After reading Esperanza Rising in Spanish, I became skeptical about Spanish language translations, especially from authors of Mexican descent. In the case of Sandra Cisneros, her books have been beautifully translated in Spanish by Mexican authors such as Elena Poniatowska. But in the case of Esperanza Rising, the Spanish language translation is in CASTILLIAN SPANISH! This needs TO STOP! In order to truly understand Mexican culture, English language books by Mexican authors need to be translated to Mexican Spanish and be culturally aware of regionalisms and more. This book is a GREAT translation. As a Mexican American who was born in Torreón Coahuila Mexico, but who grew up in Chicago, and now a college lecturer and Spanish teacher, I can attest that this is a great translation. THANK YOU Erika for respecting your book and your fans. Amazing book. Since La casa en Mango Street, I have not read something this good! You are amazing.

I read this book with an adult Spanish conversation group. We chose it because the subject matter was appealing and the language was relatively easy to understand. We ended up getting much more than we expected. The story is captivating. It is extremely well written. And there are universal themes in this coming-of-age novel about the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Especially in 2020 as society grapples with issues of understanding between people with different backgrounds, the struggle of US-born Julia and her Mexican-born parents is highly pertinent. I would recommend this book highly for both young adults and adults, either in English (I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter) or in Spanish.
