B.
Really easy to follow fun book. I got it for my Dad who loves history. He's 77 and wouldn't sit down to a complicated book that is work to read at this stage. He loved it and wouldn't put it down. It would also be good for kids.

"A great book for visual reference." - by Kaikaikiki
I'm a painter and designer, this is really a great book, a visual delight for anyone who is curious about nature. I saw many things in that book that i never could think it exists, amazing species of birds just to mention one part of the book. If you have no inspiration on drawing anything, this book will always give you something to think about.
The only part that i found disturbing is the chapter about insects, pictures of bugs in full page are quite spooky and some of them are not really good looking...so i just put 2 pieces of paper between this chapter to not bump into it. I like insects, beetles, spiders and many others but some of them are really repulsing for the eyes.
A great coffee table book that will give you plenty of inspiration.

"The seminal story of Hip-Hop birthed through photos" - by M. Reid
I loved everything about this book. I was fortunate enough to attend the panel discussion at The Bowery Electric on Mobile Mondays. This book reminded me why I love Hip-Hop. It also reminded me why it's in my DNA. The intro written by Vikki Tobak was beautiful prose. It captured the genesis of Hip-Hop and the need to preserve and visually represent the culture in the future. Thank you for your effort. It's greatly appreciated.

"Awesome book." - by D D (GREENWOOD VILLAGE, CO, US)
As is to be expected from a DK Smithsonian series book, this book is absolutely awesome. The print detail and images are perfect. The content is detailed enough to get the information but not too wordy as some reference material can be. Highly recommended.
