"Well written, the book covers: The basic concepts ..." - by Ab
Well written, the book covers:
The basic concepts of software quality, the major areas of software management, software life cycle, waterfall and Agile, and life cycle processes. Very clear and detail about testing, test plans, and a step-by-step test design process along with a sample test case which is very practical and important. It also examines what a tester or test lead needs to do before and during test execution and how to report after completing the test execution.
The third section deals with security breaches and defects that may occur. It discusses documentation and classification of incidences as well as how to handle an occurrence. The last section provides examples of security issues along with a security policy document and addresses the planning aspects of an information audit. This section also discusses the definition, measurement, and metrics of reliability based on standards and quality metrics methodology CMM models. It discusses the ... full review

"Best introductory software testing book on the market today" - by Timothy Walker
I have been in the software product development field for 15 years and this is the best introductory book on software testing that I've read. It approaches software testing as it is done today where many of the other books in this realm continue to treat software testing as if it was still 1985. Developers actually test nowadays, products need to be released almost daily with new features, and consumer tolerance for defects is at an all time low. This requires advanced software testing strategies. The topics here are great ones for new developers and testers; unit testing, performance testing, test driven development, combinatorial testing, etc.. I thought the code examples that were included to drive points home were excellent. All QA and test engineers will have to write code if they are working in most intermediate and advanced software product companies today. I highly recommend this book for all ... full review

"This book does a good job of sharing more of his knowledge on the ..." - by Rex Black (Bulverde, TX, USA)
I worked with Tilo Linz in my capacity as the Chair of the ISTQB Foundation Extension Agile Tester Working Group. He clearly knows a lot about this topic, some of which he shared in the portion of the Agile Foundation Extension syllabus that he co-wrote.

This book does a good job of sharing more of his knowledge on the topic. I particularly like the use of a running case study, the eHome project, to illustrate concepts. The thorough coverage of unit and integration testing is excellent, particularly the detailed discussion of integration testing, a test level which is often under-utilized. Concise but complete code samples with ample explanation make these concepts very clear, unlike the enigmatic and free-floating code samples found in some books.

This book would be a good complement to Cripsin and Gregory's book on agile testing. It fills a lot of the gaps that exist ... full review

"Great for novices in Quality Assurance" - by Yarmilet
This book is simply great in terms of language, examples, clarity of thoughts, objectives. Its a must have for all Testing professionals. Got this book from my sister, and I think it will help us grow in the QA. What i loved about the book was its simplicity and every detail of the book, it also contain several structures to understand in the proper way all the concepts and fundaments of the QA. I really like the way that this book is written, in my opinion is the best book for novices in Quality Assurance, the book explain everything in a pretty easy way, the book is not that extense making all the content very useful and with a lot potential. A thing that pleases me is the language used to write the guide, it is a scientific language but always ensuring that the concepts are very simple to be ... full review

"A Must-Read for Software Quality Assurance Professionals" - by Pat OToole
"Mastering Software Quality Assurance" is a thorough portrait of the quality assurance landscape. As indicated in its subtitle, the book provides robust insight into software quality assurance "best practices, tools, and techniques." Despite its breadth of coverage, it is an easy read that provides "just enough" coverage of a particular topic before moving on to the next.

Author Murali Chemuturi provides an extensive number of lists throughout the book - everything from aspects of specification quality (6 items), to triggering events for phase end audits (6 items), to the aspects ensured in acceptance test readiness inspections (11 items), and so on. He also provides a number of templates (e.g., Test Plan template, Test Case template, Audit Report template, etc.) that offer an outstanding starting point for organizations or practitioners new to the field.

Chapter 6, Validation, was particularly rich in its discussion of "Testing Different Types of Software Products" ... full review

"Great information source for Software Quality Assurance" - by Uma Bharat (Pune, India)
As someone who has worked in both software development and quality, I instantly connected with the quality practices and scenarios that the author describes about the role of quality in most software development organizations. It states the challenges faced by SQA teams in implementing quality practices, especially in terms of people issues and the approach that may be taken to overcome them. This book provides insight into the SQA function and role, its importance and the commitment required to make it effective. I liked this part, as there are few books that stress on the crucial role played by the SQA in a company committed to quality.

I found the section on measurement and metrics with metrics and formulae that can be used through the SDLC. There are other books that provide in depth treatment on metrics, but the content here is useful because of its timing and context and it ... full review

"Good book if you read all of it" - by nicolasB
I’m glad this book was written: I now have some material to point people to when they ask me what to look for when making decisions. I like that it tries to cover many of the competing forces that contribute to a design. I think where this book falls a bit short is at articulating well the trade offs one would make: there is some of that but it’s lost in various paragraphs and because of that it’s hard to use this as a reference book that can be looked at later. In other words I can’t tell somebody to go look at a particular aspect of design or risk ending up with a system that has bad properties overall (people tend to interpolate and make things into hard rules).

"A true classic and the best SQA book for serious SQA pros" - by Mike Tarrani (Deltona, FL USA)
This book is one of the most comprehensive treatments of SQA on the market. It is a collection of essays that cover every imaginable aspect of SQA with an overall focus to prepare candidates for the American Society of Quality's software quality engineer certification (CSQE). Each author is an acknowledged expert in the field, and each essay is well developed and gets to the essence of the topic.
Although the primary intent of this book is to prepare readers for the CSQE exam, this book contains the building blocks to develop a world-class software engineering process group and/or to move up the capability maturity model (CMM)ladder or achieve a higher level of capability within the context of SPICE (Software Process Improvement Capability dEtermination). In particular CMM and SPICE are 'assessed' levels of capability maturity with no prescribed techniques. This book provides a collection of techniques that will fit ... full review

"with perfect quality, exactly to the requirements suffers the illusion ..." - by Will Ballard
The real lesson in here is the reason behind software quality, and an effective economic definition of software quality ** DONT BREAK IT ** which is profoundly different than the conventional, and uneconomical theory of meeting the requirements. Why? Well -- when has anyone ever known the requirements for product market fit in advance? Perfectly implementing, with perfect quality, exactly to the requirements suffers the illusion that the requirements are correct.

I remember 10 years ago when I met David during a diligence, all proud of my unit tests. Complete -- no fooling -- complete coverage, I was so into it, I even built custom tools into Visual Studio to run NUnit tests and real time show coverage. State of the art 2007. I remember showing the code, all proud papa... David simply asked me "You clearly tripled the amount of software written with all this testing, did you triple ... full review

"Wonderful introduction to software testing" - by Jim Grey (Indianapolis, IN USA)
Ron Patton has written a wonderful introduction to software testing. It explains just the right amount of theory and concept before helping the reader build a solid understanding of the testing craft and providing the reader a good starter testing toolbox.
Because of the nature of my company?s work, I often find it appropriate to hire people with strong domain knowledge (plus evidence of traits and skills transferable to testing) to be testers. I lend my copy of this book to each new tester and make their first assignment be to read it. When they finish, they have a decent enough understanding of the work that I can make assignments right away.

"Excellent Overview in SDLC" - by D. Salotti (New Jersey, USA)
I found this brief and inexpensive read to be an excellent resource for those needing a high level overview of SDLC -- as head of Operations for a technology firm that does a decent amount of software development, I found this to be really valuable in quickly coming up to speed on the process and quality aspects of the various components of a software validation package.

"A comprehensive book, up-to-date" - by Congwei Dang (Tokyo)
I borrowed this book from library and have read a lot of it. I am a system/SW engineer with more than 10 year experience in every phases of SW engineering. Although now I am focusing on the areas of SW PM, I found I needed know more about to how to improve the quality of SW with lower cost. I read several recommended books and found this one perhaps is the best one which fit the condition of mine.

This book is very sysmatic, not only in the way of organizing the contents, but in the perspective of writing the book, so that you can get a lot of valuable information no matter you are a programmer, tester, PM, or QA. By reading the book, you can feel the solid theory backgrounds of the authors, which add readable features not difficulties. The best practices are also illustrated, and some of them ... full review
